The mistake they made was that they built it expecting people to live in those apartment buildings instead of them being bought and left empty by rich folks wanting to hide their money here.
Most apartments in Docklands are occupied these days. It’s still quiet because it’s a residential area not a commercial area. People leave home for work or shop in the morning and only return in late afternoon or early evening. Population in Docklands shrinks to a third in the early afternoon. It’s literally a bedroom town.
There is no blow for us. I even think it’s a good thing because Costco brings too much outside traffic and pollution into Docklands. Most Docklands residents don’t even shop at Costco because we are usually small households and we eat out very often.
@@jayponetwothree7154 It’s not an investment for people who have been living here for a decade. Docklands has high turnover of tenants because young couples move on to raise kids in houses.
The problem with Docklands is that its too far to walk from the city center & not enough pulling power to bring people in. Why go to Docklands if you can do/get so many other things in the city center.
The bars and restaurants right opposite Marvel stadium are the place to be, during footy season. They are pumping and prime location. Don't know how they go, outside of footy season. Places like Platform 28, the Nixon etc.
Genuine question as someone who visited Melbourne and stayed in Dockland for a week: I thought there is a tram line that's free in the CBD and takes you closer to the city centre. Why would it be inconvenient for people to travel to and from Dockland?
@kingcoong yes, there's 5 trams servicing Docklands. The 75 and 30 go to Central Pier (just north west of Marvel Stadium) and the 35, 70 and 86 to the entrance to The District. All are free within Docklands and the city free tram zone.
@@fcfhkmelb I think it's more that Docklands was planned and expected to be something much much bigger, but they ultimately failed to bring people in from outside. As you said, it's not a bad residential area now and it seems like from the video that it's not really "dead", it just never lived up to the hype and expectations that the developers and investors hoped it could achieve. The Melbourne Eye closing down is one such example.
There's a huge lack of constant transport to the District Docklands. I remember going to Hoyts at the District Docklands because I personally prefer the Docklands Hoyts over Melbourne Central Hoyts, the transport is surprisingly limited. We only have trams that go from Flinders Street (70) or Southern Cross (86) to travel to the Docklands which is fine but when ever there are delays it's a huge issue, the busses that go toward the District are a far walk from Southern Cross. The bus stop doesn't even stop in front of the District and it takes around a 10 or so minute walk to arrive due to the amount of traffic lights you have to cross over. It's a shame because the District has a lot of good stuff to do and brilliant cuisine, it's just so inaccessible for some people. Plus, it's way too far to walk or bike ride to the Docklands.
Most residents leave home for work during the day so that’s why Docklands is do dead on weekdays. Please realise Docklands is just like any residential suburbs.
@@pavementpounder7502 All three places are not dead end suburbs but Docklands is. There is no adjacent suburbs to support Docklands. I feel like the people who live in Docklands don't want the area to become a popular shopping/activities area for the general public, they're pretty happy living in this nice quiet pocket really close to the CBD.
Exactly. People from the outside see Docklands as the extension of the CBD. No it’s not. It’s clearly planned as a residential area and most residents do not want excessive visitors.
You raised a very valid point; nobody mentioned this before. You can't compare it to the CBD. compare it to other Melbourne suburbs. It's definitely not "dead." There is just regular foot traffic, and most suburbs in Melbourne are quiet anyway.
I live in Yarraville 3013, I never go to Docklands. I rather go to Highpoint Shopping Centre Maribyrnong. When Costco moves to Ardeer, Docklands will be more dead. Docklands feels like an outdoor shopping centre.
There are plans for a second Metro Tunnel from Newport to Clifton Hill with a potential train station at Marvel Stadium (with a close walk to Southern Cross). Maybe this will improve accessibility to the area because it feels disconnected from the city despite it being so close. I guess that for people who live in the suburbs, if they're going for a day trip in the city they're not going to the go to the Docklands, they'll just go the the CBD. It doesn't offer anything different really.
