It is lovely, but I can't really hear anything remotely like the blues in the music itself. I feel like he would have been at home more with a marimba in this tune. There are a dozen instruments that don't sound all too different, either. Still, a nice performance.
@@headhunter1945 That's because the origin of the banjo is Portuguese but since a lot of musicologist are black they find the "'black' in the gaps" to use a modified expression "god in the gaps". Table-Country pinxing THRYM Firearms 27 What do you mean by any means? It has a skin head, a short drone string and it’s played in a way that is basically clawhammer.
TheMusicismyair The sound is very different (ferrule,..). It was popular to buy back in the days, because it was a lot cheaper than the piano. I think Joel Sweeney (from a ministrel show) made it popular.
TheMusicismyair Actually old American folk music is mainly descended from Celtic and English music. The banjo is the only thing from Africa. However, the American banjo is drastically different from the African banjo.
Wyatt Collins ...take a close look at Sana's playing technique....then look at an American clawhammer player.....maybe even one doing the song "Roustabout".......
You're right! It wouldn't have occurred to me if you hadn't mentioned it. Look up Roscoe Holcomb on TH-cam and listen to him and tell me you're not right.
Before the banjo you had the banjar. The oldest surviving banjar from the new world is from around the 1770s, and was collected by John Gabriel Stedman in Surinam, soldier and author. This banjar is now in the Museum voor Volkenkunde, Leiden in The Netherlands.
Lawd ha' mercy...this is where the Banjo came from. All this time I thought the Country Music people had created that. What music in America DIDNT come from black.
AV1611 BibleBeliever It's true, american banjo music as found in Appalachia mostly comes from the English, Irish and Scottish isles. However, the instrument itself owes much of its architecture and style to Africa.
@ippos_khloros It's definitely down-picking/stroking. Check out the "Missing Link to the Banjo?" section here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akonting. It's referred to as o'teck (stroke) and seems to be most definitely be where clawhammer originated.
hello ,im trying to found Akonting megorments so i can build one ,i have the 9" Gourd and the gout skin ,all i need its megorments for neck and lent for the 3 strings

+Eric Owens death metal has blues influence (not that they sound anything alike). i think this person just wants to say everything came from black people. even the screaming vocals they would probably say black people invented screaming lol
Ok then we're gonna stop rappers from sampling European classical music in their songs. By your logic jazz is actually rooted in white music too. The only instruments blacks play in jazz that weren't invented by whites was the drum set. If you can take out the white influence in American music I can just as easily deny the black influence in American music. Open your mind, and let go of the hatred.
you can hear the influence this has in folk, delta blues, blue grass and all those forms of music
Yes!
