we drove the Donner pass in the 50's prior to the new freeway- one lane each direction (one road) and a winding twisting steep climb from Donner to the summit. it was quite a different ride after the freeway, if memory serves- the trip from Donner to the summit was about 2 hours? we were in a '48 Chrysler sedan, those who never drove the old road don't know what they missed and should be thankful to have missed it. corners so sharp you could see your own tailights still coming around the corner you just negotiated, OK, that might be a stretch. I'd love to be able to take the early ride one more time.
Raymond Bermudez My first time driving over the summit in a snow storm 🌨 was last year it was actually the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. A nice little system came through that area for a couple days the snow did start sticking on the ground near and going over the summit. Wasn’t enough for chains but my car was giving a warning that it could spin if I wasn’t careful. I wasn’t in a semi truck I was driving my Honda Accord with my wife and 2 year old son in the car. I just kept it slow shifted into 2 gear and made sure to keep both hands on the wheel and not press the brake to hard while going over the summit and defending east towards Donner lake and Truckee:
Nice video, Kyle! I plan to hopefully go out to the Sierra Nevada someday and drive this route. I live in Colorado so we got some beautiful mountains there too. I also wanted to thank you for turning me on to Al Stewart and his song "Time Passages." I actually decided to look up the song for myself and now cannot stop listening to it. I live in SC and we have been out there on vacation 4 or 5 times. My oldest daughter talks about going back all the time. Beautiful country. I enjoyed watching this video. Guess it’ll have to do till I can afford another trip.

I sure don't miss the Truckee inspection station (westbound). If any truck had even a bit of road grime on it, they'd make us stop and they'd perform a full inspection. Trucking... Sure glad I finally got out of that business! Anyway, great video! I'll bet Donner is FUN in a car! 😀
Ran 80 end to end in the mid 80's. All trucks had to stop in Truckee adjust brakes before proceeding west. Drove a 359 Pete " Large car" then. Made sure their was no oil leaks or oil on the tanks when I left Nyc loaded for the west coast.
Great video. I been planning a trip to lake Tahoe and seeing your videos have been so helpful. Just a quick question, between Donner Summit, Tejon Pass and The Grapevine which one would you consider having the greatest steepens going up and downhill?
I hope you didn't have to resort to Cannibalism for this drive. Be sure to pack lots of extra sandwiches and treats in a cooler for your car during these trips, I always do :-D. Another good video Kyle.
Ok, I like your videos; this one I drove every day for a couple years, had a cabin in Blue Canyon. However, the music consistently sucks, it's either quasi-disco or it's some angst-ridden creep warbling about something you can't decipher. Little Fluffy Clouds by the Orb would be better, OR, just ditch the music altogether for the next videos.

I drive a tractor trailer and drive through here quite often and I find the drive very enjoyable unless it’s raining or snowing 🌨 great stuff
