I'm new to this; have a small lathe but haven't turned anything in anger yet......... This demo is perfect for people like me who don't know their arse from their elbow 😂😂 tool presentation, pressure used and where to place that pressure, even things like where you stand; I've learned more from this than any other video I've watched. The average age of a woodturner here in Ireland is 65, I'm in my mid 30s........ You're teaching a brand new breed of turner's with videos like this, and brining it to a wider audience, many thanks for takin the time to do this 😁🤙 PS, the same concept of video applied to spindle work would be awesome.
This has been THE MOST helpful bowl turning teaching lesson I have ever witnessed in all that I have seen. I am 79 years young, Ha, and just getting into wood turning. So, thank you so very much for this video Colwin. Glen in Lufkin Texas.
Just bought a lathe did some turning in 1970 and 1971 very informative I didn't realize trees could pickup silica I am a retired GM service tech we had same issue with brake rotors having silica in metal that would cause hot spots and pulsations thanks for the info
Colwin, as a novice I found this tutorial superb; your teaching skills are only surpassed by your turning skills. Your explanation of flute direction was exemplary particularly for somebody who has always found difficulty in understanding 2, 10 etc and often confused by less skilled tutors who talk about 1o’clock and 3 minutes past 5 etc - you get my drift. No doubt that I will watch this tutorial again in order to consolidate my learning. Incidentally, your breaks for sharpening made me realise that I do not sharpen enough. My thanks.
What a fantastic video session ! Well done Colwin and Steph. A perfect introduction for newer turners. I wish I’d had access to such a introduction when I started turning a few years ago. Excellently done
One of the best videos on TH-cam on bowl turning, Shows a lot of views of how to hold the bowl gouge and manipulation of the tool will be watching more than once. Thank you!
What an enormously appealing bowl that is, too! The choice to finish that as a simple, straightforward, thick-edged bowl, was absolutely perfect to display the raging glory of that spalted wood. Given all the turning skill in the world, I still would have done it that way. What a hell of a great prize for a first turning!
Such a good tutorial. I've been turning for 8 months and can see I've picked up some bad habits that result in catches and tear out that then take ages to sand out. I think I need some tuition! Well done Steph and well taught Colwin.
What a brilliant video! it's terrific to see Colwin tutoring Steph as his learner. I certainly like this style of learning as his explanations of correct methods and guidance on tool position etc. certainly make the art of turning more understandable for me
Congratulations Steph. Fantastic video and bowl. Be great to follow you on your turning journey. Hope Colwin has you turning on woodworking Wisdom on a regular basis. Well done girl.
A brilliant instructional video - well done Colwyn and Steph. I view many videos - this has to be THE best. I shall be watching it a few times & recommend it to others.
Have just bought a wood turn myself. Got very interested for some reason and took a leap of faith in wanting to possibly make something great out of it. Still waiting for it to arrive, extremely excited! Can not wait! This is a Very professional video for anyone wanting to learn. Watched the whole time and will continue to watch and learn. Keep up these videos! I plan to record my progress from day one. Appreciate your hard work! Your n amazing teacher!
That was absolutely great, really useful for someone who has been unable to do any woodturning for a couple of years and needs to get back into it. Colwin and Steph make a great pair and I am looking forward to the next one. Many thanks!
I am so very happy you posted this tutorial, as a beginner in woodturning, I have areas that cause me to not achieve a better turning !. After watching you exceptionally detailed demonstration. I went into my shop and practiced your defined instructions. I corrected a couple tool handling issues. Giving me much better results. Thank you so much. I look forward to your future videos.
This was probably one of the best beginners bowl turning video I have seen. I am going to share this with our woodturning club instructors. We have been asked to conduct a beginners bowl turning class for the local Makers Space. I think we should consider this video as Best In Class training. Steph is a "natural". Work on that thumb strength... LOL.
Absolutely top job Steph. While Colwin is an excellent instructor, the teacher is only as good as his\her student. Was an enjoyment to watch. Colwin's instructions were fantastic. really enjoyed watching.
Well done Steph, that was excellent for your first bowl, you've got a good teacher there, I'm a novice as well so I'm learning by watching as many turning videos as possible, at the moment I'm going back to basics quite a lot to reinforce in my brain. I'm of again tomorrow to practice these techniques. Eddy xx
I really enjoyed this video, I felt the commentary so much more meaningful as some was learning at the same time, well done Steph a stunning first bowl
Absolutely loved this video. Can't wait for the next one of these you do. As always colwin you explain everything so well for us new turners. Just brilliant guys. Here's to the next one.
I really enjoyed watching this, what a lovely intro and lovely product at the then. great video, I purely watched this out of interest to see how it was done.
Tell Steph to look up Kim Tippin and I am sure she knows of The Tiny Turner. She is a wonderful wood turner and does amazing work. Way to go Steph and Colwin beautiful piece of wood. Amazing teacher Colwin I learned a lot also watching, Ben the Pen will now need to get another lathe, Thank you for the demo.
Well done Steph, a great first bowl and what a lovely piece of wood. As always Colwin makes learning so easy, a fantastic teacher. Happy New Year to you all.
One of the best “learning” vids I’ve seen! Also, I was impressed with how observant your student was. Looking forward to spindle work. Liked and Subscribed! Thanks!!!
Really excellent video and a lovely bowl at the end of it. Well done Collin and Steph. I have been a beginner for the last 24 years and I am inspired to have a go at a bowl like that if only I could find a piece of timber like that for 9 quid😀
Howdy. You're the man to ask; I'm most likely going to purchase a miDi lathe in the next weeks cos I live working with wood. Never turned wood but did a bit of metal years ago in school: my question is; if I turn lots of pieces over the next year's...what to do with them? Firewood? Unlikely to sell as may not be good enough
Hi Colwin, I am going to buy my first laith shortly, I fancy trying my hand at wood turning, there are various laithe to buy , some with faster speeds, what sort of laith would be a good buy, and does a faster speed make a difference. Any advice would be good. Cheers, john
I've watched many of Colwin and Jason videos but only just come across this one which, as a relative newcomer, I found by far the best so far on bowls. Particularly the advice about the relative direction of the flute. What's the next in the series?
Hi Phil, we hope to bring you more videos like this in the future and if you have any suggestions, please let us know. And don't forget to subscribe to stay notified on upcoming videos. Thanks for watching!
Great video for us beginners or anyone turning as always.Tool control and technique were wonderful. What type of oil were you using to coat and raise the end grain? Thanks again.
if you do not have a DVR controlled lathe. You cannot start the lathe at zero speed. but you can put the belt at the lowest speed possible. Then move the belt up to change the speed faster. My lathe starts at 250 rpm.
THANKS FOR THE BEGINNERS VIDEO, IT HELPED A LOT, BOUGHT OLD WAKIN LATHE, I WOULD LKIE TO KNOW WHERE YOU BOUGHT THE SPEED CONTROLLER , WOULD NEED TO BE FOR 3 PHASE, THANKS
Thank you and glad to hear you have been inspired! This lathe is the Axminster Professional AP406WL 230v and is from our Professional range and one of our larger lathes. For beginner's we'd perhaps recommend looking at our Axminster Workshop range - www.axminstertools.com/machinery/lathes/woodturning-lathes We have a new video coming soon which looks at lathes and choosing the right lathe for your project, which you may find useful. Subscribe to be notified, th-cam.com/users/livenVRzCelKsS8
This is a great video explaining every thing and the back and forth between you is great way to help everyone. One question though, was Ben not brave enough to teach Steph himself?
Hi there, unfortunately we longer offer courses at Axminster Tools. However, please check out what's going on at your nearest Axminster Tools store as we have in store demos, talks and plenty of advice from our in house experts www.axminstertools.com/stores and of course, our TH-cam channel is packed with useful videos, whether you're looking to improve your skills or try something new.
Hi there, in this video Steph and Colwin are using the Axminster Professional AP406WL - this is available as either bench top or floor standing. Our full lathe range can be found here www.axminstertools.com/activities/woodturning/woodturning-lathes thanks for getting in touch!
I am surprised nobody pointed out Steph should not be wearing a ring when turning, especially when her left hand is on the toolrest next to the workpiece
Hi there, thank for your comment highlighting your concern. Colwin says: "Spalted shouldn't make any difference to the thought process, ALL wood dust is hazardous to our health. This video was made to show the tuition of a beginner and we had the dust extraction running at times when needed. The wood was partially green so no dust in the air when turning. In our own workshops we would be wearing eye, ear and lung protection through the whole process."
I like Colwin's videos but seriously? She's never done any turning (hmmm...) and starts straight out with a 12" bowl from a rough cut piece of timber? Really great advice for all the newbies and their midi lathes 🙄
Excellent Mentoring. Good to see Steph,as she's usually firing you with questions.Much appreciated😎

Hi Whitty's Workshop, thanks for watching! Glad to hear you have found this video useful.
This is possibly the most useful woodturning video I have ever watched. Thanks!!!

Great. I just bought my first lathe, never turned a thing. Only thing I wished they showed more was turning the wood around and fixing to the chucs
Thanks for watching and thank you for the feedback, we will take this on board for any future videos :)
One of the best videos on TH-cam on bowl turning, Shows a lot of views of how to hold the bowl gouge and manipulation of the tool will be watching more than once. Thank you!
Lots of fun watching someone turn their first bowl, well done.
Steph is a natural - well done - lovely tuition from Colwin too, pleasure to watch!

Well done, Steph! Great pupil, with a great teacher. I've learnt more watching this than any other so called "teaching" videos.
Well done Steph, a perfect student.

Steph, im brand new and you were perfect in that place as the learner. I'm excited to use what I learned here
Imagine getting one-on-one tutelage by Colwin! Fantastic video folks and an amazing first bowl Steph!🙌
Really good watching you teaching a beginner. Well done Steph.
Congrats Steph!
Excellent teaching and I learnt a great deal having largely self taught previously. Back on my lathe with more confidence. Thanks.
Great to hear! Glad you have found this video useful. Good luck with your turning
GREAT tutorial! Next best thing to hands on teaching. Much better than "Watch me turn a wood bowl". Great job both of you!
You should be very proud of that piece of work. Thanks for the tips guys.
Thank you for thinking of adding this perspective to your videos. This answers so many of my questions from my first bowl attempt.
Well done Steph, that was excellent for your first bowl, you've got a good teacher there, I'm a novice as well so I'm learning by watching as many turning videos as possible, at the moment I'm going back to basics quite a lot to reinforce in my brain. Just what I needed. Great information and demo.

You are a very good coach... And it's a beautiful piece of wood.
Excellent masterclass, well done Steph 👍

I'm watching this late. My question for Steph is 'how are your hands today?' That was quite a large beginner bowl, well done.
Wonderful just Wonderful
Two lovely people, nice to watch thanks
This is so good!!
Great video! Thank you👍
Thanks, it was helpful...
Sorry should have added that Steph did a cracking job!!
Awesome Video
If I had the time I would get in to it after the video😍
well done young lady
Great video for us beginners or anyone turning as always.Tool control and technique were wonderful. What type of oil were you using to coat and raise the end grain? Thanks again.
Hi Ralph, Colwin and Steph used a finishing oil on this project. Hope that helps :)

The variable speed control box comes as standard with the Axminster Professional AP406WL featured in this video.
Good information. Thanks for sharing.
Great vlog Guys. What Oil do you use to finish off?🤔
Great video. Inspired me. What lathe is being used? Is it suitable for a beginner ?

Shes a natural... Ben The Pen better watch out... Shell be the lead turner in the house before long!
I love this... I know I'm a year late LOL! This lady has the cutest laugh :)
Better late than never! Thanks for watching 😊
Hi Colwin. Do you do lessons at Axminster?
Hi there, unfortunately we longer offer courses at Axminster Tools. Excellent learning process. And you got rid of that annoying guitar twanger.
What lathe are you using?
Hi there, in this video Steph and Colwin are using the Axminster Professional AP406WL - this is available as either bench top or floor standing. Our full lathe range can be found here www.axminstertools.com/activities/woodturning/woodturning-lathes thanks for getting in touch!

Would have liked to hear the comments and commentary during the sped up portion. Maybe do outside one video and inside in another to not be so long
Turning spalted without a mask?
Hi there, thank for your comment highlighting your concern. Colwin says: "Spalted shouldn't make any difference to the thought process, ALL wood dust is hazardous to our health. Very interesting to watch and learn from, just a tad annoying when it’s speeded up and any talking sounds like Alvin & The Chipmunks.
Thanks for watching, pleased to hear you found it useful and we will take the feedback on board.
Please edit out the repetitive bits. First 12 minutes of the video should be no longer than 45-60 seconds.
Ok ok 9 of to is on 00
