    My dad is a diamond grader, and though i usually don't hold as much value in owning diamonds, he has given me a pendant of a perfectly cut light brown diamond for my graduation from university. It means so much to me because he is such a geology nerd, and he has given me this super expensive piece of craftsmanship, to tell me he's very proud of me.

      You are a lucky girl. Your dad gave you a fabulous gift to treasure forever. I love colored diamonds. I sold diamonds for many years, and trained as a grader with my uncles. My fathers family was in the jewelry business in NYC.
      I have a lovely 1.22 yellow diamond, brilliant, VS1, ideal cut. It was in a ring, but I had it put in a pendant. It’s a beautiful warm lemon color.
      I’d love a blue diamond, but alas, priorities have changed.
      There’s nothing like a beautiful diamond to make you feel good.

      @@mchapman132 I saw an irradiated blue diamond the other day. It was so vibrant that it looked like a piece of navy blue Jolly Rancher hard candy. I usually don’t care much for diamonds, but that one I saw really caught my eye, I loved it. The GIA grades diamonds treated with radiation because it’s a permanent treatment. The cost of getting a natural blue diamond would be such that you’d need to be on the Forbes list to acquire one, not to mention that most naturally occurring blue diamonds are a pale sky blue, but treatments allow the average guy to scoop a vibrantly colored green or blue diamond up for a modest price. If I were to ever go out looking for a diamond I’d get an irradiated one all day long.

    Does GIA think that the Triple Ex grading is at risk of being devalued now that ASET scopes and similar light performance technology are becoming widespread knowledge? If people can use this technology to see poor performing Triple Ex diamonds does that damage the brand?

    • @niceratio1
      @niceratio1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They need to tighten the margins for their triple excellent grades. They allow crown angles of over 36 degrees to be considered Excellent lol. However, even tho they are non profit, this would cause too many diamonds to leave the excellent cut ranges and stirr the market. I guess its good for people who do their research properly. Not so much for those that just buy without educating themselves.

  • @r.trainer3706
    @r.trainer3706 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    truth be told, when you visit a retail jeweler you are paying for their profit and not the product. The product is worth ex: $600 but they sell it for $2500. De'beers has the monopoly with diamonds so they control everything in the market, from flow of availability to production. They are the crooks and EVERY diamond is going through them! At one time they were supporting the purchases of the Blood Diamonds many years ago.

    • @ThatsSomeGoodPizza
      @ThatsSomeGoodPizza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      DeBeers lost their monopoly and control over the market in the late 1990's. They currently represent around 35% of global diamond production. Alrosa out of Russia produces the most diamonds by volume, and there are nearly two dozen major players in the market now.

    • @ThatsSomeGoodPizza
      @ThatsSomeGoodPizza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Additionally, the vast majority of retail jewelers can not and do not make 300%+ on diamonds, especially in today's market... If anyone is making that sort of profit, it's the mining companies (who still need to spend hundreds of millions on locating sources and establishing mines). Retail jewelers are lucky to make 20-30% on a diamond in today's hypercompetitive market.

    Why in the year of 2018 when a lot of things are automated by machine learning, GIA still needs human gemologist to manually check the 4Cs? When I see the part where a person was manually drawing the inclusions on the form I think that isn’t that more efficient and accurate to let a machine do it?

    Don’t pay money for something that you’re going to loose money. You pay 10k for the diamond and the jewelers, pawnshops and hotel buyers will give you 1000 for it when you try to sell it. Diamonds are the worse investment. It’s the fastest way to loose money. Buy a moissanite nobody will know and you’ll save thousands.

      @@alicjaruiz1317 diamonds are a ripoff. I would never wear cubic zirconia tho. I would get Moissanite. Same qualities with more shine and it's rarer than diamonds. Diamonds are made up value by a monopolized company. They're one of the most common gems on earth but people still believe big businesses that constantly rip everyone off with extreme markups. It's not about being broke. Its about being smart. 24k gold, 999 silver, pure platinum, and moissanite gems are the only jewelry options anyone should be buying for rings or anything that has that "diamond jewelry" look
