- Dark Times Collaboration - Turning Point Mix Contest 2021
This is my submission to the TURNING POINT mixing contest that has been announced by Warren Huart ( / warrenhuartrecording ) and Kristan Kohle ( / thesweetener .
Props to the original artists of DARK TIMES COLLABORATION and mixing/mastering engineer Kohle. Please make sure to check out the original: • Dark Times Collaborati...
Everybody, since we‘re not only contestants but also a community of mixing lovers, here‘s a rough overview of my approach and idea.
First of all, Undead On Steroids is a collaboration project, too. So I decided to invite even more awesome people to participate with me and add vocal dubs performed by my friend Steve ( / darkaz666 ) and an awesome guitar solo by my friend Micha from Zwietracht ( / zwietracht_ . I know Kohle wants to see a lot of reamping but since I don’t own a real tube amp, I decided to stick to my old trusty amp sims and find a few other ways to get creative with the song, as you can hear. My changes are not too dramatic, but I‘m sure you will notice them.
Drums: Yes, I enhanced all the shells, but just with the one-shots that were included in the tracks. The original snare is not exactly my cup of tea and I really had my struggles with it. But in the end I decided to not use another sample since the mix as a whole just worked for me.
Bass: I used the Mammoth VST by AuroraDSP but not with the Dängle preset. I like the dängle of the original mix very much but I didn’t want to copy things too exactly and found an even more distorted tone that suits the song well.
Guitars: The amp is Sigma (V1) by AudioAssault. I‘m not 100% sure but I think it models some Revv. It comes with a Zilla Cab IR that I instantly liked. Apart from that I have no information about the mic that was used for the IR. There‘s a bit chorus on the leads, the solo has its own recipe, the rest is straight forward.
Vocals: For the gang shouts on „the turning point is now (NOW)“ I mainly used Steve‘s takes, but also a bit of Ori and even myself. Steve is also dubbing the complete vocal track. The effect you hear in the before mentioned part in the main vocals is a reverse reverb. Thought it would be cool to try something less conventional than delay throws here.
OK. Still reading? Thanks! Now listen to my mix and give me a thumb up if you like it. 😉

Cool mix! Powerful vibe and great addings!
Thanks, man! I appreciate it.
Heeell Yeah ! Im publishing soon also ! Killer mix bro, i like it, sooo fat and nice, congrats !
Thank you! Looking forward to checking out yours!
Wow!, that bass!, really great mix!. Far better than mine anyways :P
Thank you so much! Yes, I am really happy with my bass tone but honestly, I don't think that makes my mix better than your's. After having finished the mix a couple of days ago now, I'm still not 100% certain wether I like the snare or not. I contrast to your snare that I immediately like when listen to your mix.
Excellent!
Thanks!
Very cool and powerful mix!, I like this :D
Hey man, good to hear that you liked it. Thanks!
Nice! I particularly like your vocal placements drums are nice too the "wall of sound" thing is always so hard to mix LOL
Thanks man! Means a lot.
Amazing mix man! This one is my favourite so far! Great to see you've taken the time to provide all the details in the description as well!
Thanks man! Also thanks for noticing the description, thought it might be of interest. Even took the time to write it down in two languages.
klingt doch fett! tight&powerful. nice work.
Vielen Dank. Das Lob kann ich für deinen Mix nur erwidern!
Great job on this one 2 good balance and great guitar tones kickin!
Thank you, did my best!
Good job, Man! I dig the added lead and powerful guitars!
Thank you! Most of the time, guitar tone is very difficult for me. This time I was easily satisfied.
@@undeadonsteroids.official Same here, Man! Heavy guitars are usually so tricky to mix. For me, I think quality DI’s made it easier in this case.
@@AdamMGuitar I was about to mention the same thing but it was hard to admit that my own DIs are not as good 😅
Nicely dense and punchy mix that nails the feeling of the song! Overall well balanced too but as a snare snob (without being a drummer) I think the snare would cut through better with a little bit more top end or some distortion purely on the hit above 1kHz. But I am reeeaaally sensitive to snare sounds to the point I can't listen to Ghost's Square Hammer because of this...thudploing. So take this with a bag of salt.
Hey thanks for checking out and for your feedback. I know, it all comes down to personal taste but I really appreciate your words.
I really had a hard time with the snare and I guess I could have tried even more things, but I really need to prevent my mixes from suffering from my „fuckarounditis“, if you know what I mean 😅
Niceeee

That’s great! Thank you so much!
