The part about dangling the trailer harness out the tailgate is not a good idea at all for a number of reasons. You should be able to get access after removing the taillight and feed the harness down and out. Then strap it securely in place after covering it with some wire loom or other protection. That flat wire is not tough enough to withstand being bent by the door, and the general wear and tear of being exposed in the trunk and under the car.
