  • Ribbon fish make great bait for King Mackerel. In this episode we show you what these silver eels look like and how we catch them and brine them to use as baits later on.

    Hey everyone, we added subtitles for those with hearing disabilities. I would also like to translate them to some other languages for people in other countries. If you speak another language and wouldn't mind reviewing the TH-cam translation for the subtitles please let me know! Thanks and hope this helps!

    Nice! do you need to brine them? Why not just freeze them? They get very big here in Brazil and we catch them at night with whole sardines, but it would be great to catch them in bait size too. Thanks for sharing

    I was in Myrtle beach SC several years ago.I live in the upstate. Anyway, I rented some fishing equ. for the day and was fishing off the pier. I caught a ribbon fish and was looking at it. As I was about to throw it back into the sea a japanese man came up to me and ask, "you don't want"? I said no and he said "I take. ok"? I gave him the fish and he said, "They very good. Like very much". So I guess you can eat them If you know how to prepare them. I think I caught five that day.

    What's the defrence between a hound fish and a ribbon fish

    • @ReelHazardous
      @ReelHazardous  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ribbon fish are more like an eels where to hound fish are more like a baitfish. But they are both long, slender, and shiney lol.

    In august in nags head last year there were hundreds of them around the T eating the overpopulation of bait they would come in fast sky on fish cut it in half and slowly turn around to get the other half they were huge too like some up to like ten pounds we caught em of gotcha plugs and those teeth would slice through any leader we had so we didn't fish for em too Long gotchas are expensive

    • @ReelHazardous
      @ReelHazardous  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pinrig life Pinrig life That would be cool to see! Fish are crazy when they get into a feeding frenzy! I've heard gotcha plugs were good for them, thanks for the advice. Maybe some wire leader would keep them from cutting off. That's what I often use for other toothy fish. Where is nags at btw?

      +Reel Hazardous outer banks North Carolina. we live bait for kings cobia and tarpon also. cuaght three 30 pound kings over the weekend now it's drum season due to the northeast blow. We also use gotchas for blues spanish and false albacore talk about getting spooled quick that is some fun

    • @ReelHazardous
      @ReelHazardous  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, I heard there was a lot of good fishing up there. We love to kingfish as well but our season is pretty much over too. Its exciting catching fish on plugs like that. I might be getting my Carolina's confused but is the outer banks where a lot of big bluefin are caught as well?

  • @longshuang99

    Would you please summarize how to catch ribbon fish?
    Here is a starter--
    I list what I can get out of your video recording, please correct or comment them.
    You mentioned once you catch 1 ribbon fish and use it to make a cut bait for more ribbon fish?
    Greg seemed to use small cut baits from some unidentified fish.
    Greg's friend (with masks on mouth) used a weighted floater and a small split shot over the hook. The hook size is not shown.

    • @ReelHazardous
      @ReelHazardous  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +longshuang99 That is correct. Greg initially used a sabiki rig to catch a ribbonfish by jigging it up and down around the pier. (You could also use a shrimp on a hook). He then cut up one of the ribbonfish into small pieces and that is what we used the rest of the trip, mostly on float rigs. That day we were using a float rig to catch the ribbonfish because they were biting on top. (Sometimes they bite down deep, it just all depends on the day). The hook sizes we used were 1/0 or 2/0. There didn't seem to be a particular spot. They would just move around a little bit. Also, if you can fish for them at night they seem to like it better (but our pier generally closes at night so we couldn't). If you have more questions or need me to clarify anything let me know!
