    I know for many the e39 is considered 'peak bmw' but i would have the e34 at the same level, this beautiful example in particular. The noise of the straight six is just sublime, please keep the videos coming they're a superb watch 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

      Thanks! I had a 528i E39 so I can compare, and I actually prefer the E34 classic style and the raw driving feeling. But the E39 it such a great car with a better handling and steering (rack and pinion). And the M52 2.8 is much more torquey, but also more refined with less sound (completely mute at idle, you don’t believe the engine is actually running!)

    It is great that you have kept it as original as possible without any changes in body style or engine modifications. These cars look best in their original form. This is a 1991 version so it must be the original Non-Vanos M50B25 (245 nm @ 4700 RPM). It is the simplest and most reliable M50 ever. According to German magazines of the early 1990s, 0-100 km/h in 8.3 s with 2 people onboard! 0-160 km/h around 21.0 s!!

    • @patrick7800
      @patrick7800  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed this is a M50 non vanos, very reliable. Only one single issue in 30 years with a faulty ignition coil. A very good engine despite a little lack of low end torque. I also drove an 2.5 M20, very nice sound, but the ~20less hp makes a big difference in acceleration.

    • @Messergebnis-liebhaber
      @Messergebnis-liebhaber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@patrick7800 Yes, M20B25 is also a great engine but it is better suited to E30 body. Your engine doesn't lack low RPM torque, it is the heavy E34 body that brings such a feeling below 3000 RPM. The same engine works wonders in an E36 body.

    • @patrick7800
      @patrick7800  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Messergebnis-liebhaber Very true. The E34 is an heavy car. And the M50 is such a beast under the hood of a 325i E36. 200kg less and maybe shorter gear ratios help a lot.

      Great to see longtime owners, still a M20 engine in 1990? The M20 sounds so nice.

    • @markmath2883
      @markmath2883 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@patrick7800 Yes, it’s the M20 engine. Though only 168 hp, it tops out at 135 mph, yet still gets decent gas mileage. I was always impressed by how solid the car feels, especially on the autobahn. At the 301,000 mile mark, my mechanic didn’t correct a periodic overheating issue resulting in a cracked head. Since I will install a turbocharger, I replaced the original engine with a rebuilt one. The door panels are trimmed in leather, $8,000 in suspension, drive train, clutch, ect; the car is just like new.

    A fantastic video and a fantastic car! I've commented before but we literally have the exact same E34, except mine is the M50 2.0 engine instead of your 2.5. Same colour, same spec! It's so great to see! Got another sub here :)

    • @patrick7800
      @patrick7800  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, the M50 is really a great engine, and I remember the 520i pulls well thanks to the shorter ratios. Yours is in great condition too?

    • @KnightHunterStudios
      @KnightHunterStudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@patrick7800 It definitely pulls, and you get the added benefit of good fuel economy as well. Mine is in great condition as well: 60,000 miles and hasn’t let me down once! Just finished a leather interior retrofit and it’s completely changed the car for the better.

    very nice and in the original condition! But why the engine nocks at motorway? At speeds that you drive it is usually completely noiseless. The same happend to my E30 and no mechanic has idea what cause it as all is new at the engine. Is this the model with catalyst and M50 engine?

    • @patrick7800
      @patrick7800  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks in fact there is a very little rattle sound on full load and it appears much more higher in the recording. This is a M50 catalyst without vanos. For your M20 do you hear the knock only on full load or after warm up? This could be a lot of things from the timing belt to the rod bearings and could need a complete engine rebuild in the worst case scenario. How many miles for your engine?

    • @samoime1955
      @samoime1955 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is the best engine M50, later are complicated by vanos and may be more costly for maintence. Mine is M40, it is more noisy at cold weather and less at summer. Timing belt and hydro lifters are new, the engine is completely rebuilt at 250000, now is about 320000 but the case is always the same. Just considered if it could be oil pressure, did you measure on yours? Only the valves are just cleaned and valve springs are not changed.

    • @patrick7800
      @patrick7800  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samoime1955Did you check the camshaft, or a loose or stripped plug, or maybe a faulty coil? But you would have a loss of power. For the oil pressure mine is ok i would not expect to make a specific noise. I never worked on a m40 I just know its a good and reliable little engine.. And very nice on a 318

    • @samoime1955
      @samoime1955 ปีที่แล้ว

      camshaft set, including rocker arms and lifters are new, the original BMW and it did not solve the case, my mechanic thinks that its all fine. But this is typical difference of old cars compared to new, that they use to be more noisy. Oil pressure may effect the work of hydro lifters. My mechanic says he does not even have the meter for it, as an oil pressure has never been an issue on BMWs. It has been added a catalyst so it works better at idle. It is not possible to set attachment here. But to notice, take a good check of the temperature as some later thermostat did not have a good flow so it was slightly overheating. BMW response was that it is within the tolerance. Are you the first owner of the car? It is very uncommon they are in so well condition, like new. It would just fit the original radio.

      @@samoime1955 I am the second owner, first owner was a very old man who had serious health issues a few years after buying the car back in 1991. It was stored in his garage and didnt run from early 2000s to my acquisition in 2016, with 53k km. I have a Kenwood stereo installed by the first owner, just purchased an original e34 business cassette. The car is in mint condition even the undercarriage perfectly clean and rust free.
