- Singapore's Prime Minister-designate Lawrence Wong has announced that Minister Gan Kim Yong will be promoted to Deputy Prime Minister in his new Cabinet. Mr Wong made the announcement at the news conference at the Istana on Monday (May 13). Mr Wong will continue as Finance Minister and DPM Heng Swee Keat will retain his position. The next thing to look forward to is GE. PAP needs to refresh its rank asap as they lost quite a number of office holders due to various reasons since last GE. Plus some existing ministers are already in their mid 60s and hence do not have much runway left.

One way or another, the Cabinet works as a team. This is PAP's style. There may be a reshuffling once in a while, but work gets done in the end.
As long as PAP has supermajority and LHL is SG of PAP party, women, non-Chinese, and young people will forever be marginalized. These groups will never have a chance to get a seat at top of government. Marginalized groups must never trust PAP. Marginalized groups must never vote PAP. Vote change. Vote opposition.

If GKY has been picked as DPM bec he was LW's mentor previously, then I think it is a step backward. I firmly believe there are better candidates than GKY.

By promoting GKY and keeping HSK, it signals dominance of 3G team, lack of confidence in 4G team, power struggles, and distrust within the PAP. Singaporeans must know that this is not about continuity of government, but hold on power by LHL and his 3G team. LW is just another tool. In exchange to become the next PM, LW will promise to keep 3G team in charge. LW is also making use of this opportunity to sideline his fiercest competitors, CCS and OYK. Do not trust PAP. Do not vote PAP. Make LW a one term PM.

What has GKY done right after so many years as Minister? Both him n LW failed miserably as covid task force lead. covid case arrived in Singapore few days b4 Chinese New Year 2019. Under both GKY n LW watchful eyes, covid infected number raised from 1 case to few hundreds thousands cases over a period of 3 years. Covid eventually died on its own after mutations weaken it. What has both of them contribute?

This is just my take on why LW is keeping the cabinet in tact at the moment. As a newly appointed leader, he needs stability in the team. If he reshuffle between now and next GE, if PAP loses more votes, he will lose his influential power. On the other hand, if he wins with a strong mandate, he will do a major reshuffle and brings in younger ministers so that they have the next 5 years to prove themselves.

Man, i gotta say, what started out as a fortuitous comment I posted turned out to be quite an eye-opener about singapore society; tat its at best a dystopia whose final chapters are being written as we speak. Judging by the visceral reactions to my previous comment-n reply (admittedly, all quite critical of this govt)-there is even less doubt in my mind now tat the govt derives its mandate to rule (as all mediocre govts do) from a very contrived narrative of past successes. In singapores case, this is underpinned by two tropes primarily: 1) singapore did not juz succed, bt tat it has done so exceptionally (its da whole of idea of coming to uber prosperity from absolutely nothing. N 2) its all due to the govts superlative wisdom. Bt its fairly easy to repudiate both if one is to use common sense. First of all, there were a few other comparable countries in da 60s (ie relatively small countries with limited resources).. think war-torn japan tat had to import everything which became world #2 economy. Think the microchip powerhouse tat is taiwan today n where they came from. Watever “success” singapore had hitherto is not really all tat exceptional n it was had in spite of the govt. i fear, however, tat LW will make its failure truly exceptional in world history.
This is a good example of good government official for the world: especially for America
