  • Nicholas Coss is a French (b.1965) artist from Paris.
"My artistic training is the result of meetings in various Parisian workshops and an assiduous practice of drawing. My style has been forged over the years. In recent years I have made many portraits.
I use multiple techniques, especially charcoal, which gives me a real feeling of freedom. I don't know of a medium that offers so much strength in the lines and delicacy in the shadows, so fast and easy to use and that requires so little recharging that allows you to work in one go. As for colored inks (or acrylic colors), they accompany my drawings to cover them and fix them without making them disappear. To maintain the spontaneity of the drawing, I work in a short time, as much as possible after a live model. The time limitation is beneficial because it forces you to get to the point.
I perceive drawing as a language made up of lines and colors through which a vision of the world, emotions and style are expressed. In the studio, alone with a blank sheet of paper, I hope that the next drawing is stronger than the previous one, expresses the unspeakable, opens an unexplored path, a new space of freedom. It is an endless search, full of disappointment, sometimes exhilarating."
