So, one quick tip. In order to get Cobalt you need to get Ardite. In order to get Ardite, you need to get Alumite. Alumite is a Pink alloy (which will match your house!!) made up of one block of obsidian, 5 ingots of Aluminum, and 2 ingots of iron. When you get Alumite, you'll be able to get Diamonds and Obsidian, so you can get rid of that diamond Pick.
You know I believe that there is an item in game that allows you to successfully change your name in chat to whatever you want. Using this you could kill two birds with one stone, name yourself observation boy, and then go invisible and wear goggles and maybe use one way glass on either Ssundee or Crainers. If there isn't an item you could just take a mob, name it observation bot, kill it then transform into it and it should say the name observation bot that is all.

I have a good troll, but it takes a while. Move things around in someone's house by a tiny bit. They'll feel something is different in their house, but they won't suspect anyone to just move something around. For instance you could move their crafting table one block. It will drive them insane looking back to see if it was always like this, but they'll think it's the same because thats how your mind works, but they'll always have that nagging felling in them that something's different.

I you should have put lines of Neatherack on the sides of the tower in a sort of, I guess you could say, "Veiny" pattern, you should have also made some cobwebs and put a chimney at the top of the tower with the cobwebs as smoke, just spewing from the tip. I think that would have made a much better impression on Ian to recognize your amazing craftsmanship.
