Well with all the praise you gave the Karve I wouldn`t be surprised if that rises to the top of your favorite razor list. Will be watching for other reviews on the Karve. A really good soap too. Thank you.👍
Thanks, Michael, for pushing back on the washer thing. Karve's enclosure reads: "Failure to remove the washer reduces the thread engagement and damage to the razor may result." That would only be so if Karve had eliminated any threading beyond the bare minimum needed, in its judgment, to prevent damage, an eccentric feature that even a cursory examination of the post shows isn't in the design. Further, the washer is supposed to "prevent metal-to-metal contact ... during transit." But that rationale survives receipt of the razor, even if you don't live in an earthquake zone. Besides, there are noncosmetic advantages to using a washer. So thanks for sticking up for us washer-users. Separately, I wonder if you got an open comb plate and, if so, will be exploring how it affects the comfort/efficiency of the razor. Best regards.
I did speak with Karve about this, and they agree that using their washer should not pose an issue - but the warning remains in place :-) that threaded post is long enough to ensure no issue from the washer at all, and I want to keep the razor as clean as possible. So the washer remains on! I have to say that, having shaved with the C base plate, I am seriously looking at getting a C open comb baseplate - if I do, we will all find out together just how good it is!
Hi Michael- Great shave and razor review; thank you! Very happy to hear your thoughts this week on the Karve CBSS razor. Mine is scheduled to arrive on Thursday. I ordered it with a D plate, as that is what I used with the brass version. I didn’t realize there might have been a slight tweaking of blade exposure on the stainless version, though. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the D plate next week. I hope you have a great week ahead and all the best!
I don't know if there is a difference or not, I am under the impression that the brass and stainless steel razors are essentially identical. If there is a blade gap or exposure difference, I will have to look into that!!
I have to say Yaqi Brushes are Awesome 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼great quality and longevity.... Got my Karve Today Stainless Plate B very nice Razor...first shave very nice few little little nicks I got but maybe it was me..need more time to get the hang of razor.. Now putting that washer on would it take blade gap?? I’ll put my back on as long it’s ok?? Alan
Hi Michael i'm really liking the look of that razor.A Rockwell on a plate 4 is the most aggresive i can take.A 34c is my daily grinder. How would you compare the CB on a c plate to those?Any advice would be much appreciated.Cheers mate.
Nice video, mate! The Karve is a terrific razor! Impeccable machining on it. I would really suggest you try the open comb plate. I have the Karve razor in brass with both SB-B and OC-B plate. The OC-B plate is really just comfortable and has almost the same blade feel as the SB-B while being extra efficient.
I am seriously considering the C open comb, I think that would make a great option for anything more than 2 days of growth, or even a daily shaver! Not to worry, if I get one, I will 100% do a video review.
Great review Micheal! My brass Karve with an OC-B plate is the best shaving razor I own hands down, not even a question on how good it shaves, as far as I’m concerned it’s the best razor on the market.... in definitely looking forward to getting a Stainless at some point, I love the look of the new Argill pattern.
Thank you Michael, I am László from Hungary, this was a great shave! I have been thinking about getting a nice one from Karve Shaving, so this video helped me a lot. I defenitely want this razor! But since I am on the very sensitive side I'd rather buy with baseplate B and C....Thank you anyway!
Baseplate B will certainly offer a more mild shave, I think that head has a negative blade exposure (so very easy on the face). I think you may well find the C is not actually aggressive at all, but get both so you have the option to modify the razor and your shave as circumstances dictate. Thanks for watching!!
Great shave Michael. It sounds like you are slightly congested from allergies or something. If so, i hope you get to feeling better soon. I recently started doing only with the grain passes only going against the grain on my bottom lip which has helped tremendously. I also have 2 vintage straight razors arriving tomorrow.
Ah my voice...that is due to a rather long night of drinking, the second half of which required some rather "loud talking" over the blasting music, so a bit of a husky tone in the morning :-)
I have been thinking Michael for some time you might be showcasing this great razor in one of your videos, and true enough here is the video. It's a great, great razor. Something to last one a v. long time to even pass down to his progeny. A classic. I have the brass version of this in both the o. comb & straight bar versions. Smoothness and assertiveness in equal measures is how I'd describe shaving with this razor. Great looks as a metal artifact and as great a shaver. When I got mine (first the straight bar B, C & D plates) there were no soaps then. The soap looked a good purchase, too. Thanks for uploading.
Perfect balance of efficiency and comfort - so easy to use and ZERO negative face feel! I would agree that some lucky person or persons in my family will enjoy this for decades to come. Both my sons shave with DE razors, so I may have to get a second one to avoid any post-passing ugliness :-)
Great review as always, Michael. However, I would like to know which European artisan soapmakers you like the most in terms of performance. Price is not an issue. Thanks!
Abbate Y La Mantia, Saponificio Varesino, Pannacrema, Wickham Soap...Cella, but not Proraso (grin)...Tabac is good but I don't like the scent, then there are the soaps like the Lea, or the La Toja...God, the list goes on and on!
Your superlative description of the razor caught my attention as it describes exactly my experience with the Rockwell 6s. I've never tried the Christopher Bradley. How would you say it compares, if it can compare, with the 6s?
Smoother and with better edge control. The C plate is very close in feel to the #4, but smoother and more efficient. If you like the Rockwell, look into the Karve -- I think you will be very happy.
@@mfreedberg thank you....for blowing me away! I didn't think anything out would actually surpass 6s.🙁 I will now have to continue my search for the "holy grail" lol. I thought I'd found it in the Rock. Thanks again especially for the great videos. Cheers!
Based on vry positive with CC B/D-plates, I was daring to order OC F-plate 1.23mm gap. Expected a killer beast, but no. Result like R41, but still vry comfortable. One of the best shavers, if not the best. Cheers.
Nice review Michael. I have the brass c and D plates. The D is not as smooth for me A little to much blade feel. The C is just right. I have the C in the Open Comb and I wish I would have went the B

This is a great lather. Didn't see that coming from this soap. Why Maggards don't carry this razor? Which is the final price of this one? SO, if we had a combo with Icarus soap & Karve razor, we would keep buffing and overshaving all the time? Wooohoooo! PS Of course you have to try this razor with a beastly soap, like....you know... I am not sure if Maggards will carry this razor, they are managing their inventory very closely via the Karve site because demand is high with a waiting list. The soap? Much better than I expected! You can buff as much as you like, it's your face after all (grin)!
So is it worth investing a machined stainless steel razor, you think? I'm guessing it would most likely have a longer usage life expectancy then chrome-plated zinc alloy razors, right?
Absolutely, the stainless steel will outlast the zinc allow heads without a doubt. This is a beautiful razor you will enjoy using for decades, and it will easily outlast you :-) Make sure you have somebody in mind who will want to take it on!!

I have both, well I just sold the brass. Other than the brass smell, there’s no difference in the shave. The stainless requires less care to keep looking nice. However, if price is even a slight concern, go for the brass and some brass polish.
Shit post warning. The screw on brush handle made me think - some crazy idea about magnetic 🧲 snap on handles or a way to mount the knot to a handheld power drill
What are your thoughts on stainless steel vs chrome plating? From what I understand, stainless steel is more durable, but I've been finding that I have smoother shaves with chrome plated heads. I've taken a liking to the Rockwell 6c since being asked by a friend to find a good starter DE razor.
Yeah, I guess chrome might be natively more slippery, but honestly I don't think I would notice a *true* difference due to the lather -- a great lather is going to make them both perform and stainless steel is more durable. Simple solution: buy one of each.
Great shave Michael💈💈 The brass version shaves excellent with C/D plate. Is there any difference in the Stainless version, assuming you've shaved with the brass one? Plenty of threads on the handle post to use a washer, no worries there👌 I like Tabac, so I might like that soap as well. It seemed to lather up well in the L bowl😉 Nice video and reviews. Enjoy!
I have not use the brass Karve, but my understanding is that they are the exact same designs, just different materials. The washer? No issues fitting that thing on :-) This soap has a much truer tobacco flower scent than Tabac, and also smells good - ha ha ha!!
Hey Michael great review as always. How does this SS Karve compare to the Ti Timeless that you recently did a review on. If you had to go with one which one would it be? I have a brass CB and am loving it but have been hearing great things about both the SS Karve and Ti Timeless. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers 🍻
Very hard to say, because I don't have the Timeless here to use again as a comparison. The Timeless Titanium was *really smooth and comfortable*, and the Karve is as well. I think you are going to have to decide on price, features, and design, as they both offer truly excellent shaves. If you already have a Karve, perhaps go for the Timeless to fill out your collection?
The cool thing on the brush you can change the knot. The bad thing it is so expensive (compared to Yaqi brushes...) That i could buy both knots, two band and synthetic, and get two handles with it 🤣
yeah, this is an interesting conundrum: one convertible brush that costs more than two separate brushes -- but not always!! Sometimes you pay a bit extra for design/idea...and it does look cool.
Indeed, a wave of reviews, but that is the normal thing when something new comes out and the manufacturer provides review product to well-known established reviewers (and then also me). I do not watch others' reviews until I have done mine, to keep from affecting my perspective on the razor.
Thanks for sharing. Both the Karve razor and shaving brush are great looking products.

About the brush. Having fibers bundled in 4 sectors like that doesn’t seem like a logical way to create a mixed knot. If you want a truly mixed knot, the fibers should be mixed either at random or perhaps with one type of fibers in the center surrounded by an outer ring of the second type fiber.
Ah, but perhaps this is a logical fallacy. You are assuming that a completely random mixing of the fibers will somehow impart an improvement to the brush, but I would contend that the entirety of the face of the brush contains the same ratio of white to black fibers in this split configuration, so that *in fact* you are getting all the fibers all the time, and that the random mixing would offer basically no real benefit other than perhaps a different feel to the backbone. That was a long sentence.
Michael Freedberg yeah about that.... no. I’m right and you are wrong. Additional fun fact: the fibers will wear at 2 different rates, and as the brush gets older, the natural fibers will get shorter faster, and you’ll end up with a weird bumpy surface due to the split.
Have you used the brass Karve? If you have , any difference between brass and steel?

Yes, that's the name, I just could not remember it on the spot -- thank you!!
@@mfreedberg you're welcome. They make many great soaps, but the Karve private label and his limited release of Wild Rose are stronger scented
Is over-shaving an actual term/verb?
You bet! Do this: make five or six passes next time you shave, and see how your skin feels. That feeling? Over-shaving (grin)!!
is it better that rockwell 6s? thanks
Yes, I think so. The Rockwell #4 is my preferred base plate in that razor, but it is not as smooth and controlled a shave as the Karve.
Shit post warning. The screw on brush handle made me think - some crazy idea about magnetic 🧲 snap on handles or a way to mount the knot to a handheld power drill

This soap has a much truer tobacco flower scent than Tabac, and also smells good - ha ha ha!!
Who is Christopher Bradley?
A man of mystery, apparently.
@@mfreedberg that's what I figured.
Appreciate your input Michael....Cheers!
Darcy Variava I have the Timeless Polished Titanium 0.95. Brilliant razor and use the solid base plate and scalloped cap. Quality.
You are right with the extra money for the invention! The design is not my thing but i really love the idea with the changeable knot!
and yeeee the cb is everywhere now.whatever
Indeed, a wave of reviews, but that is the normal thing when something new comes out and the manufacturer provides review product to well-known established reviewers (and then also me).
I do not watch others' reviews until I have done mine, to keep from affecting my perspective on the razor.
