Too many governments want people to see them as the country itself so they have blind loyalty towards them. That's why I stay away from any patriotism in the first place. Flags and territories are not important. People are. If you want to help your fellow countrymen don't fall for the national symbols and rhetoric, because governments want you to think they ARE the flag and country, hence should not be questioned or held accountable when they act against their own people, or foreigners for that matter.
Yup, it wasn't just about terrorism, it was about controlling the masses. This is something the Chinese government is doing, and the bastion of freedom must not fall to this trap.
Whether he did it for selfish reasons or not his actions defended every American's constitutional rights against the criminal acts of a government that decided it was above the law. He is one of the greatest heroes of my generation as far as I'm concerned.

Because he worked for the government, which is how he had the access to the information, like the Rosenbergs. None of the journalists that continue to report on the files have been arrested and imprisoned. He made made an oath, he broke it, he has to live with the consequences.
K ris It’s not because he broke oaths and contracts that he’s a “criminal” (note the air quotes). He was charged with breaking a specific law (Espionage Act), he fled before he could be tried, and he hasn’t been tried in absentia. Since he hasn’t been tried and convicted, I don’t think he can be pardoned. Right now, he is only guilty of fleeing.
Any man who points out the severity of the lies the government tells the people they are supposed to serve is a Patriot. We should honor those who tell the truth and condemn those who lie, not the other way around.

I was still in the Army, when the whole Snowden thing blew up. I remember being at our base and our leadership telling us that we were not authorized to view all of the information being made public. We were warned/threatened that we would get a court martial if anyone was found to be viewing any of the information.

He's by definition a traitor, by acting against the duties and oaths he obligated himself to with working for the NSA, however what he did was heroic as he decided that the common good was the interest of society and not the intelligence agencies. It's not mutually exclusive. One mans hero is another mans enemy. That's how it always will be.

Except a lot of what he exposed was showing very clearly that the NSA had broken it's oaths, promises and obligations to the government. He didn't betray his government, he simply exposed the agency that was itself betraying the government (even if no doubt certain government officials knew to some degree about what was happening).

Yes and no. The term "terrorist" gets thrown around too much and too often misused. A terrorist is a person that uses violence and incites fear to achieve political goals. It's a very calculated mindset and isn't as common as people make it out to be. Being a rebel, a freedom fighter, a traitor, a spy, etc, doesn't automatically associate you with terrorism.

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and their appropriation subcommittees have extensive authority to oversee the intelligence community. The NSA can’t buy a stapler without the approval of those committees. That’s why Iran-Contra happened. Congress wouldn’t fund the CIA’s request to arm the Contras, so Reagan broke a shitload of laws by selling arms to Iran and using the proceeds of the sale to fund the Contras, as an end-run around Congressional oversight.

Having grown up in the early 2000's and finishing school in 2010 young people of today truly have no idea what it was like to grow up in a pre-Snowden world. After this happened so much has changed, namely there is so much more information openly accepted to be truth about how the US and European nations function which you used to be considered crazy for believing. Yet there are still so many people who aren't thankful to Snowden for this and even openly hate his guts despite constantly indulging in the wealth of information he has provided them.

Based off his account, along with the movie, his relationship wasn’t failing due to narcissism. It was because of fear. He started losing his mind realizing they were spying 24/7 and that he had created the means for them to do so. He started losing trust in everyone and everything around him. He was afraid to speak to her on phones, he made her constantly cover the webcam built in to the laptop(which was REVOLOUTIONARY at that time). Regular home life started getting weird and stressed because of how he was moving and she hated it. He tried talking to her but didn’t want to get her caught up in anything, which made everything that much more shady wit his half truths and things of that sort. As for the promotion, that was probably his last personal test. Like let me see if I’m wrong about these people. If you put in the work, you rise through the ranks and are a patriot. When they handed him a bs job he knew he was overqualified for, it must’ve answered w.e question he was leaning on to stop him from doing it. Cuz if you study Snowden, you know he really didn’t want to do it. He felt obligated as a patriot. As you can see throughout the story he always thought himself a patriot, a good old boy for merrica. Even when it was in the wrong ways. And I think THATS what got him. He was willing to do anything that was pro America cuz he thought America was telling him the truth. He thought his country was righteous and could do no wrong. Especially coming from a person who typically is seen as a failure before all this. Ego def had a part to play. Just like the typical mass shooting. A person who was failing, bullied and sic throughout school. Then in the real world Couldn’t hold job to save his life. Tried to serv his country in their darkest time but was too weak for that. So now he finds a role where he is actually usable. Who he always wanted to be apart of were actually the villains and were using him as a pawn in their game from the very moment they ever made contact. Just like some will snap in violence. I think he literally snapped, but in the only way he knew how. Through information! Just like in movies, when you wrong the tech nerd they always leak your darkest secrets. This was a real life high school musical played out on an international, professional scale. In this case you fucced wit the wrong one. They always tell you not mess wit the quiet ones. This is why 🤣 Sb: he was never supposed to be in Russia. Simon, I'm a resident of Baltimore, Maryland. NSA is in Anne Arundel county. Ellicott City is in Howard county. But for the most part... YES... the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area is basically a big gigantic military intelligence hub.

My Dad was a civilian contractor with Lockheed Missiles and Space (assigned to Onizuka AFB at Moffett Naval Air Station). Dad had previously been a Leftenant Colonel in the British Army working at British Aerospace. His clearance was such that all he ever told me about what he was involved in amounted to one statement just before he died. Dad told me, "I designed bombs to kill old ladies and children and I regret it." It was the 90's and my Pop was simply so overqualified that nobody save the American government would hire him. It's pretty sad that such a profoundly intelligent, gentle and funny man as my Dad was so sad at the end of his amazing journey through life. What I'm saying is this: Mr. Snowden, genius ain't all it's cracked up to be and you must be very very careful what you do with it. At the end of the day I think you will realize your actions, however noble they appeared at the time, killed people and that your misguided morality led you to very foolishly throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. I hope you are able to come to terms with what you've done and the ripples you've set in motion don't one day return to swallow you up.

I was still in the Army, when the whole Snowden thing blew up. I remember being at our base and our leadership telling us that we were not authorized to view all of the information being made public. We were warned/threatened that we would get a court martial if anyone was found to be viewing any of the information.

Having grown up in the early 2000's and finishing school in 2010 young people of today truly have no idea what it was like to grow up in a pre-Snowden world. After this happened so much has changed, namely there is so much more information openly accepted to be truth about how the US and European nations function which you used to be considered crazy for believing. Yet there are still so many people who aren't thankful to Snowden for this and even openly hate his guts despite constantly indulging in the wealth of information he has provided them.
In the end, I'm glad that the public knows what we now know because of what Snowden did.

Based off his account, along with the movie, his relationship wasn’t failing due to narcissism. It was because of fear. He started losing his mind realizing they were spying 24/7 and that he had created the means for them to do so. He started losing trust in everyone and everything around him. He was afraid to speak to her on phones, he made her constantly cover the webcam built in to the laptop(which was REVOLOUTIONARY at that time). Regular home life started getting weird and stressed because of how he was moving and she hated it. He tried talking to her but didn’t want to get her caught up in anything, which made everything that much more shady wit his half truths and things of that sort. As for the promotion, that was probably his last personal test. Like let me see if I’m wrong about these people. If you put in the work, you rise through the ranks and are a patriot. When they handed him a bs job he knew he was overqualified for, it must’ve answered w.e question he was leaning on to stop him from doing it. Cuz if you study Snowden, you know he really didn’t want to do it. He felt obligated as a patriot. As you can see throughout the story he always thought himself a patriot, a good old boy for merrica. Even when it was in the wrong ways. And I think THATS what got him. He was willing to do anything that was pro America cuz he thought America was telling him the truth. He thought his country was righteous and could do no wrong. Especially coming from a person who typically is seen as a failure before all this. Ego def had a part to play. Just like the typical mass shooting. A person who was failing, bullied and sic throughout school. Then in the real world Couldn’t hold job to save his life. Tried to serv his country in their darkest time but was too weak for that. So now he finds a role where he is actually usable. Where he can actually apply his knowledge to save the world and be a hero. And turns out the same people he idolized. Who he always wanted to be apart of were actually the villains and were using him as a pawn in their game from the very moment they ever made contact. Just like some will snap in violence. I think he literally snapped, but in the only way he knew how. Through information! Just like in movies, when you wrong the tech nerd they always leak your darkest secrets. The idea of hero being mutually exclusive with traitor is a false dichotomy. It's possible to be both. And I think both words describe Snowden.

Simon, I'm a resident of Baltimore, Maryland. NSA is in Anne Arundel county. Ellicott City is in Howard county. But for the most part... YES... the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area is basically a big gigantic military intelligence hub.

He did what was right but not one thing came out of it nor did anyone learn from it. Like imagine how many people are supporting Ukraine right now, completely forgetting they are basically lead by criminals in government. So if criminals are supporting Ukraine, then it begs to ask what is Ukraine and why are they so obssessed over it? And why Snowden who is a hero was given safety by Russia of all countries?

My Dad was a civilian contractor with Lockheed Missiles and Space (assigned to Onizuka AFB at Moffett Naval Air Station). Dad had previously been a Leftenant Colonel in the British Army working at British Aerospace. His clearance was such that all he ever told me about what he was involved in amounted to one statement just before he died. Dad told me, "I designed bombs to kill old ladies and children and I regret it." It was the 90's and my Pop was simply so overqualified that nobody save the American government would hire him. It's pretty sad that such a profoundly intelligent, gentle and funny man as my Dad was so sad at the end of his amazing journey through life. What I'm saying is this: Mr. Snowden, genius ain't all it's cracked up to be and you must be very very careful what you do with it. At the end of the day I think you will realize your actions, however noble they appeared at the time, killed people and that your misguided morality led you to very foolishly throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. I hope you are able to come to terms with what you've done and the ripples you've set in motion don't one day return to swallow you up.

He was a great man we from Balkan did not deserve to have as leader, he united South Slavic people to fight against occupators in WW2, transformed our nation from agarian hellhole into European powerhouse, not to mention he was the only man who stood against Stalin's murderous puppet regime and survived. Too bad we destroyed everything we had not long after his death...
@@user-vy2hv5pp7k yep, some people criticize his rule but he held Yugoslavia together until his death, an impressive feat when you consider how quickly Yugoslavia collapsed into chaos and bloodshed afterwards. And his life during ww2 fighting for the partisans could fill up a book alone. And as you mention he had some balls standing up to Stalin. When you look at the hellholes like Romania in the eastern bloc you appreciate what he accomplished.

I work for Booz Allen Hamilton as a Test Engineer, and we're still reeling from the company's association with Snowden. The case is highlighted in all our security training.
Um this thread is not where you get sympathy for that. Maybe do not enable govt to escape Congressional oversight next time.

I'm rather ambivalent about his hero vs traitor status. BUT John Oliver did an interview with him that is amazing. Maybe it further buddies the waters, but it is well worth watching.

He did what he thought was right for the betterment of the people, that's a hero in my eyes. The side effects of the leaked information was the fault of the NSA for hiding this information and lying to its citizens.
