Ruby Tetra Breeding Attempt- Misapplication of the online tutorial?

  • Hello Everyone!
Time to update my Ruby Tetra breeding tank.
Yes, you may already know from the title that I still haven't made any progress.
But it doesn't mean I did nothing and just posted a video of the fish tank.
In the video, I mainly used a method from a website that my fish friend E.J. Brinegar suggested.
I did as the article on the website described:
The lights of the aquarium should be turned off, and the aquarium covered to prevent light from entering.
A day or two later, begin to allow slightly more light into the aquarium daily. Eventually, the pair will spawn.
    However, the result was disappointing.
There's one thing I didn't follow strictly, which is to find a breeding pair that is highly engaged with each other.
Since I simply could not find a pair like that, I had to use group breeding.
Also, I may have been too hasty, because I kept checking for eggs every evening, even during those days when the tanks were covered.
Although it was during the night time when the fish were resting, it could have surely affected the success rate.
But then again, this project has been taking too long...
That's it for the update. I hope I can bring good news in the next video.
Thank you for all your support and patience!
The website for breeding ruby tetras I referred to:

    Dear Bo:
Keep at it. I believe, with persistence, you will succeed.
    Sincerely,

Haha, I have been trying so hard lately but these fish seem impossible to breed. I really hope you can succeed.😂

Well, you have so many projects going on and you have certainly inspired us. We are starting to do a lot more reading projects ourselves. We just put together one breeding tank and we putting together another one soon.

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening friend, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, you are helping me a lot here in Brazil, I am a Biologist and I am developing a project to try to alleviate the indiscriminate collection of the cardinal neon tetra from the natural habitat. Kind regards Ricardo Tadeu city of Guarulhos - São Paulo - Brazil

You're very welcome, Ricardo. I'm glad my knowledge can be of assistance to you and your endeavors in Brazil, even though my own ruby tetra breeding project has been ongoing for quite some time without much progress.

I am confident that you will fine the right combination for spawning. When you do, you will probably kick yourself for something so simple… don’t give up. If you have to, spawn another tetra and then go back to the ruby tetra.

Thanks for your encouragement! As an old Chinese saying goes, "It's easy for those who know, and difficult for those who don't.I will surely not give up. Once I know how to breed them, I'll definitely think it's too simple! Haha!

Hey bro bo! Thanks for the update! Definitely getting closer at least?
Just a few things I feel should be mentioned:
1.Lower the pace of egg checking at first? Everyday from day1? No thank you 😅
Let them settle with no changes whatsoever.
2.Temp, PH should be stable. What's your tds?
3.Water changes which can be everyday helps with a lot of things including boosting their enthusiasm 😂
    (I do 10-15% everyday)
4.The light for the tank is way too bright and unnecessary no? A small RGB light helps with stimulation I think...vivid colors.
5.Lastly with the food, I think they need more variety but only with no additives. Vitamins and minerals, vegetables...I recommend Azoo brand or anything organic.
Thats all I can think of.
Just be patient, don't give up! Hope for the best❤

Hey Bro Ghost! Thank you again for your detailed comment! Regarding your suggestions:
1: Yes, it was really silly of me to check the eggs so frequently.
      2. I haven't measured TDS, but I'm confident that it is very low, low enough to breed tetras with.
      3. I was afraid of startling the fish by doing water changes every day, just as I was by checking the eggs every day. They are still so afraid when I walk near, even though the tank is covered with spawning mops and lots of moss.
      5. I do believe the food is enough for them. Being in my country, it's not possible for me to obtain those foods you mentioned. I tried to feed them flakes, but they just won't eat it.

      @@bothetetrabreeder8734 What happened with #4? 😅
Also do you know if there's any potassium in the water?
If you're having casualties then something is going on...TDS can be too low as well ya know.
In China, there should be ADA products no? AP-1 good source of nutrients and natural I believe. Maybe just 1-2times a week should keep them balanced...
Also water changes can be 50 a week or 30% twice a week.
You can use airtube hose and siphon the water out then in without startling.
It helps Bo. Rooting for ya.

Oh, I can't believe I missed number 4. Yes, I kept the light off for several days, both day and night, when the tank was covered. It was just in the beginning, and I needed to record the situation in the tank, so I had to turn the light on briefly. I'm familiar with ADA, but the only products I can find from this brand are related to aquasoil or fish tanks. I may try to find some alternative local brands. I haven't changed the water for about a month now, and it's been over a week since I last checked for eggs. I'll probably do it for the last time, and if there's still no success, I really need to set the tank back to normal by resuming the filtration, doing water changes, and so on.

If it was easy EVERYONE would do it. Breeding fish is sometimes hard, and there are a lot of failures. Keep trying you'll eventually fine the right combination.

firstly has the person who gave you the suggestion ever succeeded in breeding ruby tetra or any other species in the genus Axelrodia ? if not i dont really think that would be that accountable. secondly you have actually tried breeding your cardinal without any lighting source and failed which means that lighting source is actually quite crucial for fish during their breeding and that actually has been proven by my personal experience as well in breeding H. amandae, H. filamentosus, P. maxillaris and H. megalopterus therefore i smply dont understand why you would like to cover your whole breeding tank from getting any light again. cuz simply if you really keep the tank in a full darkness, i would say the fish would just stay in a sleep mode and never breed. thirdly, i would say if a fish pair is ready for spawning, they shall do that quickly and not doing nothing at all in an environment for longer than a couple of days. if they aint doing anything in a couple of days that simply means that either the pair is not ready or the envrionment you provide is not suitable for breeding. since you have already bred several characidae species think you should be quite aware of that. and the last is that i would say it shall always be way much mrore helfpul to ask for suggestions from someone who has had success in doing it rather than trying out random suggesetions from those that dont really have any expereince in doing it. personally i do think you could get on facebook and join some tetra breeding communities there and look for way much more constructive informaation and tips cuz i highly believe that someone there may have successfully bred the fish in capitive.

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment. As I mentioned in the video description, the method I used was from the website www.keepingfish.com.
I can't guarantee that this method is 100% accurate, but another commenter also succeeded by covering the tanks. So I would assume he might have referenced this method as well, as this article is easily accessible on the internet.
Perhaps it wasn't necessary to cover the tank for the first two days, but it could have provided the fish with a sense of calmness initially. Therefore, I would say it wasn't entirely meaningless.
Moreover, the article suggests that the fish would begin to spawn after the light is gradually introduced, not during the time when the tank is covered.
Searching for help on Facebook could indeed be a good idea, though I haven't been using this app for a long time. Nonetheless, I appreciate your suggestion.
