Lived with parents at Yeronga, experienced the tornado that went through Brisbane and our suburb the November before the floods. We lived in a big solid old Qlder, we heard other people's rooves and timber hitting out roof, our mango tree was hitting the ground swishing from side to side. Flats around the corner lost their entire top story, houses demolished, all the iron from rooves from around the suburb was stacked along the Yeronga state school fence as if it had been deliberately placed there. The local picture theatre was distroyed, lost it's roof. FLOODS: Then came the floods a couple of months later. Down the end of our road was Fairfield, the flood waters came up to where the road travelled under the railway line. Still remember people and their boats, going out to rescue people, their pets and what they could save of their belongings. I worked in Eagle St, our building was flooded up to the 3rd level. Had to stay home for a week or more. River at Goodna and surrounds was 30 - 40m over the highway. Definitely a once in a lifetime event, will never forget it. To have your mind blown, just go and see the marker at Dutton Park, opposite the cemetery, just as you start to go down the hill there is a little drive in carpark on the left. If you look at the marker there and imagine the water at that same line/height right across the river to the otherside, unbelievable! Thanks for posting, very interesting footage.
I was 14 years old at the time of the 1974 floods. We lived in Stafford near the border of Stafford Heights. We were on raised ground so we were fortunate not to be directly affected by it. But we watched the 6 o'clock news every night and read the newspaper each day to stay up to date with what was happening. None of us could believe what we were seeing with our own eyes. Dad couldn't get to work in Fortitude Valley cause there were no roads leading into it that weren't under water. I have never forgotten going into the city with my mum when the flood waters went down. The city stuck to high heaven. Everywhere was thick caked on mud. Basements of department stores were destroyed along with all their stock. There were sales to try to help businesses recover with what they had left. I was so proud to be Australian as everyone came from far and wide to help others they'd never met. I moved to Toowoomba 25 years ago. I experienced the 2011 floods of 3/4 of all QLD again. Standing in my kitchen looking at the large glass sliding doors covered in water as if my house was underwater was a scary situation to be in alone. I will never forget these floods as I will always remember the 1974 floods and the years it took for Brisbane to get back on its feet. Thank you so much for this video. I hope no one ever forgets how much so many suffered and how many came to help. Cheers
That brings back some memories.....Mum and dad had not long bought a block of land at Albany Creek and dad built the house. I remember people were saying 'why do you live way out there'..........Brisbane and surrounds had really taken a beating. I was 13. I remember we joined the 'mud army' and sweeping mud out of houses out at New Farm. The oil tanker Robert Miller broke it's moorings and was saved by two tugs else it would have dammed the Brisbane River. Thanks for sharing this video..
At 3.29 is the corner of Butterfield Street and Bowen Bridge road Herston showing the Bank on the corner and the row of shops just up from it. I think the shop the lady was standing out front was Perrot's the florists. I was growing up in Butterfield Street during the floods and we lost everything. Thanks for the sharing it brought back memories.
As the flood water dropped my dad, mum & I waded across flooded paddocks to get to our place before the looters did. They weren't far behind and pretended to offer help and then tried to take stuff when we declined their help - it got ugly. After we got them to leave some decent folk turned up with hot soup and tea for us as we cleaned out the place. The water was well over the powerlines for 5 days at our place.
My father in law was a bus driver at the time, told us about driving through the inner city, water washing into the bus floor and wetting his feet as he drove.

I was at indoopilly at boarding school old nudgee college at it was a island Brisbane river flooded in big time chopper in supplies
We got stuck in Brisbane, trying to go north in the caravan…

Looking at the history of all the State & Territory Capitals, only Brisbane City Centre has ever been flooded.
Brisbane is a river city and the Brisbane river is much larger than the Yarra , Swan or Torrens. Sydney & Hobart are both harbour cities.
