      i have a XL and i have cooked steak pies in it, took about 20 mins to cook. Suet with steak or golden syrup cooks great too. Also I was cooking on a Jetboil outside in Cornwall

    I just bought 2 ridgemonkeys, I got the standard sandwich toaster and the xl. I had not actually seen one before I purchased and the standard one is very small the xl being more versatile. But as I bought them for motorcycle camping the size and light weight and shape are ideal. Ps great review on the XXL.

    Looks great. I love my XL but there are four of us so getting a bit small. Have you ever tried making calzone in it? We make those instead of pizza. They are more filling and you can flip the pan so easier to cook, you could use the whole roll of dough then too 😊

    It's like the man pan, far too large when space is a premium in a camper. They should have spent the time to improve the XL.

    We have a conversion T5 and bought the XlXL. The depth of the pan handles mean that it won’t sit on the ring. Also the one we received is faulty with the two handles having both positive magnets. Exchanged it and the second handle has a faulty clip. Such a shame as a great pan in theory.

    Looks the business Will, but I would be a little concerned that it might exceed the maximum pan sizes that VW recommend in the owners manual. Might be worth a check. We always remove the washing up bowl when using the right burner. I'd hate for you to do damage with flames licking up the pan, either to the fridge glass or even the rear, which might go unnoticed.

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point, will check. We are very careful with the bowl and fridge and we were using these pans on the lowest burner heat settings as we find they’re just too ferocious otherwise!

  • @wildhawthorn5912

    We have the Connect XL toaster, and the Connect Pan and Griddle, tending to use the toaster for breakfast ‘omelette sandwiches’ which are really easy, and the pan and griddle for larger meals - including steak and sautéed potatoes, and anything you’d need an oven for. The Ridgemonkey deep pan is the best thing we’ve purchased. I can see that the XXL will be good for more meatier meals, and I love the idea of home cooked pizza, but I’d tend to use the Camping Gaz version of a Cadac for grilling etc. if we hadn’t already invested in what we have, I’d be tempted - but fitting it in might now be a bridge too far! Great review though.

    • @CampervanTime

      We’ve got the Campinggaz Party Grill 400 - not sure if the Cadac pizza stone will fit, but worth checking. We like the stove we’ve got as it’s so compact and very versatile- even using as a wok if you’d like.

    Fantastic review as always, thank you. Just come back from our 1st trip in the (finally) finished van last week ( Anglesey for 2 nights ). Got one of these on a discount code off eBay just before Easter and its great! Cooked the obligatory bacon buttes in the awning on a Campingaz 300 stove, perfect fit, bacon cooked perfectly and the burnt on bits washed off without a mark. Amazing non stick coatings on these pans.
    Can't wait to be a bit more adventurous (your homemade pizza...love it) . Watch out Ramsey, with this and my Omnia I'm unstoppable now...

    We have the RidgeMonkey Connect Combi and Steamer Set which is slightly smaller. We find it very useful as we can cook several items at the same time in one pan. Only thing I wish they would change, are the pins on the hinge. When putting the two halves together you have to engage both at the same time. If one was longer you could engage one and then the other which would be much easier.

    • @CampervanTime
      @CampervanTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can but you’d just need to cover the handle stubs on the XL one as they’d scratch the non-stick of the big one if not wrapped/covered in something (cloth, bubble wrap etc)

  • @MamaKim.

    You’d be much better using the smaller pan for Rosti or two packets for the big XXL as the double style pan is perfect for Rosti. Rosti isn’t meant to be moved around to cook it, as you were doing. Once you’ve broken it up into the pan (when first taking it out of the packet) you should press it down and shape to form a cake so it’s best if it fills the pan completely. Then after it’s brown on one side you flip it to brown on the other side, to crispy perfection! Usually you have to use a plate to tip it out of the pan, then another plate to turn it over before placing the pan on top of it to turn it a final time and returning it to the heat.. all so that you can keep it in one piece and brown the other side. It’s the same technique with a Spanish potato tortilla. Both Rosti and Tortilla should be cooked as a cake and then sliced into portions if served as an accompaniment. The Ridgemonkey is the perfect pan to cook both those dishes easily without the faffing around with plates in order to turn it.
    For a “campers” Spanish Tortilla sauté some chopped onion until translucent, then add diced tinned potatoes (cut into quite small cubes), the potatoes should completely fill the pan with no room to move. Then add enough beaten eggs to fill the Ridgemonkey to the top, you might need as many as 6 eggs, or more, depending on the size of the pan. Cook on a low heat with the Ridgemonkey closed until the underneath is golden brown and the egg has started to solidify on top. Then flip the Ridgemonkey over to brown the other side. Serve hot or at room temperature with salad. I like it hot with baked beans or as part of a fry up. Then use up the remainder at room temperature with salad. Obviously it’s better with fresh potatoes but tinned potatoes are a good substitute when camping.
    For a traditional Swiss Rosti dish, when it’s browned on both sides add a few slices of ham on top, top with grated cheese, make a well and crack an egg on top. Close the Ridgemonkey to cook the egg and melt the cheese. Normally you have one Rosti cake per person and it’s finished in the oven so you’d be better using the XXL pan so you can do 2 portions at once, you’ll definitely need two packets of Rosti, maybe three, it needs to fill the pan and it’s the main part of the dish, not an accompaniment. That dish is just scrumptious! In Switzerland it’s also traditionally served with a Bratwurst sausage and rich onion gravy.. that’s delicious too!

  • @daddynugent

    We prefer the RidgeMonkey 'Multipurpose mini pan and griddle set' because the foot print is not any larger than the traditional RidgeMonkey pans and the pots holds a lot more and the versatility is great, with one shallow and one deep pan together, so its capable for making porridge, using the grill or if you want a casserole in the evening. A super pot.

    Save yourself £12.00 and buy a Berlinger haus granite diamond none stick speciaity pan from Wayfair, more or less the same but seals around the edges to stop drips when you turn it over. Used mine for a year now, none stick surface is as good as new still, wouldn't be without it in my camper van - brilliant ! Fits perfectly in the box it came in, between the driver's seat and the fridge cupboard.
