  • ‘It was horrific then. It’s horrific to hear it now.’ - Ken Burns wants all of us to remember Donald Trump’s extreme response to the Central Park Five case.

In US news, Ken Burns sat down with NowThis News to talk about the Central Park 5 case and how Donald Trump reacted to it back in 1989. The Central Park 5 refers to Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Yuse Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Kevin Richardson who were convicted of raping and beating a Central Park jogger Trisha Meili. After the attack Donald Trump called for the death penalty to be used on the Central Park 5. The Central Park Five case was the subject of Sarah Burns' book, later a Ken Burns' documentary, and is now being turned into a Netflix series from Ava DuVernay called When They See Us. In a Trump interview at the time, Trump said he 'hates these people' and believed hate would help get things done.

Trump just repeated his con job on a national scale with the help of every news outlet. He made promises he had no intention of keeping, except for the ones that promote white supremacy and the promises to stick it to the liberals. Every single person who voted Trump with glee is a victim of a con man. Not a terribly good con man, but they didn't set the bar very high on believability, a lot of these people donate to televangelists.
Then Russian intelligence successfully convinced a ton of progressives that the DNC and Clinton cheated to win the nomination, even though the numbers were not in Sanders' favor. I'd say this is a distant second place reason, but it was enough to drive a lot of voters to Stein or even Trump in swing states. Yes, Clinton wasn't that strong a candidate, but those who studied fascism knew in 2016 that Trump would be infinitely worse. But her emails. F*ck those emails.

If your vote actually meant something, Trump wouldn't be president. If the number of votes determined who won, Clinton would be president. And that's not saying Clinton would've been any better or worse.
American politics, elections, at that level, are decided behind closed doors. Think about 2016. Clinton cheated Sanders, recieved more votes, yet still lost...to a reality tv show host. Does that sound like your vote meant anything? And nothing happened to those who cheated, the DNC, etc.
It's all political theatre...the illusion of a choice.
Trump being president was set in motion decades ago. Im sure if you look, there's clips of Trump being asked if he would ever run for president. Never Congress, the Senate, Mayor of NY, it was always asked about becoming president. I maybe wrong, but has anyone with absolutely no history in politics ever ran for president and won?
Coincidence, maybe, but an entity that bailed out Trump financially in the 90's, not because he was a great businessman, but because Trump could capture a crowd, is also a behind the scenes donor in American politics. I doubt appointing Wibur Ross as Commerce Secretary paid off that debt completely.

I am personally against the death penalty, but even I can understand why it may be necessary. Some actions are just too inhuman to be allowed to continue. An unborn human child has not yet comitted any animalistic crimes, therefore killing it is unfair and an act of evil; meanwhile, killing a man who raped and murdered women and children just to get a kick off it could arguably be seen as putting down a rabid dog. Again, I am personally against the death penalty, God clearly says in the Bible that “thou shall not kill" (though it does say there is a time for killing too, but thats besides the point) and even without it, I think the risk of hangin an innocent are too great, but dont compare babies who have not hurt anybody to serial rapists who are less man than beast.

I have never met Donald Trump, and probably never will, but I have known him all my life. He was always part of the media landscape: the billionaire playboy, the scandals, Marla Maples, the bankruptcy, the comic grandiosity, the glamour - but ultimately, he seemed trivial. A rich man enjoying his riches. He didn’t have anything to do with me, or with the problems facing the nation and the free world that I was concerned about. But now, he is President of the United States, and the subject of a relentless vilification campaign from the Left, and the exponent of policies that the nation must adopt if it is simply to survive, and it is useful to step back and reflect on why Donald Trump has chosen this path.
In a wide-ranging 2004 interview with Playboy Magazine, Trump demonstrates that his thinking has evolved a great deal since then: he calls John Kerry “a great guy…a very smart guy…highly underestimated.” But he also manifests the perceptiveness and acumen that has taken him this far, and that his detractors have never acknowledged. Of Iraq he says: “No way will there be a normal democratic government in that country, in my opinion. The same with Afghanistan. If anybody thinks Afghanistan will become a normal, wonderful democratic country where everybody walks in on a Tuesday and votes, it’s not going to happen.”
Indeed. And when asked if he thinks that Trump Tower and the other buildings that bear his name will still bear that name in 100 years, he answers: “No, I don’t think so…I don’t think any building will be here-and unless we have some very smart people ruling it, the world will not be the same place in a hundred years. The weapons are too powerful, too strong. Access to the weapons is getting too easy, so I think the landscape we’re looking at will not be the same unless we get smart people in office quickly….I know life is fragile, and if the world looks like this a hundred years from now, we’ll either be very lucky or have found unbelievably good leaders somewhere down the line.”
Finding “unbelievably good leaders” has been a preoccupation of Donald Trump for far longer than that. In a 1990 Playboy interview, he says: “I like George Bush very much and support him and always will. But I disagree with him when he talks of a kinder, gentler America. I think if this country gets any kinder or gentler, it’s literally going to cease to exist.” George H. W. Bush was not an “unbelievably good leader” by anyone’s standard, and even then Trump was being asked what he would do if he were President of the United States. After delineating some of the things he would do as President, Trump is asked: “Wait. If you believe that the public shares these views, and that you could do the job, why not consider running for President?” He answers: “I’d do the job as well as or better than anyone else. It’s my hope that George Bush can do a great job.”
The interviewer persists: “You categorically don’t want to be President?” Trump answers: “I don’t want to be President. I’m one hundred percent sure. I’d change my mind only if I saw this country continue to go down the tubes.”
And here we are. Twenty-seven years later, the country has continued to go down the tubes, and Donald Trump is President of the United States. He didn’t have to do this. He is 70 years old, he is extraordinarily rich, and he could have lived a comfortable old age, hosting The Apprentice and enjoying the fruits of his labors at Mar-a-Lago. Instead, he has entered the political arena and become the object of the Left’s hatred and vilification on a scale that is shocking and unprecedented. I remember, even when I was a young Leftist in the early 1980s, being shocked at the vitriol that my comrades directed at Ronald Reagan. I didn’t like the man at the time, and I opposed his policies, but I didn’t have the vicious hatred for him that so many others did.
Yet that hatred was a mailed valentine compared to the frenzied rage that the Left is now directing toward Donald Trump. They vilify him, they vilify his wife and son, they fantasize about assassinating him, and maybe they eventually will - and why? Because he “saw this country continue to go down the tubes,” and determined to give up his life of comfort and ease and do something to turn this nation around. Donald Trump has proven himself to be, above all things, a patriot, a man who loves this nation enough to sacrifice himself for it, just as a soldier gives his life for the nation so that our children, and our children’s children, can live free.
He is the unlikeliest of men to have chosen to do this. But he has done it. And now he is suffering the relentless slings and arrows of the anti-American Leftists who are determined to destroy him for doing it. Any remaining patriots, whatever they think of the President of the United States, should recognize that this is happening, and understand that they owe a debt of gratitude to Donald Trump for being willing to make this sacrifice. He didn’t have to do it. He could have enjoyed a comfortable old age while America went down the tubes. Most of his former colleagues and associates are doing just that, while he struggles in Washington to turn things around, against an entrenched Leftist establishment that determined not to relinquish power.
But now America has a shot at survival as a free nation, and it is due in large part to Donald Trump. Few of us can say we have made a comparable sacrifice.

No one knew any different. No one really knew that they didn't commit the crime. Trump was only saying that to the person who committed crimes like this, should receive the death penalty. @@Alic4444 I have never met Donald Trump, and probably never will, but I have known him all my life.

@@russiangravy3870 whether they were convicted or not, later on when they were found innocent he should've came forward and apologized. That would've been the classy thing to do. He couldn't do it. He couldn't put his ego aside and admit that he made a mistake and that he was wrong. I mean have you ever really heard Trump ever own up to anything?!! He never seems to admit any fault or wrongdoing in anything!! At least from what I've seen of him. If you can prove me wrong I would love to see the proof.

    • @newperve
      @newperve 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@BALD CAT Someone is calling for Trump to be being or for being a racist when that means voting in an actual racist. So yeah comparisons are valid. The Central Park 5 had not get been convicted, true, but he didn't mention them did he? And again the evidence that Trump is a racist consists of one quote about blacks being lazy. Not violent mind you, but lazy.
As for being a bully, who see the FBI on his political opponents? Ego lure and withheld evidence to convict a man of lying when her didn't? Won went on the news android years and made accusations they later testified they had no evidence for? Trump"s opponents. And no that's not a conspiracy theory, every one of those is a matter of public record. Trump kids being bullied, not being the bully.

Have these five exonerated men been interviewed on a high profile news program? If they are willing then it would be an important reminder to the public about who Trump really is. Also, they could explain to Trump what the words 'exonerated' and 'falsely accused' mean, since Trump clearly doesn't know.
