A good training video. Only suggestion is to coat the pulley cover bolts with NEVERSIEZE. the bolts screw down through the deck where they are exposed to dampness. It will keep them from rusting into place. Nice Job.
Thanks for the simple to the point explanation. I bought the complete service kit probably a year ago but haven’t done the service. With your video I don’t feel intimidated to take on the job and it needs doing. I’m at 130 hours!!
Changed the oil on my S100 for the first time this morning. Just like yours, the oil filter was screwed down ridiculously tight. I have a pliers type oil filter tool so I could get ahold of it just fine, but it took a lot of force to get it turning, and I had to crush it pretty badly to get a tight enough grip on it.
alot of people don't know about the first oil change, all new engines have metal shavings in it. I change my oil after running it for a few hours to get rid of the metal shavings. I like that Mulch shield you have on there. Back in the old days we would hammer a screwdriver in that filter take it right off. I run pure gas also.
@MicahMartinDIY I paid $5.29 a gallon for pure here in Nashville, Tennessee, for my John Deere S100 the other day. I have a 25 year old Craftsman push mower 4.5 HP with 21 inch cut, I have use ethanol in it for years and will continue to, it starts on the first pull and don't burn a drop of oil. Thanks for commenting. I will be subscribing to your Channel.
I have a flat 3/4 of an acre. I don't need a big mower, it can be 30" but nothing bigger than 42", because right now I use a push mower, while that is great for a excellent work out, I'm not getting any younger (60 yrs) and anything is better than walking for 3 hours especially in a North Carolina summer. By the way, I don't need to have a Zero Turn mower, just a solid and not expensive vehicle. I was leaning towards a John Deere, but open. Thank you for your suggestions!
Thanks Erich! I'm in NC as well and I hope I'm still moving as much as you when I turn 60! This is a great mower for medium size yards such as yours and mine.
@erichvonmolder9310 my mechanic at work has a Honda push mower with a bagger, he told me that's one of the best push mowers on the market. It will last many years.
Haha! They must have for sure! I never use filter wrench to tighten. Hand tight plus a half turn, nothing more. I have never had a filter leak and it is much easier to service next time!
I had the same problem with my 1st oil filter. My only thought was maybe they do it to discourage DIY. Also I thought maybe it's to prevent theft because many big box stores have these tractors stored out side where it would be easy to come along and steal the oil filter. I had a different type of filter wrench that tightens onto the filter the more your turn it with a breaker bar. It worked.
Both of those ideas are plausible, even though I can't picture stealing an oil filter, but you never know these days. Glad you were able to service yours!
Great vid thanks! Just bought my first Deere (super used lol…about 15 years old). It’s an L100, but I’m assuming a lot of your methods will be the same for mine. Wouldn’t start yesterday, so I’m hoping a tune-up will do the trick!
One question: Do you really need to replace everything every season ? For example, lets say I mow my lawn once a week for 1-2 hours. Do Spark Plugs need to be changed after just 1 season or is it just recommended ? I can understand oil and filters but spark plug sounds excessive,.
I actually am thinking of doing everything every season, I do have a Cub Cadet not a Deer but the maintenance interval in the Manual is ridiculously long like the only thin it says to do every 25 hours is the air filter, and it says to not replace the oil till 100 hours which is bonkers, I think even the break in interval in the manual is like over 25 I mow about 1.5 to 2 acres and I don't get 25 hours within a season
Lol. Ah no. I'm sure john deerehas its Sched, Hours for when to do everything but... I do about 10 to maybe 15 hours a season. Just change oil, oil filter and maybe air filter once a year Before winter. I put a nice coat of wax or ceiling on it Every the couple months and before storage. I'm a car detailer. Sharpen blades and do the spark plug and fuel filter like every two maybe.
If There is no oil in a hydrostatic, does that mean the brakes will not engage(even with the parking brake engaged My S100 hydrostatic (brakes Went out) lawnmower rolls - please Help!
I'm sorry, I know very little about hydrostatic drive. I would check the fluid for sure, but there may be an adjustment somewhere that needs to be tweaked.
Good video. Basic stuff. my hour meter Went south after 2 seasons.. like most john deeres i've read. Ughh . And I only had like 30 hours on my tractor. Just figure every year change oil and air filter. two years sharpen blades and maybe spark plug and fuel filter.
Hows it do mulching? Ive got an old cub cadet ltx1040 thats comparable, but its a little lacking in cut quality. Its 11 years old and im wantin a john deere next
2:35 Lefty Tighty, Righty Loosy. What genius chose this orientation? It is contrary to the fuel cap, oil cap, and oil filter. Was it the chairman of "Dyslexics Are Us"?
Excellent video sir. Thanks for posting for all of us DIYers!
Glad to help! Thanks for the feedback!
Enjoyed this video immensely. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! Getting ready to do early maintenance on my 1.5 yr old s100. This was very helpful!!
Glad I could help Kayla!

Someone at John Deere must be hitting the gym!
Same here on mine. totally destroyed mine trying to get it off.
This was great. Detail, pointers, well done.
Thanks for taking the time 👍

Yes the ethanol free is the way to go on small engines. I love that mulching kit too, it works really well!

Thank you so much for this video, your video helped so much that I was able to take of the maintenance myself.
Good! I’m glad I could help!
Just bought a S100. Going to keep this bookmarked. Thanks!
Awesome! Enjoy it! I love mine. Go look for my other video on how to disable the reverse safety switch for the blades. That feature is so annoying!
@@MicahMartinDIY I've got it qued up 😅

For the oil filter I use aluminum foil to catch the oil into bucket.
Oh wow that's a great idea!
Dang, That's a good idea

There you go, yes I'd go through all of these things, it should help. Especially the fuel filter and the spark plug. I'd drain the old gas out too.

I do it every year to be safe, but check the maintenance frequency on your maual and refer to your hour meter. I run mine about 25 hours per season.

My spark plug boot is broken… Can’t find it where to bought it! Any suggestions?
Ooof. Good question. I’d check Amazon. They have everything! Good luck!
I am assuming this oil change kit works in the S140 as well?
I'm sure it is silimilar if not the same.
that was clever with the sandpaper
Thank you! It worked like a champ!
On the oil filter not coming out, just jam a screwdriver thru it. One of those long thick ones will give you the torque you need.
I thought about it, but I didn’t want to damage it in case it wouldn’t come off.

That sounds like a decent maintenance plan, especially with such low hours.

It mulches great! I don't even rake my leaves anymore, just mulch them and it does it nicely in just a couple of passes.
@@MicahMartinDIY that's awesome, glad to hear that. Thank you
How many quarts did you add? Can't find it in the owners' manual.
I believe it took 1 1/2 quarts. Make sure to check the dipstick after the 1st quart.
Yep, 1.5 quarts is what is called for.
Yes I do need it if work good how much is it I'm on palm bay

Good question. I have no idea. Guess I should have checked it!

Thank you!
Pierce a screwdriver thru and twist it. Truckers way to get the stuck filters out
Thanks, but I didn't want to risk not being able to run it if that didn't work.
Should have loosened or removed filler cap to aid in flowing oil out better!!
Not a bad idea!
Stick a screw driver through the filter…..it will come off. 😄
I thought about that, but didn’t want to risk it!
Gracias .👍👍👍
You're welcome!
Good info
Glad to help!
I had the same issue with my John Deere, the filter was way too tight. Come on John Deere educate your designer's and tech's.
Seriously. Anyone who has ever changed oil knows you don’t torque filters that tight.
Did John Deere donate these materials to you? Why pay extra?
No, they did not. I just wanted to demonstrate the use of all OEM parts. Next time I may get a value brand from Amazon.
2:35 Lefty Tighty, Righty Loosy. What genius chose this orientation? It is contrary to the fuel cap, oil cap, and oil filter. Was it the chairman of "Dyslexics Are Us"?
Actually, I think it is to prevent the bolt from loosening when the blades are turning.
