    This would have been a great time to actually show the mechanism that is attached to the cable.

    I've asked so many "Mechanics" (Parts Changers) "will a parking brake work if all of the brake fluid is drained through a large leak" as this exact situation happened to my dad going down a massive hill in a 66 Thunderbird (the road ended at the bottom of the hill and "T"ed off into a county highway). They all always said yes, to which I asked "Ok, how?" and then they suddenly clammed up. I've always been curios and brakes are he one part of any vehicle I prefer not to mess with. This video was incredibly informative. My only question is is this a fairly standard setup for rear disc brakes?

      To my understanding, your caliper/disc brake setup (part he removed first) will activate when you push the brake pedal, and requires brake fluid to operate...your handbrake runs off a cable, (like a bicycle) and doesn't require fluid and is also why your e-brake or parking brake gives you further resistance the further you pull up or push down (activating it)

      I don't think this hybrid system is typical of most modern cars. I think more common is that the hydraulic operated rear disk brake also has a mechanical activated part. The brakes piston also has a screw thread behind it which is actuated by the handbrake cable via a lever and cam. I think the screw thread is so it can adjust as the pads wear. Anyone who has had to screw back in the rear pistons to put new pads in will have seen this

    I just drove like 7 miles and smelled this burning smell in my vette as shown and seatbelt noise on and didn’t know why it wouldn’t go away so put seatbelt on still not going away then finally figured it out and immediately released it. Lucky I still have this beauty

    Thanks for the video
    I always thought that the rear brake pads just pressed against the rotor when the parking brake was applied
    I didn't know that there was a separate braking system inside the drum

      Yeah honestly I have driven for 9 years since I was pretty young and I just never cared to wonder how it worked. And I always felt hesitant to use the parking brake in an emergency situation like when my brakes failed lol. I was stupid then

    back in 1975 I was a mechanic well I left that world long time ago. I bought a 2016 Chrysler town and country touring and noticed it had 4 wheel discs then I thought how the hell does the parking brakes work, before I attempted the complete brake job, thanks for your info

    didnt even know that rear disc brakes has drum shoes inside them for parking break til today, guess i always assumed the caliper held down when using hand break. are all rear disc breaks like this that have the drum ebrake inside?

  • @DummyReyes
    @DummyReyes 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So it means the caliper/brake pads is for the foot brake?
    And the shoes inside the rotor is for the handbrake?
    Am i correct? Thanks

    Danny,
    I have a manual Honda Accord Euro 2002 1.8i.
    I usually release my parking break and roll out my driveway as it's on a gradient.
    Today I released my parking break and the car doesn't move. Parking break feels ok -
    maybe a bit more play than usual. The parking break light on the dash goes off when the parking break is fully down.
    When I select reverse and try to move I can tell there is strong resistance.
    How to I diagnose the exact problem with the parking break and possibly fix?

      Adam it seems like the system isn't disengaging for some reason. Would definitely need to have it in the shop on a lift to examine the brake mechanism.

    easy to understand but not all systems work like this right? I'm also wondering what exactly is happening with the brakes so that the shoes expand/ brake pads on disc brakes tighten.

      Good question, and yes this is meant as a case study description of the parking brakes. More information on the brakes as a whole can be found here: virtualvehiclemd.com/animation_link.php?num=n784ldvybva0

    Okay, I had no idea! I thought it was like a second pair of calipers with metal on metal contact. That was a dumb assumption and I feel like a dumbass! Thanks for clearing up my confusion man! I assume 90% of regular modern cars with front and rear disk brakes use this system, am I wrong?

    • @dannysfitzwaycarclinic8323
      @dannysfitzwaycarclinic8323 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily--generally during a brake service or brake evaluation we will check all the brake components for wear and need for repair or replacement.

      @5urg3x 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for responding...I've got some weird stuff going on with my car :( Gonna have to take it to pep boys. The parking break slips and doesn't engage fully unless you REALLY pull up on the hand lever. I drive a manual too...I just got the front rotors and pads replaced and they are awesome now, but the back ones still need to be done. I hope that's what it is and by getting the back brakes serviced it will fix the parking brake issue.

      maybe using parking brake for uphill start in manual car, damage the rear brake.
      'Make sure the parking brake is fully released before driving away.
      Driving with the parking brake partially set can overheat or damage
      the rear brakes.'
