Bought this bike from an overseas military program three years ago as a 16 model, which turned out to be the last year. Change the exhaust, and the rear shocks (I went with V&H and Progressive suspension), and you've got yourself a hell of a motorcycle. I've ridden many Harley's, and maybe I'm biased because it's my own bike, but you really can't beat it's versatility. It's light (compared to touring models that is), more than enough power, and comfortable. You can take off the windshield and bags for a purist look, or ride it fully dressed across the country (which I've done). Truly a jack of all trades. Most underrated bike in Harley's recent history.
I own a Switchback since 3 years and i am quite happy with it , no breakdown, no problems . That model was underrated and some hardcore Harley riders laughed at it , saying it was just a poor man's Road King or a tourer for the ladies ! Same 103ci engine than the big tourers , but less weight and the agility of the Dyna . It just lacks dual front brakes and improved suspension . I have added a crash bar , a detachable sissy bar with luggage rack , swapped the handlebars for a slightly lower one and relocated the turn signals on the fork for a better look The exhaust is still stock because a dont like the shape of the ones from aftermarket .
@@dethzero8337 It does the the job perfectly well on long distance rides and the riding position is confortable. I ve never ridden a Kawasaki Vulcan so I can't do a comparison . In my opinion the Switchback was one of the best value bike for the money H-D ever made. Ride safely.

Man, this always makes me nostalgic watching your videos. Almost every time you pass two of the houses I grew up in. (Harrisburg Pike and Nissley Rd) I still remember when they JUST built the small industrial area where your shop is too. Hell, I even remember the A. Herr dream park being built. Jeez things are changing around there.
I have the 2016 with the 103 high output. I love it. It slides from commuter to tourer with ease. I'm 6'2" and not at all cramped on it. I did add the Tall Boy seat. It has floorboards for my wife as well now.
The Switchback is truly an underrated Harley motorcycle. I had a 2014 for 2 1/2 years before trading it in for a Street Glide. I loved that one moment you had a touring bike, easily remove the windshield and hard bags, and you have a nice looking naked bike.
Tim Jenkins I been thinking of swapping out for a street glide.Do you regret going to the glide?I love my bike but feel kinda weird about it and that’s probably very stupid reason to get a street glide
This bike was incorrectly marketed. It checked off all the boxes I had. They tried selling it as an upgrade from a Sportster or a bike for a women. It's a hotrod. Traditional FL type styling. Less weight same power, six speed. Not great for long haul touring but day tripping or weekender. Lighter and lower seat makes it easy to maneuver. Saves the lower back. Needs a bit more rear shock travel. Should of had dual discs up front. Bags could have been just a touch larger. Overall a great convertible bike the checks off a lot of boxes. Just not enough boxes for the masses, since they dropped the model!
Your switchback video on the red one you had is actually what helped me buy mine this year. After a couple local test rides last summer i noticed i have more leg room than a road king and shaved like 200lbs its my fav bike ive owned
The Switchback is the closest to the classic 1960s 1970s Fl Flh. Shorter wheelbase, tank emblems. A classic look. A more traditional seat would be nice, not everyone wants to sit down on the frame rails. A nice solo seat above 27 in above the ground would be nice.
well up until 84 all big twins had the same frame (excluding the FLT). an FLH was the exact same bike as an FXS Lowrider, just with different tins, wheels, dash, and front end. the switchback is just a callback to the old style.
The FLD is a nice bike that never sold well. It had a reputation for too much vibration caused by the big heavy muffler. Another common complaint was the wind blast, the stock wind shield is too low for most riders and puts your head in the wind buffet zone. The saddlebags are small but useful but they have a very funky latch that takes some getting used to. If you want to set this bike up right you should consider putting a larger windshield on it with fork mounted wind deflectors, a full aftermarket exhaust with a tuner and add some additional storage capacity with a luggage rack and a bag on it. Other nice to do mods are the usual H-D stuff, change the grips, add some risers, get a better seat and an engine heat deflector and you'll have yourself a great ride.
I have the.same bike Superior Blue . 103. Vance&Hines muffler. It's got all L.E.D. lights JW Speaker headlamp..it's got a mustang solo seat..mine has an EGLIDE GOODIE bracket and I mounted a Harley Ultra Classic Tour Pak..I'm in Florida when people see me on the interstate it local they think I bought a Street glide. It's beautiful. But I ride my 2017 Sportster 1200Low T more..the switchback is my going north vacation bike..good video. Good job
I agree. I hated the idea of putting saddlebags on my fatboy. Now id feel weird without them. I always have something to put in them. Just purchased frozen tacos from trader joes...came home in the saddle bags.
i'm thinking about a used one with very low miles and it's a great looking bike except i don't like the look of the wheels. could they easily be changed out to a regular spoked wheel and still have the correct brake discs?
I bought mine last Dezember and because of Winter I didn't ride much. But the first rides i' ve made makes me so happy. I drive Motorcycles since 40 years but this is my first HD.I' ve also tested a used Road King with the same engine, but the Dyna is more nimble i think.
IDK if people realize, the Dyna was the original bagger and Glides, in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The FLHX's and Road Glides didn't come out until the early 2000s. The Electra-Glide and the EVO engine that came out in 92, along with the Soft tail models, after Harley bought the company back and came out of bankruptcy from AMF, the biggest bike was the Dyna with a 1300 cc motor, the the 1100 cc Sporters. Hell, Harley made a dirt bike in mid 70s!
I have a 2006 anniversary edition red white and blue and love it, I did put a set of Viking saddlebags on but I almost bought a switch back but it’s the same as what I have so I didn’t get it, just happy with my dyna
Back in the early 2000s had a 98 dyna supper glide that I did some custom work on it I put that gas tank you got on there was tank for a fat bob I think they called it . I put the key and Speedo up there and I put hard leather bags on it. Still had stock fenders but with a quick disconnect windshield and forward controls it was a fun ride.
Thought this was about a Bagger... Street Glides and Road Glides are what baggers are made from, mostly FLHX's. I've had Dyna-Glides before, and Dyna Low Riders before. Along with Sporters, I prefer the FLHX's, the Dyna and especially Sporters are too wobbly and squirrely at speeds above 70 and when stopping, in my 35 years of riding. But perhaps, because I'm 5'9" and 165 lbs, light bike and light person doesn't seem to work for me!
Wow, its rare for a Switchback to have low miles, people who bought them usually put tons of miles on em because they were one of the best Harleys outside of the touring line for long distance riding. Also see that Harley has noticed and the new Sport Glide is basically Switchback on the new Softail platform, just a bit sportier. Either a Switchback or the new Sport Glide would be great bikes for long day trips or weekend trips, they can also hold their own on a twisty road without scraping too much.
The switch back is very cool and comfortable... believe it or not my Suzuki 99 VC interceptor which 20 years old rides just as nice ... not taking anything from Harley but it’s ironic that Suzuki made this type of bike back then ...
I've had 2 switchbacks handles great. Looks better with duel exhaust. Im older had to trade in my beloved streetglide. Im very happy with this FLD. Yes you can take rode trips on this bike.
Like the blue color. Nice little run around bike. Have big Ultra but this would be nice to run around town or short trips. Big bike is too bulky to just do short trips.
I had a 2014. I purchased it in Alaska rode it to New York. I hated it. Glad I kept my 08 Dyna, Sold the baby bagger. I just purchased the 2022 streetbob. That is an awesome bike, but I still ride my Dyna.
I bought a matching fairing for mine.Great bike but I loved my 883 that I wrecked a couple years ago, this is the better bike I guess and it’s awesome and looks great with those cool propeller rims and bags and all but I gotta say I get a little bit of a sick feeling when I see it next to a larger looking street glide,I mean I shouldn’t feel like that because so what but I do.I also love how it can be switched to a different look in minutes.
I like this bike, buuuuutttt , it is a poor replacement for the 01 to 03 Dyna T-Sport which is an amazing bike. What I do like are the hard bags, which are lockable, unlike the T-Sport fabric bags. What I DON'T like are the bars and the floorboards. Give me some mini boards or aero pegs and a drag style handle bar. (Yes I had a T-Sport and am biased)
The new engine has four valves per cylinder for better performance. A single cam shaft opening the poppet valves via tube enclosed push rods. Seems like a hydraulic clutch lever, clutch pack, might work nice.
yeah fxr frames are just completely different, designed my eric buell to compete with the up and coming japanese cruiser market with the vmaxx and such. they were super rigid frames with the glorious evo engine (shovelheads from 1982-84) and are often named the best handling bike to ever come from the MoCo (aside from eric buell's sport bikes based around the sportster engines)
H-D made the Sport Glide for a few years. The Switchback was the predecessor to the Sport Glide; hard bags, removable screen, 2-into-1 exhaust, case wheels. As a used bike, the Switchback can be a good buy, but you just need to be savvy of used bike values. A good used one should hold its value well.
The Switchback is probably the tallest of the Dyna line and to say it's for the ladies is wrong. If the ladies want a Harley that's not lowered don't go for a switchback.
