  • The sequence of the "Dies Irae" (13th century) is sung in the traditional Roman liturgy of the Requiem, the Holy Mass for the dead, to make people aware of the seriousness of death, when they will have to give an account of their lives to God. Even though our hope in the hour of death may rest entirely on the mercy of God and the redeeming act of Christ, this in no way diminishes the awesomeness of that hour when we stand before the holiness of God.
We offer this song to our beloved Heavenly Father for all the departed, especially those whom no one remembers. But we also offer it to the Lord for all those who come to the end of their lives unprepared. May the Lord, in His infinite goodness, have mercy on them!
The month of November is traditionally a time in which the Catholic community remembers those who have died. It is related to the fact that the end of November is the end of the Liturgical Year with a new year starting the First Sunday of Advent - the four-week period of preparation before Christmas.
