Abbreviations:
MC = magic circle
CH = chain
SL ST = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
SC INC = single crochet increase (2 stitches in 1)
SC DEC = single crochet decrease (1 stitch in 2)
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
SK = skip
X = repeat instructions before x that many times

MC
SC, x6 into mc, sl st into first stitch, ch 1 (6)
Round 2

At this point, I like to weave in the tail from the magic circle and trim the yarn.
Round 5 through 8

Find first back loop and sl st your ch 2 then ch 1,

Cut long tail about 18 inches long, weave through every other stitch of round 14, and pull tight. Make a loop to hang the gnome, then weave the remaining tail through the inside of the hat, making sure to go through the back side of the stitches to secure the yarn.
Beard
Cut 8 pieces of white yarn 8 inches long each
Just under the nose in round 8, tie on 5 pieces of the white yarn onto the front of the body. Be sure to center them.
In round 7, tie the last 3 pieces of white yarn onto the front of the body centered under the 5 pieces above.
Pull apart each individual strand of yarn, creating a full beard of curly pieces. You can trim the beard and leave as is, or you can brush it out for a fluffier beard.
