I worked in parts at a GMC dealer from 78-80 and then from 86-90. Parts for these in 1980 were hard to find. I can only imagine how hard it would be now.

this is a 23 ft. GMC made 23/26 ft. There are around 12 that where stretched to 33 ft long. Those fender flares goes in front of the airbags. Looks like a good candidate for restoration.

Drove a brand new one in 1978, fantastic! Like driving a sports car. Only problem was more expensive than my 3,400 square foot home with five bedrooms and three full baths on 6 acres of land. It didn't have any bedrooms and a very tiny bathroom.
Not living in that home anymore, now worth over $300,000.00, ran across a 78 GM motorhome, could have picked it up for $5,000.00. But also needs a lot of work. That rear air suspension scares me for replacement.
Looking at rear diesel motorhomes, talk about astronomical depreciation as soon as you drive a new one off the lot.

other motorhomes of the 1970s were basically very square boxes sitting on top of a standard truck frame with dually tires on a large drive axle
...this, with the front wheel drive meant for a much more compact drivetrain that didn't have to run under the whole floor, even putting the rear tires in line allowed a wider interior without protruding humps and they have no axles running across so things like the tanks could be located low under the floor....it thus rides much lower for better handling and climbing in and out of.....really it was(and still is) a fresh design from scratch, vs a truck or bus turned into a RV

Too bad these things got horrific gas mileage & that's the reason that most have low mileage. I'm actually surprised that you don't see them with modern-day fwd Drive trains. It would be easy & cheap to find a Cadillac with a good Northstar d-train in a junkyard. Or even better yet a bulletproof LS 5.3 d-train from a newer Impala SS/Pontiac GXP!?! Both of those D trains made around 300HP & got around 25mpg hwy.... If I only had money,lol....

Almost half produced are still registered and on the road. They used the Olds Toronado 455 V-8 originally and FWD. They were low to the ground for better handling, and used two back to back rear wheels on each side with no axle for space saving and weight reduction. GM only stopped production because they needed the manufacturing capacity for trucks which had more profit and higher production capacity.

I'm assuming because it was a truck, truck emissions were a lot looser than cars. 73 being the 1st yr & I believe it was the 2nd yr of the beginning of emission standards. It had 265hp,15 more than the Toronado. Both share the almost 400lbs.ft. of torque. Torque stayed the same until 77. But the horsepower declined as the yrs went on. The last two yrs they used the 403 & had to make do with around 200hp & 330 lbs.ft.

jack ill be 41 this year but thanks for the compliment my mentality is definitely near my shoe size so good call on that one sort of a manchild id say and by trade i do metal fab and hold a cdl license that ive had since i was 21 I probably have more miles backward than most people got forward so doomed i am not. I was simply pointing out the painfully obvious, everyone wants to restore things but they dont realize the depth of whats involved and it becomes a headache and then they bring things like this to me and i then have to listen to stupid questions as to why dont we do it this way like they have mice in their pockets we!! i am doing the work not we!! people want to repair wiring as opposed to making a bread board and creating a new harness, fuses where relays should be! aluminum instead of steel it goes on and on and then they bitch about cost well guess what a good job aint cheap and a cheap job aint good!!!! and there aint no middle of the road.My dad is in his 70s and when we were younger he would get junk and make better junk but it was still junk thats why i made the dad comment it sounded like something he would say!! when people say wow thats nice they dont know what they are talking about 95percent of the time if its shiny people like it thats all then you hit them with the reality that its junk and they get angry and take it personal i didnt write the check for it they did but im the bad guy because they thought like yourself ooh neato!! and come to find out it aint so neat its sort of like telling someone their kid is ugly they know it but they dont want to acknowledge it!!! and as to following people yeah i dont all my friends have new car loans not me sir i drive a bone stock 78 monte carlo 305 with a rochester 2g, baby blue with white gut and blue carpet no cd or mp3 either cassettes for me if that aint original i dont know what is? my daughter wont even get in it shes too cool, hell her friends have nicer cars than me but people always have a good word when they see it ive never owned a new car closest was an 01 maxima that was a great car but not new at all!! I guess i was just pointing out the folly of man in my comment, id even say im jaded!! Well getting to the brain tumor those surgeries can be a bit tricky from what i hear, but that meningitis is no joke either ,no sir and you dont just get that lopped off at the local e.r. now do ya? last but not least i wont deny it i am an asshole in the grandest fashion from the capital a to the capital e, you certainly hit the bullseye on that one fella!! but as a matter of fact you just cant live without an asshole!!!! Bye jack and have a wonderful day p.s. when you take a shit, promise youll think of me!!

@ okay so I was a little Brash with my reply. I didn't know you were serious I thought you were talking shit,lol... We actually have a lot in common. I've been buying, fixing, selling cars for 20 plus yrs. I also work auctions/transport vehicles. I've loved anything with a motor since I was a kid. when I was talking about the RVs you're right I guess I should have been more detailed. I was strictly talking drivetrain maintenance. A few of my friends bought the van front-end ones from the early 80s. And other than the things I mentioned they haven't had to do much else. Interior wise that's a different story. It's going to take time/money. Two things they definitely have little of,lol.. two of them are Chevys. 1 has a 400 the other ones a 350. The other being a Ford with a 460. Of course it's the one that requires the most wrench turning, shocker right!?! Lol.. still it's no big deal. Parts are cheap and they're easy to work on. That's why I've been watching vids/doing my homework. Because of course I got to get one now, lol. Of course that ain't happening anytime soon that's way down the road.... Btw- My 1st car was a 77 Caprice Coupe with the cool Aero back window. It was powered by that same 305 2 barrel in your Monty. I couldn't kill it! NY winter's/salt did that for me. Still ran great when it went to the Boneyard. You can only weld/ repair a frame so many times,lol....

@@williedaniels3882 how reliable were they though!?! Hard to beat a GM V8 for reliability / longevity. I guess it depends on the years they were made. VW products have been completely hit-or-miss for the last 20 years... Bulletproof before then!

jack Macer hey jack glad you picked up on the sarcasm but i am a smartass have been since i could talk i do get fixin stuff up though, its awesome when you finish something and people realize what actually went into as you probably know!!! those rvs sound cool and done right can be fun and my older neighbor growing up had 2 dr caprice but he put a 402 in it and man that thing was fast for a big girl it lunched the 10 bolt so we put a 9in disc lincoln rear in it, lot of work and only had a lincoln tombstone buzzbox but all the welds held fine he ended up selling it. Im in n.y. too whereabouts are you? right now im upstate at my parents fixing some stuff for them my dad slowed down a bit but he helps when he can still loves to say that working with me is like trying to find the corner of an asshole!!lol!! so if you need anything hit me up on here maybe well swap emails well good talking to ya see ya later

patrick partridge not exactly. Maybe with your standard Winnebago of the same vintage would definitely not be allowed, but a nice restored GMC Motorhome of this vintage would probably be fine.

George White I’m assuming because of a risk of fire. Modern RV manufacturers are notorious for cheaping out on electrical work, raising the risk for electrical fire.

Is this guy for real or is this a gag? Maybe he should have done a little research about the vehicle and then did a serious walkthrough before getting in front of the camera. Prepping the RV before putting it on camera wouldn't have hurt either. Embarrassing.................
