Having Seen this boat many times, whilst visiting the area, a little of it's history should be mentioned. The boat sails on the Traunsee in Austria. In the mid 19th Century, it was caught in a storm in tne middle of the lake, and sank. It Lay on the bottom of the lake for circa 100 years before being raised and restored. In summer, it sails most Sundays with a Jazz band on board, and a leisure trip on it is a beautiful way to spend a nice sunny afternoon.
A lovely lady with a fantastic machine, and a good video. We have a similar steamer in Norway, her name is DS Skibladner and was built in 1854 - 1856. She is the world's oldest operating Wheel steamer in scheduled traffic, and goes with passengers in the summer. She is 165 feet long and 16.7 feet wide, she has a triple expansion machine of 606 horsepower. and the top speed is 14 knots at 44 rpm. She can seat 230 passengers and crew of 20.
Bonsoir Harry, Tu as raison, Gisela a une superbe machine ! Bi cylindres, compound, et elle a l'air neuve, la grande classe ! Merci pour le partage, Amicalement, Raphaël
My grandfather was a chief engineer in the merchant marine in the 1920's, I am a live steamer in California. Well done and extra special to see a side wheeler in operation.
Would you please excuse my late answer: I like the Gisela because of her classic original engine with its old reverse gear - it is a very special job to operate it in a correct way. Thanks a lot for your friendly comment! Greetings from Austria!
Superb video with excellent descriptions of what is happening in the engine room, well done! A beautiful ship with a fascinating engine. Thanks for posting your work.
This engine has rocking cylinders. I had a toy steam engine with a rocking cylinder, and the rocking action itself effectively operated the "valves" such as they were. The toy engine could not be reversed.
really neat clip!, I got my little brain wrapped around the basic concepts, I will root around for more information on these type boat engines. query; in one of the small piston cavities, looks like a thick type of oil, is this used to absorb excess heat?
I am of an age whereupon my RCN apprenticeship involved operating a triple expansion engine with the subsequent palm-slap temperature testing of rotating big ends - if I had ever been seen doing that while holding a rag in the same hand - my engineroom CPO would have dented my skull with the Weir's pump spare piston rod.
Möge dieses Juwel der Schiffsbaukunst der Nachwelt noch lange erhalten bleiben!
Beautiful steam engine and boat. Not too many boats like that one anymore. I'm glad to see it still working :) Thanks for posting this fine video!
RIP Harry... still loving your content over and over, six years later.

Thank you very much for the compliments - I always try to unterstand, how these things work. Greetings to the UK
Most people on board couldn’t careless about that well maintained and elegant steam engine below decks.

What a beautiful machine. Made by? And when built?

Die Disbar in Dresden hat eine ähnliche.
and to think these engines were designed with pencil and paper, no cads no cnc ,just human minds.

I worked on a triple also. I thought a paddle wheeler would have two engines for manouvering.
SPLENDIDO
Машина с касающимся цилиндрами Раритет!!!
