      it is THE best track of the album and of the past decade in this genre. there is a total of 6 absolute bangers on the album, that i had to include into my rock playlists. rejection, realize, shot in the dark, kick you when you are down, witchs spell and demon fire. they all could have been on back in black. this album is at least a 8/10, with 10/10 being an album with only bangers.

    People need to stop comparing every record to Back In Black and those before it. This is a fun listen. Not a disappointment and sure it's no classic, but we should all be glad these guys are still making music at their age and still doing it this well.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      IKR? I actually thought about that before I did this review. It is even possible to approach an ACDC album the same way I’ve approached, say, Elvis Costello or Bruce Springsteen? No, it isn’t. But I tried to be fair and review the album in the context of what ACDC is and what their music aspires to be. And in that regard, I think they made a pretty strong album!

    • @shaneturch2334
      @shaneturch2334 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TrackXTrack they made a really strong album. Now, there’s a lot of casual fans who would agree with your assessment; however, all the die hard fans that I know rate it at least 8.5/10 if not higher. And yes, at this stage in their career we give them a bit of leeway. Find me another 73 year old rock vocalist that can do what Brian does. You can’t! And to have the boys back in one of the worst years in history; well, that’s fucking priceless!

  • @shanewright2772
    @shanewright2772 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    God Bless the Good Ship AC/DC and all who sail on her! My only nugatory complaint (and I by no means have an audiophile set up able to make me 100% authoritative on this) but the sound of the album just seems to lack a little "heft" to it, which is odd for a Brendan O'Brien job.
    Lyrics don't bother me - as someone who came up listening to a lot of jazz, I tend not to pay much attention to lyrics - they're not there for what the voice says, they are there for how they make the voice sound. Fortunately, the voice sounds pretty good here!

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not super critical about lyrics most of the time, but they are still part of the equation for evaluating any album. Still, that’s sort of my point when I say AC/DC isn’t “high art.” We shouldn’t expect deep thoughts in their lyrics. But I do wish they’d tried a little harder to be more clever and less cliche or obvious. They’re at their “best” when they lean into the innuendo, but if every song was like that it would get tiresome.

    • @shanewright2772
      @shanewright2772 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TrackXTrack Fair points well made - just for argument's sake I'd counter that they weren't high concept rather than not high art. High art can reach down pretty low - I figure ACDC are a bit like the Benny Hills of Rock and Roll - outwardly, it's all very one dimensional but much like Hill, when you actually go and look at the timing, the mechanics and the underlying commentary of their humour/music, there's a deep and ancient and venerable tradition being mined. What we understand these days as ACDC is what someone 90 years ago was meant to understand when they heard Blind Willie McTell sing "Statesboro Blues" or Bo Carter sing "A Banana in Your Fruit Basket" or some 200 years ago in any number of saucy songs from the Childe or Round Indices. If Art lies in the search for the essential truth behind a gesture - then ACDC (and Benny Hill) ar pretty accomplished artists, I'd say :-)

    • @ronwilliams1094
      @ronwilliams1094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hear ya' on the "heft". I believe it's not so much Brendon O'Brien's production rather than the guitar sound AC/DC has procured over the last few albums. Definitely more clarity in the tone but the 'Oomph' is all but gone. They don't sound like the gritty guitars of the 'For Those About To Rock' era. I miss those overdriven Marshall tones they blessed us with throughout the earlier years. :(

    • @stephenmcdonald338
      @stephenmcdonald338 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love Brians voice of course, but Bon told stories in his songs like no other and thats what also made ACDC besides the Young brothers. If they stuck with Dave Evans they would've been flops. If they started with Brian they would've failed also in my opinion. Bon was a poet and also a great singer to boot...and that made ACDC who they were and still are. BIB was lyrically the best Brian has done but am I right to say that it is a question to this day how much of the songs on BIB Brian actually penned. I love Power Up btw and they will always be the greatest rock band in history.

    Thanks, Kyle. Good review. I think the new album is great, the best of their last few or more. I definitely expect some lazy songwriting with ACDC and some same old same old as far as song structure, lyrical content, and even guitar riffs, but like you said they're doing what they do best. You didn't mention Mists Of Time. I'm guessing you found it unimpressive. I really like it. I think it sounds different, especially the chord change at the end of each verse (when he sings "ladies" the first time in the line "and the painted ladies") going into the chorus. Admittedly, I haven't listened closely to all the lyrics of the album yet. I've only listened to it twice so far, but really enjoy it. Thanks for the detailed, thoughtful review. You really put a lot into this.

    honestly it's their best album in YEARS man. i really dunno what my favorite album of theirs is cause i don't know their albums that well i have all of them on my ipod though and i haven't put this one on it yet but i fully plan too. Brian Johnson hasn't sounded this good shit since maybe Razor's Edge all the way back in (1990) the reason is really simple he's not touring but his voice had 2 years of rest so he was fine in form here. they did use Malcom's lyrics and did you see they recently said they have enough material for more albums.
    they explained how Malcom's Notes were incredible and in detail as well. so my guess they will continue to use songs he wrote or co-wrote etc..
    why not ya know? i haven't listed to it all yet but so far i love it

    Excellent!!! That's quite a good, honest review. Have to totally agree with the 7/10. For me, I enjoy Mists of Time as the best tune on the album. Couple of songs there are very 'flicky switchy' which isn't a bad thing. Not a master piece album, but a very solid album. We have to be honest. And, just maybe I might get to see them live before I die after all! :o)

    I'll give you my two pence worth. I was born in 73 and discovered acdc about 84. My first purchase was back in black. Unfortunately that was so good it made anything else pale in significance. Now! Here my gripe. I went back through their albums as a teenager and discovered an amazing rock band that I have remained loyal to till this day, hence this comment.
    My problem isn't the tunes they write. It's the production. Early stuff had that cool, hard, guttural edge to their sound. After back in black ths whole thing seemed over produced. Maybe a casualty of the whole MTV thing. Look at say zz top for instance. What I'm trying to say is that acdc are a live band. They're whole thing is built on the live show. Some of their album tracks translated to the live show and some didn't. I'd just like to feel that element of less refinement to the album. A bit more raw, ballsy and bluesy. It's what I love about them. Hope I explained that the way it was in my head. 🤘

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get what you're saying. It makes sense. Probably a matter of preference, though. I tend to like a more "produced" sound, perhaps because my background is in studio production.

    The song Rejection is a bit more open to interpretation IMO.
    They were a band that were (and still somewhat are) typically panned by mainstream music critics. And without caving to their criticisms just crawled right over them and dominate the rock scene as long as they're around. I kinda hear them sticking that metaphor for life in someone's face.

    Thanks for your review. I disagree though, AC/DC is sound for the brain and the heart too. I think they are vastly underrated, many times only the fun aspect is praised, but I think their quality surpass this, this is a really good and tight band with precises riifs with great feeling. It ia simple music, but not bad music by any means. I enjoyed Power Up a lot and the album is growing with every audition.

    I've listened to the album several times. I've been a fan for 40 years. I give it a nine out of ten. There's only a couple songs I don't care for but overall it's a great great album. They sound as good as they ever did. It's great to have the old line up back. Of course Malcolm is not there but Stevie does a great job. This was worth the wait and lived up to all the hype. And as far as comparing it to their previous few albums, I'd have to say I did like Stiff Upper Lip and I like Rock or Bust but Black Ice was a bit of a disappointment. That album was a bit too long with a lot of throw away songs on it.

    Well done. I haven't heard the entire album yet. My wife is getting me the one from Amazon that has a LOT of bells and whistles with it as a gift. If oyu care to do so, I would like your take on this year's Super Bowl entertainment, The Weeknd. While he's out of my wheelhouse, I didn't think he was an act who could fill a stadium or had a ton of hits as a co worker of mine told me. I think he'll probably had a diverse group of older, better known artists of a few other genres to join him. All genres except for rock more than likely.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may not be a fan of The Weeknd, but I think he's probably a good choice for the halftime show. He's one of the biggest current acts around, and may help make the Super Bowl feel a little "younger" for a change. Obviously, I'd rather see a rock act with more of a legacy, but I'm not sure who that would be that they have not used in the past already.

    Good review aside from mentioning an organization which I absolutely detest and a culture related to utter mindlessness. In my opinion, it's easily their best LP since "For Those About To Rock." Razor"s Edge was very good in its own right but I feel there is more passion and anthems with that classic AC/DC stamp & swagger here from start to finish. I give an extra point to the unbelievable production and engineering work which I feel really elevated the feel and sound of PWR/UP. 8/10.

    7 is way too low a rating & especially when you claim it’s the ultimate 2020 party album : I mean come on these guys are in their 70s & the material is simply outstanding so I think 8.5 to 9.0 is way more accurate : this album is non comparable to anything else they’ve released. It’ is it’s own entity IMO : the more you listen to it the more it grows on you like being powered up in the truest rock sense of the finest rock n roll music ever produced by one of the, if not the, most matured & solid band in the world. So yeah, I disagree with your review however respectfully given your meticulous conclusion.
