Underoath got me through a lot of tough times after my dad died when I was a young teen. They’ll always hold a special place in my heart. Technically speaking, Underoath were trailblazers for moving the post hardcore scene into mainstream appeal and they have continually evolved their sound over the years. Too many good songs for me to recommend just one lol but I would recommend something from their newest album to see how much they have evolved since “Define the Great Line”. That chord progression in the quieter section near the end defines this whole album for me. It comes back on the last track called "To Whom it May Concern" which is one of my favorite Underoath tracks.
Matt Goldman and Adam D did an incredible job engineering this album. Goldman really captured a great drum sound. And CLA absolutely nailed the mix on the record.
One of the best live bands I have ever seen. Back in like 2004-5 they played so free live. They made the music so much more insane in a live show. Amazing musicians
Underoath continue to be unlike any other band out there, even on their new album "Voyeurist" that recently dropped a few days ago. These dudes do it different.
Something I like about this track (among others) is the linear arrangement, where no major sections repeat (compared to standard cyclical arrangement with verse 1, verse 2, repeating choruses, etc.). Really takes you on a journey. EDIT: Whoops, left this comment in the middle of the video. Looks like you noticed this too, haha.
When the sun sleeps? Is that the right name of an old underoath song with the funky intro? Was the first one in my circle to find that song, on limewire or bearshare or something, was so damn hooked. Haven't thought about that in a time.
This band never wrote for radio. Their genre was never radio friendly. So your comment about non conventional arrangement and composition, thats what they did better than anyone else. In fact. Either this album or the next has exactly one song with a chorus. One. Lol reallllly hope you dig into more of them man. We would love to get you up to speed! They were big in 2005-2010 and then popped back up in 2013 and have released another new album this past weekend. For the next reaction to them, pick ANYTHING off of Define The Great Line or Lost In The Sound Of Separation and youll be blown away. Almost like the metalcore version of tool in a small small sense. Thanks Geebz!!!
Trying to figure out what song had a chorus on Define The Great Line and then "Under my desk this can't be it" hit my cerebral cortex like a ton of bricks. That song absolutely slaps dude. Especially when they do a breakdown and key change for like the third chorus. Probably my favorite by them.
@@samvakarian Their exchange is what made the band. Spencer is great, Aaron is great, but together...man. Chef's kiss. And not for nothing, but Spencer developed one of the best, most diverse voices in this genre over time. Somewhat on Define the Great Line, but fully by Lost in the Sound of Separation, dude's able to scream with as much inflection and emotive pitch as a normal singing voice.
Such a great band and their sound has really continued to progress. They just dropped a new album on Friday called Voyeurist that's definitely worth checking out. Thanks Geebz! Hope your recovery is going well!
Man I listened to a lot of Underoath back in my teen years 10-15 years ago. Thank you for doing this video! Absolute masterpiece of an album by Underoath!
This is probably the best song you could have started with for this band. It's the lead single from their best-selling album, and is really at the center of their work between the light and heavy. The more I hear this song the more I'm realizing just how much they packed into those four minutes, and this is after fifteen years of hearing it. I hope you also get to hear some of their older and newer stuff because they've been all over the map when it comes to genres.

He's not trained, no he's not referencing your favorite jazz licks, and yea he hits really fucking hard. but its sick, and you can't throw shade on the dudes hooks, not vocal hooks, drums hooks. Best drum hook writer of all time in my books, the first thing I remember about EVERY UO song is the drum part, and it always stands out to people. Those violent rim shots, wild hats, and really off beat accents create a super unique drummer that needs like, 10x the love. And thank you for mentioning the structure!! my favorite thing about underoath and has stayed with me throughout my life in songwriting. Surprises in structure are memorable and powerful moments
Great reaction. This album (define the great line) is legendary, one of my all time favorites. They have some other good work in their discography, but none of it stands up to this IMO. Returning empty handed would be a great place to go from here.

Desolate Earth is a masterpiece and doesn't get the credit it deserves, it's composition is super unique and the 3 minute build up for the last minute of the song is totally worth it.

This song is a deep cut for me, loved it since it came out, but watching this was like hearing it again for the first time. Gave me chills! I really liked your take on everything, coming from a somewhat outsider perspective. I'll keep it locked on this channel!
GoodNESSS I listened to this band in highschool and now my son listens and is inspired and I love these type vids! I’m biased so an honest opinion from a fellow musician is awesome always
I still listen to this band frequently, UnderOath has a very special place in my heart, their arrangements, their vocals, their lyrics(I'm not religious, but their writing is amazing). One of my favorites is their song "Its dangerous business walking out your front door"
This song gives me chills, I’m loving it so much! ”A boy brushed in red living in black and white” is another incredible song by Underoath you should check out if you haven’t already.
Aloha from California Aries represent I hope your show is getting better keep up with the good music brother keep exploring and if possible do at least like two or three videos a day and keeps me going thank you love you mean it aloha
Great video. There are some amazing songs on this album alone that would be an amazing journey; To Whom It May Concern, Casting Such A Thin Shadow and You're Ever So Inviting are some of my favorites - Lots of different dynamics across those songs. This album was a big turning point in the band's direction.
These lyrics are absolutely genius. Like you’re saying, both vocalists answer each other. UnderOath have other songs where they do this as well. They’ll have 3 guys singing at once but different lyrics. Amazing. Mind blowing. You're almost gone and I'm okay (I still see your shadow) To give you time to be afraid (But never your face again I remember your presence)
I'm glad that you covered this band, but man, this song is not the pinnacle of their quality!!! Paper Lung, Returning Empty Handed, Too Bright to See, so many tracks that show off their immense talent!!! Please do more from this band!! Their albums from 06 - 10 are a different level compared to other metalcore and still (my opinion) hasn't been touched!! :) 🤙🤙
@@Buckdalorian for me, Returning Empty Handed & Casting Such a Thin Shadow is one of the greatest "feels" that I've felt in metal music. LITSOS is however hands down, one of the best music albums \m/

As a huge metal dude and UnderØath being one of my all time favorite bands, this is a super refreshing reaction. I loved how much you moved with the song
The way you described this song as a journey is how the while album is. This album truly is a masterpiece and is perfect from front to back. The song writing, structure, album flow, emotion, power. Everything about this album is perfect. Put some headphones on, lay back, and enjoy the ride.
Oh dang, nice to see this here! I'm coming a bit late, other people have already mentioned how the harsh vocals are Spencer and cleans are the drummer, Aaron (Spencer started doing more clean vocals after this album as well), but I also wanted to note how you focused on the non-traditional structure of the song; one of the things that still makes the entire album, Define the Great Line, stand out to me to this day is that every single track is written to be that same way. There's only one track that even has something approaching a chorus, and most of the tracks run one into the next in a "continuous song" fashion. There's an absolutely astounding degree of care and attention put into the entire album and while people tend to prefer some of their other albums, I personally hold it up as their masterpiece work and a defining piece of post-hardcore and metalcore music.
when done well, the mix of harsh vocals and light vocals is one of the coolest things in metal. This song achieves this so well, one of the best of its era.
So you’ve hit Badflower, Motionless In White, UnderOath … all of whom have been on tour with or as support for … Nothing More … “This is the Time (Ballast)” to dive in to some Nothing More …OceanFloor is intro track to it FYI … as for UnderOath I saw them live early on and I immediately gravitated to them sounding like, Hawthorn Heights … will be glad to see all these bands loop back thru the local venues, hopefully soon!

totally surprised to see you do Underoath, LOVE the album this song is off of (Define the Great Line). Would love to see more reactions to Underoath Geebz.
Such a great song!
Excellent album to enjoy front to back. Segways'/interludes between tracks. Great album.
You should do more from these guys. Define the great line is an amazing album. One of those made to be listened to all the way through.
I can not tell you how many times 12 year old me played and listened to this song on my pink iPod shuffle I colored with a black sharpied , very cool to hear your opinion on the way this song was composed
"There could be nothing after this" - Underoath is my favorite song by them. Highly recommend checking it out
This song is a deep cut for me, loved it since it came out, but watching this was like hearing it again for the first time.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Fantastic breakdown!
What a blast back to high school. Always a great selection from the master decomposer.
Fun fact about define the great line. They used violin bows on their guitars for some of the more "ethereal" sounds you hear on some of the tracks.
The drummer does most of all the clean singing! Such an amazing band!
Kinda crazy how you are doing an underoath reaction at this point in time. They literally just came out with a new album too
This is one of the best melodic metalcore songs ever made
My Favorite band. So much nostalgia. Listen to their new live set (of older songs) ‘live from the Observatory’ engineers/band killed it in this set.
Very cool watching your reaction to this. This album is just incredible!
Great video. There are some amazing songs on this album alone that would be an amazing journey; To Whom It May Concern, Casting Such A Thin Shadow and You're Ever So Inviting are some of my favorites - Lots of different dynamics across those songs. This album was a big turning point in the band's direction.
The drummer, Aaron Gilespie, also has his own solo album and was in the band "The Almost"...check him out!
Wait until you find out that drummer you dig so much does the clean vocals too
Norma Jean Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child is a great album! Definitely worth a listen.
The real defining metal core album of the 00s.
Norma Jean! There’s a band I haven’t listened in a hot minute!
Aaron is a mad man in the drums especially while singing just so amazing and talented and just to be able to do that both is brilliant
These lyrics are absolutely genius. Like you’re saying, both vocalists answer each other. UnderOath have other songs where they do this as well. They’ll have 3 guys singing at once but different lyrics. Amazing. Mind blowing.
You're almost gone and I'm okay
(I still see your shadow)
To give you time to be afraid
(But never your face again
I remember your presence)
LOVE seeing Underoath on here! One of my favorite bands of all time. They're incredible songwriters and performers.
I love that you did Underoath! Please check out some more especially off of You're Only Chasing Safety
I love this band. First CD i ever bought was from them. Also, from Oahu too. Kapahulu area. Unique seeing a youtuber from hawai`i
It is WILDly amazing that he’s drumming harmonizing like that
I'm glad that you covered this band, but man, this song is not the pinnacle of their quality!!! Paper Lung, Returning Empty Handed, Too Bright to See, so many tracks that show off their immense talent!!! Please do more from this band!! Their albums from 06 - 10 are a different level compared to other metalcore and still (my opinion) hasn't been touched!! :) 🤙🤙
I can’t even imagine how many times I’ve listened to Too Bright To See/Desolate Earth
@@Buckdalorian for me, Returning Empty Handed & Casting Such a Thin Shadow is one of the greatest "feels" that I've felt in metal music. LITSOS is however hands down, one of the best music albums \m/
Idk man, this song might be the pinnacle for me. As far as I can recall, I don't have any specific emotional memories attached to this song and yet it brings me to tears every time.
@@DaDoubleDee Can’t disagree with those 2 choices😂 That 3 album stretch of Define/Sound/Disambiguation is one hell of a run
I was in like six grade when I heard this for the first time. Still gives me chills.
As a huge metal dude and UnderØath being one of my all time favorite bands, this is a super refreshing reaction. I loved how much you moved with the song
Just because of this review/reaction, you won a new subscriber! This is my favorite band!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Gotta do "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" next. Love Underoath
Loved this album as a young teen. Came back to it as an almost 30 year old, and I'm astounded by the quality, writing, and skill of these musicians at such a young age. Timeless album!
Thats what i love underoath. the guitar riff. Aaron's melodic part and how Spencer screams are both unique musically and vocally.
Aaron is one of my favorite drummers/singers/writers! They do have a guy playing keys (always while he’s head banging) as well.
