49:48 that's a BS argument honestly. Marvel has had some REAL quality issues lately, i wont be that fanboy to die on the hill of defending them. But it's not because it's focused on heroes we don't know. The whole point of the avengers was that nobody knew who the hell they were because they were some of the least successful group of characters marvel had. and when marvel started selling off characters to desperately not go bankrupt, the MCu is more or less the group of weird characters that nobody knows or cares about. We all love ironman/ guardians of the galaxy. dr strange and so on now BECAUSE they were in great movies. a lack of notable characters isn't what makes spot endgame marvel shit, it's.. well it's a million things added together of course. character choice really isn't the issue here.

So interesting you guys brought up the "New Era for Movies" because my wife and I where watching SING 2 and during the finale at the end my wife mentioned something to me about "Is there a way to sit in that stadium and watch that show in like VR or something?" I think VR and AR have not really hit mainstream entertainment yet but it could be the time to start creating these "experiences" with detailed rendering and animation in VR or AR spaces. Just throwing it out there.

Man I hope they keep this going. Funhaus is another channel I frequent that did a pod as an additional extension of their skits and gaming videos and eventually it got cancelled. They kept one of the 2 pods but even the 2nd one went to another channel. Not sure if it exists at all now...anyway it's because the pod had a fraction of the views, so it's similiar to corridor.

    • @weavelcow9596

Funhaus had absolutely amazing content, the perfect balance of well written script work, well still be able to produce it in a short enough time frame. On top of that, the edits really brought it all together. Podcast was just an extension of that, no edits, but interesting talks about the reality of different industries.
I'm just taking a trip down memory lane, don't need to mind me.

Guitars (generally) are tuned in 4ths, where Violins, Mandolins, (etc.) are tuned in 5ths. Thinking about it as the "opposite of a bass" is not a bad way to think of it since 4ths and 5ths are reversible in terms of going up a scale or going down a scale.

I remember when Phantom Menace came out. The older generation that saw the original Star Wars didn't like it, while the younger generation, where this is their first star wars to see in the movies enjoyed it( including me). Soon after the critics came along and ripped it apart for continuity errors, bad writing/acting, and the big negative thing was Jar Jar Binks and his species. As far as visual effects of the movie it garnered so much accolades where as the writing and acting side got critique bombed.

I'd actually like if creators admitted when they think their own thing sucked more often, though as somebody who sells stuff I understand why it's a terrible thing to say, like I knowingly put out something I thought wasn't as good as I'd like it to be, but needed the income after all the work and you never know when something isn't going to work out. The Corridor Jurassic Park video sort of stood out as an exception where the experiment didn't pay off, and the positivity seemed a bit awkward and might have been better with admitting it kind of didn't work and maybe discussing why.

But hopefully you guys realize the reason Nolan pushed for no CGI throughout the film is so it could be purely that: a film. Shot on 70mm and never digitized for editing. Oppenheimer will most likely be the last fully photochemical movie ever. That's why, if there was ever a modern movie to go see a film projection of, it's Oppenheimer.

I just rhink the disconnect these days is the believability in the context of the story. Bollywood's insane XGI jank works beilliantly because it's perfectly matched to what they are doing tonally and narratively. When a movie wants to be genuine and serious, and the CGI just looks janky and cheap, then that's just a poor use of the technology VS what your project needed.

  • @feketelucka

I didn't find Oppenheimer's explosions underwhelming. I think, just like some find the excitement in it being real, some couldn't care less and if nothing else, they at least don't have to be bothered by something being 'off' (with CG explosions often being the case).
I don't think that the explosion was meant to be a super impressive and breath-taking thing (though for me it was). Compared to, for example the new Avatar, which made a huge case of "look at this amazing CGI", Oppenheimer isn't about the beautiful practical elements. It's just a part of the story - why should it be more?
Yes, the no CGI part of marketing was phrased awkwardly, even by Nolan, but the film doesn't suffer from not having CGI/not using CGI for the explosion.
I feel proud of them, showing that you don't have to rely on CGI to create something seemingly impossible, because lately movies took that turn. I'm not suggesting CGI is bad, but it doesn't have to be the only way of dealing with 'impossible realities' in filmmaking.

Sam: "People's idea of bad CGI is really just closely tied to soulless media," this sums up very well what I believe is the real critique many people have of modern Anime with CGI elements. "CGI in Anime is *garbage* and has no place in the medium," is a (paraphrased) comment I see or hear very often from anime viewers, and yet one of the most widely acclaimed studios often proclaimed to have "the best looking" animation (Ufotable) uses almost exclusively CGI elements other than when they draw the keyframes for characters. Layers upon layers of post processing, emissive light sources, 3d backgrounds with a 3d camera moving through their shots, fluid sims etc. and they get praised by a community of people who hate CGI! It would be cool if you guys would look at some of their stuff on an Animators React Anime episode, they have a lot of production materials released that give a look at how they do what they do.

  • @RAN480L64
    @RAN480L64 ปีที่แล้ว +2

CGI lets executives keep changing things till the last minute so everything looks unfinished and un cohesive because there are 20 different fake light sources and 50 power windows smeared all over the place and this will never change and movies are ruined

To be fair, in the case of Cyberpunk 2077 they've actually patched the hell out of that game to make it into what it was supposed to be. And even with all the issues it had at the release, it still had an incredible story, soundtrack and art style. Personally I feel like they've more than plenty redeemed the game.

People complained about the backgrounds in Phantom Menace. They were mostly fake but we were blown away by the rest. The trailer is the first viral download I think.
It’s only in recent years we aren’t completely blown away by the next generation of games or visual effects because of how far we’ve progressed. The leaps now are lost to a common person or ai crazy like potential that is a enigma to itself.

Niko: "We're seeing the dying breath of a mass cultural experience." That got completely glossed over, but is soooo true. All the wind is out of the sails on Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, etc. They were great runs but nothing energetic has filled in the space. We are probably going to see a video game movie era, but who knows what else. IDK bring on Bollywood, that would be fun.

if i had millions of dollars at stake, i would *want* to know if it sucked. a lot of the problems come from the ones in charge of things like say WB, not actually knowing anything about the medium. these people arent film makers or writers. or vfx artists. they are business people. their only passion is money. your guys passion is making cool stuff. thats the difference. and the cool stuff in hollywood comes when someone makes a film or is allowed to make a film that also just wants to make something cool and cares enuff about it to want to make it good,a nd not just have it make money. its the same with anything. as soon as it becomes about mone first, you may as well say goodbye to quality. in any sector.

People seem to just ignore that the surrealistic approach to the visual effects in The Flash was obviously an intentional artistic choice by the director. I personally am not a fan of the film, but people just can't keep assuming they're bad shots and that the artists were bad. Would you go to a Monet or a Van Gogh painting and keep trashing that they're bad as if it's a fact because they're not painted in a realistic style? If you felt that it was a bad directorial decision for the film, then you have the freedom to feel that way about the film. But don't keep stating that the CGI in the film was bad as if it's a fact just because it's not realistic. Cinema doesn't need to be realistic.

Can I hate the Christopher Nolan now!? Sick! the dark night was a conservative movie for boot lickers, he shows batman as a hero who saves the day by violating everyone's privacy and joker is bad for no reason, Bane is a rich person's idea of a revolutionary even though life in the city sucks ppl who support him are just thugs somehow the entire city is violent criminals. They show the white lie myth as a positive thing, lying to the public about who two-face was. Overall batman is portrayed as this benevolent powerful monarch by the vertue of being wealthy. Doesn't hold a candle in terms of style and meaning of the new Batman 2022 movie btw.

The explosion in Oppenheimer was 100% NO cgi. Just very smart physics/practical effects. There’s an awesome video of someone recreating the shot with practical effects. - th-cam.com/video/o2FqU2f6DRc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HCUkdy9f7rj-slGA
I have to say, I disagree a lot that was said in this podcast. CGI literally takes the magic out of filmmaking itself. Sure it’s convenient, but the human eye will always be able to differentiate between reality and cgi. So if it can be done in camera, it’s always the better option.
I’m not surprised about the opinions in this pod, as they are from VFX artists. The fact that Christopher Nolan created such an amazing and groundbreaking practical effect, is just impressive to say the least.
