The Ukrainian people should take credit for liberating the Syrian people - because they have weakened Russia so much - rendering them totally unable to support the tyrant Assad any longer.

The progress we’re making shows that a brighter, more democratic future is possible in the region. Dictatorship only holds people back, and we’re determined to move forward. Let’s not generalize-every society deserves the chance to thrive under freedom and equality. ✌

You young man have nailed it. I was in Syria just at the start of the Arab Spring. I spoke to many Syrians who, at great risk, told me what it was like to live under Assad. One elderly gentleman said to me, “we need your help, not your hate”. Powerful and I still get emotional thinking of it after all these years.
I get despondent when I see many democracies seeming to take what they have for granted. Democracy, like everything requires effort. For those who have forgotten that……..visit Syria. They need our help now more than ever.

Not sure about that. Recent, not-too-distant history would seem to teach us that western help or intervention isn't necessarily beneficial, and that peoples are probably best left to figure things out by themselves.

In Egypt, hopes after the overthrow of Mubarak were for democratic elections, but the best prepared group was the Muslim Brotherhood. In Syria, the power behind the Assad regime was the Baath Party, the new leaders need to ensure that the transition allows for a true representative government to be established and elections held.
