There are few series I find more appealing yet unfathomable than Ecco. Of you enjoyed this video please consider liking and subscribing to the channel for more retrospectives
This game has never left my brain. Its story is so strange and the vibes of the game are very depressing and somber, yet i cant look away. The challenge is unfair and absurd but I still want to beat this without cheat someday. I want a 2 hour video essay of this game and how it was made so bad!
Thanks for watching and commenting. It really is unique, and I've been searching for more games that scratch the itch this game provides. Subnautica is close but its not quite there.
It wasn't a sequel, at the end of Tides of Time Ecco goes into the time machine and we never found out what they were gonna do for the 3rd game unfortunately. This one was a reboot, I remember really liking it on Dreamcast. Great game
I love this game so much. It was crazy figuring out how to progress, but I did it all without a guide. I am SO glad it got ported to PS2, because that's the one I got. I'm sad this game is mostly forgotten. I know it's not for everyone, but what an experience.
It took me a couple years to complete. All without a guide or internet, except the very last Foe Boss. I wish could go back and beat it completely without aid. I just lost my patience at the very end.
It’s time. Sega has dipped their toes back into old franchises and are working on wonderful new games from those catalogs. NOW is the time to strike and bring back Ecco the Dolphin. New controls, new mechanics, new abilities all in a gorgeous, modern, immersive 2.5D world with orchestral/live instrument atmospheric music and sound that rivals the top Metroidvania & adventure games of today. Oh yeah….and an absolutely insane story that starts off grounded and just goes off the rails by the end of it all. Basically…..reboot the franchise and remake the first game just polish it up to 💯
Yes, a metroidvania-like design that connects all levels is what an Ecco game needs. You will need to unlock new powers to access new areas. Regarding the story, given that Ecco messes with time travel, the story can be written to serve both as a reboot and sequel. You can be an Ecco from al alternative timeline that receives messages from Sega-Genesis ecco from the tides of time, for example. That would be a fresh experience for old and new fans.
As someone with a HUGE fear of underwater, the entirety of this game has always looked absolutely horrifying to me, and both the outdated graphics as well as the fact that next to nobody even knows this game exists all just made it even creepier Needless to say, despite likely never playing it, I absolutely adore this game based on its level of terror that feels specifically crafted for me
I'm going to share a comment I made on another video about this, as someone who has only dabbled in Ecco but is intrigued by the concept: I think Ecco The Dolphin is one of those games/franchises that maybe needs to be realized in another medium. I mean, since the gameplay drives people away, but the story is surprisingly intriguing, then it should be a set of movies or a tv series like Netflix's Arcane. A very New Age sounding video game about sentient dolphins, crystals, and fighting off lovecraftian, HR Giger Esque, psychic alien invaders, crystals, saving the world....and crystals would definitely have an audience. I bet Ralph Smart would do a video about it, deep diving once again. The Cat down the road would watch it. Sure, he's against video games in general, but his intro looks like a video game in half his videos, and if you turned this lovecraftian survival horror game disguised as a kid friendly metroidvania from sea world into a TV series, you might have something.
I just want to say this was an absolutely amazing video. This was a game I picked up in the early 2000’s as a kid and without the internet or guides this was pretty difficult for my 8 year old brain to figure out. I never got to finish the game and It left such a profound impact on me I knew one day I would return to complete it. It wasn’t easy but it certainly was rewarding. Going back and playing it as an adult made me realize how trippy and wild this game is but I love it all the more for it. To think that a fantastic underwater Dolphin simulator would also be a sci-fi, psychedelic, survival horror, puzzle adventure game is just so creative and mind blowing when you look back on it. The music, controls, details, atmosphere, and everything about this game is a memorable piece of art. You simply do not get games like this anymore.
Brilliant video!! I'm a huge fan of the Ecco series and I remember marveling at both the classic games and DotF as a kid, even though I got ro them long after they'd released. Conceptually, sonically, amd aesthetically I am fascinated with them, but I agree they never really got the gameplay just right ... other than a few of DotF's more open areas. Videos like this make me very happy, love all the history and background you go into!
Still love this game! Getting through the difficulty curb is absolutely worth it! This game has such an ambience about it. Wether it's in the big blue ocean, crystal laced caves, a machine, the twisted dolphin lair, and of course, the hanging waters!
That level is amazing. One of the few direct callbacks to the 16 bit games that just works far better in 3D than 2D. Yeah, I'd love a port or sequel, it wouldn't need much improvement to be mesmerising.
Never knew the Pink Floyd influence in the music. Guess its not a coincidence DotF was my favorite game as a kid and PF is now one for my favorite bands. Glad this game is still being talked about (though rarely).
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future is a game that if you plan to beat it, do it from start to finish. Don't take a long break from it and come back expecting your muscle memory to kick in. It won't. You'll have to relearn the controls, which means you'll need to restart the game in order to have the lower stress early areas to do it in. Even then you'll need to further practice the relearned controls to be up to snuff where you're at, so you'll need to just progress normally to where you left off to get that practice. It's a good game, but you can't let yourself get distracted by the next big game while you're still playing it.
I always thought the premise behind Ecco the Dolphin was intriguing. I had the first game on the Genesis, but never beat it legitimately. Used the password system to play the final level and boss…that final boss is nightmare-fuel for sure! This Dreamcast version always looked cool but I never got around to trying it. I’m going to have to try to get a copy on either the Dreamcast or PS2 to try it out. Great video man!
The last levels of the original game are more than just nightmare fuel - they may be legitimately the hardest thing I have ever beaten in gaming. Thanks for watching, and good luck if you do get a copy of this
Thank you for making this. Ive been a fan of ecco since the genesis game. These games helped define my childhood and teen years. I just hope one day we get another game, or at least a modern port of this game. I wont hold my breath though.
When I was a young lad, a friend (not you) let me borrow their Genesis. He had Ecco the Dolphin on it and I never understand how to get past the first few areas. I have to be honest, I had no idea there was a dreamcast version of Ecco. The plot in this series is absolutely wild.
Great to see there was another Ecco game released, though it's a shame it retained the confusing difficulty from the predecessors. I've always had a soft spot for Ecco the Dolphin, but could never figure out what you're supposed to actually do in the game! At least I know now it was designed to be challenging and it's not just a 'me' problem 😀
The Dreamcast release of this game was loaded with bugs and had no sense of direction. The PlayStation 2 release fixed almost all the bugs, had a better map, and solved the lack of direction with the L3 button that pointed Ecco’s nose to the next objective (this also worked like z-targeting during boss fights and follow objectives.) I rated the Dreamcast version a 4 out of 10, but I rate the PS2 version a 10 out of 10. It really is the perfect 3D Ecco game I always wanted since playing the original masterpieces on Sega CD.
Thanks for the comment, I knew there were some upgrades in the PS2 but I didn't realise the control upgrade was implemented- that definitely would have helped. Thanks for watching and commenting
@@AFriendRemembers yes, the Dreamcast version is a beautiful, but broken game. And the ps2 version fixes just about every problem, especially with the L3 button. I feel like the DC version was rushed, and the ps2 version felt like a necessary patch to run things right.
If you want other mega drive and n64 games the subscription is qorth checking out but too deer for my tastes when I already know most titles I want in one form or another already. Am waiting to see how it shapes up in a few months with more rollout
Thats this game (Defenders of the Future). There are 2 hidden 'retro' or 'classic' 2D levels hidden through the game which are a great throwback to the original Ecco games. Shame they are so short - I would have happily played more
Good lord, even just looking at this gameplay makes me nervous. Something about videogame deep sea diving just terrifies me. Real life diving is fine, but ever since the PSX game Treasures of the Deep utterly broke kid me with its giant eel jumpscare, diving in videogames has become unbearable for me. The game does sound cool though!
I have no doubt this is a good game but I have one huge problem with it. The critics are unanimously excellent. Dreamcast Ecco scored around 85 percent on Metacritic. You showed the effort the new team have put in to quality. Visually and sonicly, they rendered the ocean with great details. It looks very good on the Dreamcast. The dolphin controls rather well. You can go in all directions rather smoothly. Easy to control would be a step too far, but it is manageable and quite intuitive. The challenges make sense. We are 100% in the same Ecco The Dolphin we've known for years... And that's my problem with it. Yes, Ecco is iconic. It was not made by Sega but it is strongly connected with Sega because the first installment was a huge hit on the Mega Drive. The CD version brought so much in the sound department OK. There is zero doubt Ecco Defenders of the Future will land on the Dreamcast Mini should there ever be one. Novateam Apaloose whatever their name deserve this spot as much as Gamearts as a reward for their great work and enduring collaboration with Sega. Gamearts, the makers of Lunar Eternal Blue and Silpheed, also deserve their spot on the Mini because Grandia II is a fantastic gorgeous well-thought adventure game, one of the very best behind Skies of Arcadia (and Shenmue). So... Are we going to put Ecco Defenders of the Future on the same pedestal as Grandia II ? Lol. No way in hell. Out of 5 stars, personally, I only give it 3 stars. So far I've given nothing but praises on this game, although I hate it. It's a frustration box. We're left in the dark. What shall I do next? I end up looking up everything on the Internet. You said why the difficulty level was high. Phantasy Star had a crazy difficulty level in episode 1 and 2 but when the 4th came out, they adapted with more rewards and less going round in circles, especially in the beginning of the adventure. Does Ecco fit in the Survival Horror genre? I am afraid not because there is no suspense in Ecco. We are left to bathe in a sweet innocent boring world. That convoluted sci-fi scenario you summed up very well... Nobody gives a damn about it, I'm sorry to say. Luc Besson did his best film with Dolphins, the Big Blue, it was awesome. It involved real humans, including Rosanna Arquette, and zero aliens. The whole sci-fi premises ruins the dolphin game. I am sorry, an adventure game where the adventure is ruined isn't an adventure game. Then what is it? It's not a survival horror (no tension, zero atmosphere), not an adventure game (botched sci-fi scenario no-one wants to hear), so Ecco Defenders of the Future falls into the first person shooter category with an exploration element, same genre as Quake III Arena and Out-Trigger. Now we've established where Ecco belongs, we can start rating Ecco for it true mediocre value. That granted spot on the Dreamcast Mini (they will have it, as sure as the Academy Awards reward Miramax) I would rather give it to the bad Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (not talking Code Veronica) than the good Ecco The Dolphin, on the only criteria that should matter : ENTERTAINMENT.
This game has had a grip on me since I first got it as a kid, I couldn’t get past the first shark boss back then, but would often play it to swim around. Committing to complete it as an adult, I was shocked by its depth, environments, story and horrific difficulty, but I feel profoundly proud to have beaten it last year :) Seeing everyone else’s love of this game in the comments makes me so happy 🩵
