    Accepting Freedom and Responsibility
    Existential therapy posits that we are free to choose among alternatives, and thus we are responsible for our lives, actions and any failure to take action. If clients blame others for their problems, therapists in this modality would help them recognise how they allowed others to decide for them and the price they pay for doing so, and would encourage them to consider alternative options.
    Identity is the courage to be: we must trust ourselves to search within and find our own answers. Our great fear is that we will discover that there is no core or self. Clients struggling with their identity need to be challenged, asking them how they have lost touch with their identity and are letting others design their life.

    Thank you for this video. I am a current student in the counseling program and found this helpful to learning more about existentialism

    Sounds like the little girls innocence and authenticity connected to your innocence and authenticity, thereby dropping your fear and over thinking process. You got out of your head and into your body.

    I want to get to a point where "life ends, and that gives life meaning." Instead I'm stuck in "life ends, nothing lasts, so there's no point in doing anything." I don't want to feel that way but when everything eventually changes or people leave or die, my failing health is taking my hobbies from me little by little... it's really hard to find meaning in inevitable decay and death. That's probably my single biggest hurdle. There's stuff I wanna do but it's all anchored to "but what's the point?" even though I know the point is just to do the thing and live life. It's infuriating and intensely limiting and fearful and all the reading and meditation and reflecting I've done hasn't helped shift that worldview at all. I've been through too much and lost too much. Scared of dying, terrified of living, utterly stalled out. And who cares, coz nothing matters. Big fuckin shrug. I wish I knew how to see the freedom in it.

      I feel like I relate to this all too well. I've been having an existential crisis for months now and I want nothing more than to go back to the ignorant state I was in before it happened. I feel like these existential questions feed into or even straight up cause other mental issues like depression and anxiety, making the existential questions we have so much harder to deal with in a healthy way. Every day just devolves into me repeatedly saying "what's the point" even for things I deeply cherished before. The worst part is peoples' usual repsonse to outcries for help are just "Don't think about it so much" or "you give life your own meaning" when I don't even know what my passion is or even if I have one.
      That being said I sincerely hope you're feeling better. The way you described your feelings are exactly how I feel now. I won't say "know you're not alone" since that doesn't help me at all but... I just hope you're doing better.

    One point/question from me: It sounds like the therapeutic process, like so many others, still hinges on this assumption that people are not in touch with themselves and need support to gain a certain level of awareness or understanding about their own situation, values or belief-system and their roots, which then somewhat magically enables them to go forward. I think that is a somewhat limited view, no? To me, it would be arrogant to assume that our problems result out of some lack of awareness. Especially when it comes to death anxiety and existential questions, it is easy to get to a conclusion of the utter uselessness of life, which arguably is a factual one (we will die one day and we will - to our knowledge - fade into non-existence again), while all the discussions of meaning and values are a constructed system for intelligent beings to 'trick'/delude/persuade themselves into living their life. I don't see how any level of awareness would change this. How do you get people to basically lie to themselves to construct an arbitrary meaning for their own life, and even more important, how do you get them to want to be doing this?

    Why do you say existentialism is not a philosophy?

    • @Counsellingtutor1
      @Counsellingtutor1  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because it classed as postmodern and is a way of thinking and being as opposed to a rigid set of theories, thoughts and ideas
