Evia, The slow #escape to #nature. Land of #pleasure, #adventure and discovery.
Firs and tamarisks, imposing #mountains and endless beaches, fish and game, dragon houses and lighthouses, thermal springs, old #monasteries, #waterfalls, ravines, stone-built #guesthouses, the Cavo Doro Cape … and the friendly and affordable town of #Chalkida with its endless promenades by the sea. Yes, Evia - often mistaken as part of the mainland because it is connected by a bridge - holds the whole of Greece within its #shores
Further along the north coast, atmospheric #Oreoi is 5km west of #Istiea (Istiaia), with fish #tavernas that offer a #relaxing #scene whatever the #season and the #Bull of Oreos, an exquisite 6-tonne marble #sculpture from the Hellenistic era, on display near the port. Nearby, Nisiotissa beach boasts plenty of sand, deep blue water, palm trees and views of an #islet with the #ruins of an ancient tower. And just along the north coast, in an area also recovering after the fires, is #Pefki, #popular with families and friends because of its 4-5km organised beach and numerous tavernas and nightlife options. With the #Pagasetic Gulf and the treasures of #Pelion just opposite and the #Sporades #islands of #Skiathos #Skopelos and #Alonissos within easy reach from here, yachts are moored in Pefki’s little harbour ready to set sail.
If you love outdoor activities, here’s one for your list of things to do on your holidays in North Evia. As greenery returns, so we can once again set out on hiking trails and go chasing waterfalls. Untouched by the fires, Mt #Telethrio and Mt #Licha (near Edipsos) offer numerous signposted hiking trails (with more continually being marked out).
And when it comes to waterfalls, where do we start? The Dafnokouki Waterfalls near Ilia (for hiking and canyoning), Gerakiou Waterfalls near Pefki (reachable by foot or car) and Kremasi Waterfalls in Agdines (in a hard-to-reach part of the forest) are all highlights. The most popular are the Drymona Waterfalls (on a hiking route that passes the Monastery of St David the Elder) in an area affected by the fires but that is now a focal point of conservation efforts (another opportunity to witness nature regenerating).
Nature continues to play a leading role in the experience of visiting Evia, even after the fires. The places that were unaffected continue to offer the same feeling of escape and wellbeing. And the areas that suffered damage, whilst not as beautiful as before, now provide an opportunity for reflection and even hope. Visiting allows you to observe the natural regeneration for yourself and be a witness to the process where, from nothing, a forest is being reborn.
Orei is a charming resort in the far north of Evia (134 kilometers/83 miles northwest of Halkis) and south of #Trikeri and Pelion. This city, dating from 5000 BC, lies in the middle of a green area with beautiful sandy beaches, hills and plains. Orei had its heyday during the Classical period, and preserved many monuments from the Byzantine period. In the square of Orei is the marble statue of “the bull of Orei” which was a tomb in the 4th century BC. In Orei are also the ruins of a Venetian castle, built on the foundations of an old fort. At the harbor there are nice (fish) restaurants, cafes, ouzeries and bars and for your stay, there are plenty of hotels and accommodations in all price ranges.
The area was first inhabited during the Neolithic Era, according to findings in Kastri, near Oreos. The beautiful seaside town that we see today was created by the refugees, that arrived here in 1926, from Pyrgos in Constantinople, who turned the place into a small paradise. Ever since it was formed, the municipality of Pyrgos is constantly developing. It lies 7km from Istiea, and along a beautiful sandy beach. West of Pyrgos (approximately 1km) is a small natural beach near the old Istiea - Edipsos road. This area is called ‘Nissiotisa’, it has many hotels of a variety of categories as well as small homes and apartments for rent.
