John, you are an inspiration. Improvement is hard, but every time I doubt myself, I come watch your videos, and I remember that I, too, can have a flawless beard someday if I just put in the work.
I've just seen one or two of your videos in this series lately, but I remember years ago you saying 3-minute was such a hard time control for you -- not quite like 5-minute, not quite like 1-minute -- and you'd always get into time trouble. Awesome to see you keeping your opponents on their toes time-wise these days!
Happy New Year Everyone! John, we miss you posting more often on TH-cam (ideally a video each week). I know that you are more active on Twitch lately. If you could at least post here what you record on Twitch that would be helpful too. I really like your content and appreciate you as an individual, you're a great one! (I'm sure I'm not the only one believing this) :) All the best and Happy New Year!
John I’d love to watch any twitch streams on TH-cam. I know you are throwing down some educational content there I just can’t always catch! Thanks for the video!!
OLD SCHOOL QUESTION, John, I love watching your games and hoping you can look back and tell us the mistakes you made along your journey so we don't repeat them. For instance, what would you do differently for a faster progression? I mean for overall game and not speed.Thank you!!!
Thank you! And tough for me to say personally since I was a kid when I improved the most at chess, but I'd say mainly sticking to longer time controls and limiting blitz/bullet is the way to go (especially if you're an adult).
No way! A new video! All jokes aside, love your content and hope you're doing well. You've been a massive inspiration to me ever since and I've gone from being a beginner to 2500 online and sub-expert/former expert otb. Much love.
PS: Just saw you talk about the scandi course being the reason for the inactivity on youtube. All the best there and you deserve everything good! You are an incredibly hard worker ;)
Fantastic to hear about your journey - WOW, that's quite the improvement arc! And thank you very much. Still wrapping up the Scandi course, but I'm happy to report that it's turning out extremely well. Really appreciate your support - cheers.
Appreciate you bearing with my upload schedule, Justin! Hope to get back on track on TH-cam in the near future with my Scandi course nearing completion. Cheers!
Hi John, you missed a beautiful rook sac at 20:49 (although it's not the only winning move) 17... Rh1+, making way for Qh8+ It's not forced mate (only -2.4) and actually looks really difficult to win as a human, so I don't blame you at all😅
Thanks for watching! I almost plays 2.exd5, and if 2...Qxd5, I like following up with the underrated 3.Nf3, preparing d2-d4 and c2-c4. A lot of players play 3.Nc3 instinctively, but 3.Nf3 leaves open the c-pawn push option, which can be nice.
@@JohnBartholomewChess That's what I play! I don't have a lot of theoretical knowledge but I tend to get great positions. What do you play against that?
John why don't you upload your twitch streams and lichess tournaments on youtube? is it technically difficult? There's no harm in having your content on both platforms I guess?
I might do this some day - it's easy to do. I generally like separating my TH-cam and Twitch content, but I'll do this if enough people have an interest in watching the streams on TH-cam.
In Nimzo Indian Defense/Queen's Indian Defense the move d5 by Black feels to me like a space taking and square controlling move rather than a break move (Dan Heisman's vocabulary). What is your opinion on this?
That's probably a good way to describe the d-pawn push. It does create tension with White's c-pawn, but it's mostly played to establish pawn control in the center.
Hello, sir! I've been doing very well - thanks. I'm spending most all of my spare time on finishing my Scandinavian course, which I'm pleased to say is close to completion. Hope you're doing well, too. Thanks for watching, as always!
John?!? Were you a guest on a Podcast recently, the host they were a former reality tv star? Been watching you forever so i will not tell anyone if you were.
@@JohnBartholomewChess my heartdropped when first listend to it and i could have sworn it was you. so it was Nick Viall - Ask Nick episode826 on youtube at minute 48:50. the guy who called sounded so much like you and was also called john haha

Finally!! I started watching 5 years old using the clock as a weapon videos.. Missed you John❤
Love it. Thanks for watching all these years!
Aw the simpler times watching you in 2017 ❤ Thanks for the throwback
Appreciate you being a long-time viewer!
Hello John, this is guys
John, never stop these videos please! Thank you

This made my day; Glad to see your video pop up my friend! Cheers from Norway
CHEERS, Andreas!!
Hope you're doing well, my friend. I think it's time we bumped into each other again! :)
Good to see you, John. Since I starting learning chess (from you, originally) your playing style has really changed! So much more dynamic!
That's awesome - pleased to see you sticking with chess!!
I thought the same now watching this video! A fishing pole attack.. from John?!
Wow, those games are complicated! The Scandi gifting us with some really creative positions!! Thanks, John!!
Thanks so much!! I've been having a lot of fun with the Fishing Pole-style attacks lately :)
John been watching these since the days of old it's been a looong journey man
Yes it has! And more to come! Thanks for your continued support.
GG's John. Great stuff as always! those last couple time scrambles were intense.
Cheers, west!
Love watching your content John, looking forward to seeing some more regular TH-cam releases!
Thanks so much! 😊
I learn so much from these videos. Ty for all you do for the chess community! 🎉🎉
Love to hear that. Cheers, and best wishes for your chess improvement!
Good to see you back!
You make chess look so simple
Thanks 🙏 for doing so

Thanks, Stanley! Here's my Twitch video archive if you want to catch up on anything: www.twitch.tv/johnbartholomew/videos
WE ARE SO BACK. using the clock as a weapon lfg🗣😭🙏
It’s incredible that John can contain himself after ending up flagged in a close time scramble, if it was me I’d slam my desk lol
😅
Great games, and really looking forward to the Scandi course!
Appreciate the support, thanks for watching!
Thanks for the vid and good luck getting your course all done
Appreciate you, thanks for watching!
The Scandi Sensei himself! John Bartholomew is the man😎👍

Looking forward to it! Cheers!
Man, John playing. Cool.
He probably has experience using the king as a weapon, particularly the one behind him since it looks like it has some heft to it.
Good observation - it does have some heft to it 😁
Damn, guess I’m old school. I know you mentioned twitch but TH-cam is how I found you and been subscribed since 2015ish.
Love it
Nice Scandinavian again. Would you say that the Scandinavian course would be out before Christmas?
Thank you!
Current projection for release in first or second week of January. Appreciate your interest!
Backstreet's back, ALLRIGHT!
Hi John, you missed a beautiful rook sac at 20:49 (although it's not the only winning move)
17... Rh1+, making way for Qh8+
It's not forced mate (only -2.4) and actually looks really difficult to win as a human, so I don't blame you at all😅
Sick idea! Yup, that definitely wasn't on my radar :) In my upcoming course there are some cool geometrical h-file attacks like that - well-spotted!
Welcome back, John!
Thank you, sir!
Hilarity follows, the mate that wasn't there - fun!
;-)
Thanks, Tom!
thanks for visiting your old home john!!!
Appreciate you being here, Basidh! 😄
Can't blame you for missing that m1. Especially when you think you just made a blunder.
Thanks! Yup, I didn't even realize it until I scrolled through the games after my session. That guy was amazingly fast in that scramble
I haven't been recommended your channel for ages
Appreciate you still being around!
Welcome back , John. Again: the layout with all the pawns in the upper left corner is confusing
He returns!
Your vids are so much better and more instructive than Levi Rozman and yet he gets all the spoils. Unfair
Wow! I had to click this video because of the thumbnail with an old BHB!
Haha it was fun to do a photo shoot with one of those old clocks! :)
I don't play the Scandi but I would be very curious to know what you suggest against the line I play against it as white.. great video John!
Thanks for watching!

@@JohnBartholomewChess That's what I play! I don't have a lot of theoretical knowledge but I tend to get great positions.
What do you play against that?
John and missing backward knight moves😱
🤝
Where was the missed mate?
22:33 🫣 Happened in the blink of an eye!
Specifically after Kf3, it’s Nd4#
John why don't you upload your twitch streams and lichess tournaments on youtube? is it technically difficult? There's no harm in having your content on both platforms I guess?
I think it is fairly easy to do, Twitch lets you export VODs directly to TH-cam. A second channel for those would be really nice
I might do this some day - it's easy to do. I generally like separating my TH-cam and Twitch content, but I'll do this if enough people have an interest in watching the streams on TH-cam.
@@dejan17464I second this emotion.
when will the course be released?
Before the end of the year, I hope!
Some people might take using the clock as a weapon a bit to literal in OTB games
Lets go!
After Ne4 - Better was Rf4
In Nimzo Indian Defense/Queen's Indian Defense the move d5 by Black feels to me like a space taking and square controlling move rather than a break move (Dan Heisman's vocabulary). What is your opinion on this?
That's probably a good way to describe the d-pawn push. It does create tension with White's c-pawn, but it's mostly played to establish pawn control in the center.
@JohnBartholomewChess that means the c5 push is the actual pawn break which fights for the centre space than d5 my interpretation was correct.
1:38 Any particular reason why Rf4 would not have been good here?
Nice, Rf4 looks like a good move. I didn't consider it
@@JohnBartholomewChess Go me!
Nice! :D
Thanks for watching, Binny! :)
Hi John how are you doing Brother ... I missed watching

Also, youre “oh no!” Is not an Eric Rosen “oh no” lol. You mean your oh nos haha
Haha, you're right. I need to work on my "Oh no!" delivery. 😂
Twitch hurts my eyes and soul. I prefer TH-cam for now. At least while the ad blockers still work.

@@oskar-jy5tm Ok I just looked it up - that's kinda funny 😂
Winning by a full minute in the first game, now that's using the clock as a weapon!
I need to do that every time! :)
Good to see you, John. Since I starting learning chess (from you, originally) your playing style has really changed! So much more dynamic!
Appreciate that! I’ve been trying to get better at finding those dynamic attacks.
