Harlem 125 Street was in the middle of a massive renovation. The outbound platform out of Grand Central had yet to be renovated when this video was filmed and one track was out of service because they were replacing the viaduct.
@@tre-est-7314 Not the same as in real life. Train Simulator you can see it being ran on 4 tracks while in here it's still 3 tracks. Also the FL9 is paired with modern Comet coaches rather than the older Comet coaches.
I remember riding ACMU trains being pulled by a couple of diesel engines on Huson Line in January of 1996 because of heavy snow that blanketed the region. The train cars got so packed that the engineer skipped a bunch of stations as we made our way to the GCT.
It’s sort of weird to think t 2 that they didn’t know that in about 2 years planes would crash into the twin towers and in 22 years, there would be a global pandemic..
As weird as it sounds, even after thirteen years later, I can still smell the interior of the M1A fleet. I sadly never had the chance to ride the ACMUs in revenue service.
Wow, the "Disaster Class" (FL9-AC's) on video!! Now that's a sight for sore eyes especially being that they've all been scrapped now. Excellent look into the past. Thanks for uploading this!
All of this stuff is now available in HO Scale and almost as much in N Scale..FL-9s, 1100's, M3s, Ms, P40s, P40s, F40, you can even find New York Central stuff available
Those trains operate on the New Haven line. About 25 or so minutes north/east of here in Pelham, the power changes from third rail to catenary for them.
I wish I would have explored Metro North at this time, I only rode Long Island Railroad trains. They have different rolling stock , its sad that there is less variety these days
Nice throwback video. Interesting to see the Shoreliner cars actually organized correctly between MN & CT trains back then. Now, they're completely mixed/matched.
@@RogerBates7 well the only trains with the organized cars sets is Amtrak (Amfleets) Long Island Rail Road (C3 cars) and NJ Transit (Bi-Levels and Arrows) I hope in the future they don’t get mixed uo
I noticed some of your commuter EMUs are are equipped for both third rail power and overhead catanery via pantograph, much like London's Network South East...
FL9s 2026 (2:44) and 2011 (5:22) are now operating on the roster of the Cape Cod Central/Massachusetts Coastal Railroad. Sold from a CDOT auction in New Haven around 2018.
As a kid I remember riding one time on an ACMU. Worse experience. Train was packed and the door had to be manually opened which was extremely heavy. Still remember riding on the M1.
Unfortunately, since they were allowed to run diesel for emergencies, they had a lot of "emergencies". I remember being in Grand Central Terminal in 1987, and it was full of diesel smoke. From what I read on rec.railroad, apparently the workers got tired of having trouble getting the diesel engines started back up when coming out of the tunnels, so they would just run diesel all the time.
Those FL9's have awesome horns! What line is the White, Blue, Red paint scheme? I love the New Haven line paint scheme especially on FL9's and P32C-DM's. Also this is literally all I know about the MTA Commuter System. Other than what lines there are (I have a map), the fact that train carry converters for Direct Currents from third rails because there prohibited from using diesel power inside the tunnel into Grand Central. I loving learning about these things so I subed too!
They are prohibited, but they did anyway (at least in 1987 when I was in Grand Central Terminal). Supposedly trouble to get the diesel engine started back up when coming out of the tunnels.
Running diesel, as you can hear. They are supposed to run off the 3rd rail when in the tunnels, but at least when I was in Grand Central Terminal in 1987, they ran diesel in the tunnels as well, filling the station with diesel exhaust (ackph). Reportedly this was due to trouble getting the diesel engines started back up when coming out of the tunnels.
wow. The station hasn't changed much but the rolling stock really has. Not an M7 or Genesis locomotive in site.
Donagh that’s because they did not exist back then
@@ROTE Yes exactly. A different era of traction entirely.

I think they already had the Genesis P32s at the time but there didn’t happen to be any in the video. They were new at the time.
The M7s were being planned and the GEs were being delivered
Taken on my 8th birthday - boy do I miss the 90's and these trains (especially the FL9)

Im a new yorker living in ireland i miss the trains over there
Then come back
Did He Come Back?
Those are some damn impressive S2M Horns.
They're RS2M, so they sound a little different.

So this was the Metro North at Harlem-125th Street in 1998
I guess so..
So many old fashioned cars..

No it’s the Long Island Railroad at Jamaica in 1999
@@lirrindevelopment8926 no it is not
Pre 9/11 railfanning. When you could film as many trains as you want at almost any location without a single cop bothering you.
i was thinking that as well

Ahhhhhjhhh, the magnificent metronorth line in all it's glory.ya just can't beat it. Period.
Wow I never realized there were railroads that still used F units in the late 90's. Sweet.
Until 2009 actually
The MBTA had FP10’s till around 2010
6-19-98- That's just 7 days b4 I graduated high school
3:57 The red Metro North train are the Connecticut State ones
James Leopard Correct!

I don’t like that even with NJ Transit and Septa Cars are mixed matched with the center and side doors

There's still a round trip per day on the Waterbury Branch that uses Shoreline East equipment - sometimes you get a P40, sometimes you get a Geep.
A geep?
EMD GP40
This is a great time to be in railroading, All this stuff is available in HO SCALE.....
Uhh nope
The visual contrast between the new platform on the left and the old one on the right is amazing. It's like the past and future in one frame!
2:44 are the F3 AA Diesel Sets
That Leslie RS2M shut down all the car horns for a couple of seconds.
7:29 ohhhh that sounds like the LIRR C3 bi-level car horn 😮
nobody at the station with a cell phone. weird to look at that now.
the horn on 2005.....just beautiful
Wow, things have certainly changed. No more FL9s or ACMUs.
5:38 train to Danbury?

Loving all the old school train and Ironically, this video was taken on my birthday! :o
The NH Locomotive @5:25, all I kept thing of was the cops chasing Otis at Grand Central in Superman.

Those AMCUs and M1s though!
ah this must be when they reconfigured the park ave viaduct. i notice there are only 3 tracks here
They use P32s. They used to use P40s on some of the branches like Waterbury and Danbury.
1:07 I remember these classic multi unit cars by far one of my favorites models that was in service on metro north
trying to figure out what that horn is at 5:19.
That horn is a Nathan Airchime K2. Its manifold is equipped with bugles #1 and #2.
Excellent video, Looks like a good place for train races - greetings from Ireland!
Thanks COMMUTER29000HD, glad you enjoyed it!
06:14 I walked by The Constitution State car just the other day in GCT! It’s still out there earning its keep in 2019!
The Pullman ACMU 1100's classic !!
the days when the push pull cars were organized, ahhh
The current dual modes are P32AC-DM's not FL-9's.
9:54 that water on the track
that M1 looks nice, and that 2-tone MTA logo is awesome.

ACMU, the 1100 series

Metro North never used P42s.
you have a fantastic video- i was looking a long time for something like this
Um...FL9's haven't seen revenue service in 4 years.
8:22 AHHHHH good old M3A with the Leslie RS2M horn also used on the M7A

The Leslie RS2M. They also put it on cab cars, M7As, and M8s
What are all these trains in this video
Why do they have to blow they're horns when they enter this station?
So people stand back on the platform. They still do it now.
I wish they had those m3's for sale in ho scale.
What happened to track 3?
June 1998 wow I was just finishing the 5th grade :)
wow so 125th used to be a 3 track station.
Hey, were the cars on the train in the beginning of the video Cosmopolitans?
Yes I think they were M1A.
I think there is something different between 1998 and 2019.the train dosent have a Desail at all ! Did anyone notice ?
3:22 this horn sound like the one that’s used on some LIRR DE/DM30AC locomotives

Why are most of the trains skipping Harlem, when now adays they alll stop there
