VW Skoda Seat Red Screen fix Emergency Download MIB2 Technisat

- While attempting to upgrade the firmware from 02xx to 04xx I managed to lock my #MIB2 Technisat unit due to bad metainfo2.txt file provided with the custom update. I was hoping to convert the unit to the facelift software version and I got stuck with red screen and #Emergency Download, the only way to turn off the radio was by removing the QuadLock connector from the main unit.
ℹ️ I've created a custom update to restore stock swdownload app instead of the patched one. Red screen was gone, VW logo appeared but the unit was now in boot loop and every 30 seconds it rebooted.
I've prepared an SD card with previous firmware, inserted it in SD1 port, connected USB-to-UART converter to the QuadLock, opened the unit and shorted two point with tweezers while powering the device. This way I was able to see #recovery menu on my PC, and by selecting "2" I choose emergency download mode.
Powered of the device, waited 10 seconds, powered it back on, the unit started in Emergency Download mode, and immediately detected the SD card with firmware files. After 30 minutes or so system was restored to stock. Component protection was not triggered, factory installed FEC/SWaP codes were present and valid.
🔌 PuTTy Serial COM with 115200bps; 3.3V level; Rx to Tx, Tx to Rx, Gnd to Gnd.
💻 Firmware used to restore: MST2_EU_VW_ZR_P0254T
🚗 MIB2 Technisat/Preh units can be found in VAG cars like Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda.
🚙 MIB2 Delphi and Harman units can be found in VAG cars like Audi, Sear, Skoda, Volkswagen, Porsche, Lamborghini. Procedure might be different for those units.

hi, found you whilst looking into a similar issue "emergency download, no suitable update found. insert valid update" but i don't get a boot loop like you had, eg no VW logo, only the error and then goes blank for a second and does the same again. from here would i be able to just insert an SD card with a valid firmware and it update on its own do you think?
Also is there a way to see what was the last version of the firmware installed from here as i have no access to any menu options.

Thanks for the video! Just finished in your situation and I was wondering if I can do this entire procedure with the unit detached from the car. I mean, I saw you basically touched nothing so maybe it just need the power supply and the UART connection. If so, I can unbrick it from my workbench. What do you think?

I have a question. I am trying to do an emergency update but the log in putty is messy with unreadable characters. Is it because of gnd? I just used a cable from the usb to uart converter and the other end that was a father I clipped on it the crocodile and the other crocodile on the case. Is this correct?
Hi @mr-fix, on the UART cable setup, what are those metal connectors you're using? The ones you inserted into the quadlock, I tried to find one exactly like your which will fit in the quadlock but couldn't.
one can use "Universal ISO Radio Connector Harness "and remove the wire with the metal end from the connector. You need to use an extractor or you can make it form a paper clip (two parallel pins) that you will pus the cable out. use the extractor again to remove the pins from the quadlock
How did you create a custom update for the emergency screen?
Hello, today my MIB delphi unit failed to update firmware and now i get black screen without any signal, cant enter 5F module in vcds but i can hear the headunit running fan, can you help me please?

My Golk MK7 screen also died when updating and does not go past the W/BlueMotion logo at startup. I have watched your video and I will see if I am able to revive it but I have a question, at what moment do I make the short circuit with the tweezers?

I was wondering, is the PuTTy terminal necessary for a reboot? Is it possible to just short the points and system will automatically update from SD card? Or will you definitely need to get boot menu and press 2.

You need it. main board short will get you into the recovery menu. When in it, you need to select option no. 2 - PuTTY or other serial monitor is required to do it.
Hey dude, great video! Hoping you can help as I'm in a similar situation. I have a Harman brand MIB2 High series unit. I have a couple of questions.
Which pins do I need to connect RX and TX cables to? I found a document online which shows a description of all of the various pins, however it seems there's two sets of RX/TX pins - one in a group labelled MMX, one in the RCC group
My Harman unit seems to have a significantly different mainboard to your Technisat unit and the contact points you shorted in your video are not there in my device. Do you know how I can boot my Harman unit into the emergency menu to reload firmware?

#Mrfix I have the same problem. I tried to change skins files but something goes wrong. I have an unit with the SD cards integrantes, have you the positions of the two points to make the short in this unit? I want to use my Arduino Mega as TTL adaptator. Are empties the positions of the Tx and Rx on the quadlock?
Me respondo yo mismo. Los terminales de Rx y Tx del enchufe Quadlock están vacíos por lo que solo hay que meter los nuevos. Finalmente compre un USB UART porque no me quedaba claro el uso del Arduino. Primero hay que arrancar la radio con las pinzas puestas en los terminales, y cuándo salga el menú y elijamos la opción 2 hay que quitarlas, volver a apagar y encender, y comienza el proceso de emergencia. No hace falta desenchufar el Quadlock en ningún momento, solo cuando vayas a retirar los cables que hemos puesto.
Is the tx and rx at the quadlock free ?
Or it must be removed that rx/tx from usb has place ?
Those pins are free.
mr-fix i did all the steps but my mib2 remains in the emergency download with error cpu Module: nuanceres.frf%2 at step 45/100. even if press 2 the mib 2 goes into energy download but i get an error at step 45. i tried mst2_eu_vw_zr_p0254t and mst2_eu_vw_zr_p0248t. I don't have my original mst2_eu_vw_zr_p0241t on sd card. could you give me advice, thank you.

I managed to brick my mib2 technisat while trying to update firmware. I get the same red screen but no boot loop. I don’t know how to bring it back to life and VW won’t touch it 😢

Have MIB STD2 PQ+ /NAV (5K7035200D) Does Not have Glovebox unit - Just Head unit. Can connect via TTL Serial and can see boot loop data using TeraTerm set 115,200,N,8,1. So all that is good .. is there an option on this model to initiate emergency update procedure.
Should be possible the almost the same way as in the video. The only difference will be the main board with those two points that you need to bridge. They will be located in different place.

I'm trying to set up this RS232 serial connection, but when I power up the MIB2 unit I'm just getting nonsense on the screen.
I've tried all baud rates from 1200 to 115200 and none make any difference.
Can you tell me what your settings were for Data Bit, Stop Bit, Parity and Flow Control on this connection?
You sure you connected with the right pair of Tx/Rx lines? Because there are two.

Hi, I have similar problem with MIB2 infotainment unit which has run into boot loop. But in my case it happened during normal usage. No firmware updates, manual modifications etc. Just stock firmware. Can you describe how you have prepared sd card for your emergency recovery ? What was there ? As I said it happened unexpectedly so i haven't prepared any backups etc.

Hi, I have the same reboot problem as you after installing a patch. The technician told me the memory is burned. Is it possible or is it repairable to the volkswagen?
VW will most likely just replace the unit with new one, and it's not going to be cheap.

You can get any USB to UART device with 3.3V capabilities. I got mine from Amazon, works great. You may need to install drivers though

why after pressing 2 in the emergency menu and disconnecting the power it does not start in the download emergency? we have the same unit
Maybe you are pressing 2 too late. Or there's something wrong with your Tx-Rx connection.
I short out the unit, the emergency menu appears, I press 2, I disconnect the power, wait a few seconds, I put the power back on, but nothing appears

Not yet. Decided to postpone it for couple weeks and focus on other videos.
Now a clip on how you'll patch it and getting it back as before the red screen

I don't know what "you radio" is. There are different vendors and versions of MST2 devices.

That's why I don't wan't Update my System. I was hoping, the System don't allow a incorrect Firmware.
It doesn't by default. I've forced the firmware by patching SWDL app first.

Try inserting SD card with firmware. New card, freshly format with FAT32, fresh FW download.
