This is a brilliant movie on so many levels…. One of my favorites. Great breakdown and explanation, the lighting was so unusual and was an invisible character.
love the vid man, well done. one thing i would say, is even if you feel youre up against the clock its kind of annoying to hear you saying how you gotta rush every min. feels like im not getting everything
Yes. I feel like this should have been two separate presentations.....both done in a more relaxed, easy paced manner. Tons of interesting info here....but I too feel like a lot was skipped due to time constraints.
From my (limited) experience as an AC on short films in the UK, that is how all the slates look (scene/slate/take). As far as I know, the number #010 refers to the card number (or "roll"), B obviously meaning B Camera. However it's a bit odd that this slate doesn't have mos/sync/int/ext/day/night or filter info.
Ex Machina is one of my all time favourite movies, great call from your viewers. True about Event Horizon, it also traumatised me and made me extremely wary of horror movies thereafter!!!
There was a very genuine need for all of the road cases in this production. Take a look at where it was taped/filmed at - incredibly isolated. Had it been just a fraction more isolated they would not have been able to make the movie there. So isolated, that I'll bet it limited their gear selection considerably
im 4 years late but at 18:20 its about the whole aesthetic not whats more inviting or not also its very minimal wooden door with a brass handle is not minimal...the whole movie is minimal and as clean as possible....basements are made of concrete so its just polished and left exposed just as it should be and that is actually very easy to figure out
Ma-CHINA! 😂 sounded like Donald Trump haha! Thanks for this video dude, I'm shooting a scene from this film (as a die hard fan) with a friend next weekend, so this is really helpful stuff! The scene in particular I'm recreating is the conversation between Caleb & Nathan about why he gave an AI sexuality :) Also yes Ma-Kin-Ah is how you pronounce it! :)
1:08:18 I love this scene. Caleb thinks he's done good by rebelling against Nathan and helping Ava out of his facility, but Nathan tells him that everything went according to his plan. He completely fell for it, and Caleb knows that he's in some deep shit. But he's so oblivious to everything he's just thinking of Ava and getting her out of there, praying to god she really meant what she said to him.
Why would Rob Hardy choose to shoot with Tungsten Lights with CTO/CTB filters over it and then have it color corrected to look like daylight? Very confused as to what his intention in lighting this way is... anyone please explain.
I believe it's about the number of different wavelengths that are contained in tungsten light, rendering more nuanced and rich colours. Sunlight contains lots of different wavelengths, tungsten contains still a number (you can look up exactly what's in there), and "modern" lights, especially tubes, are merely made up of about three(?) different wavelengths that look white in an RGB color space, but when it comes to lighting surfaces, it's definitely possible that you get different details in the shading when using lights that contain more individual wavelengths that the pigments in the materials respond to. To sum up: Some surfaces/pigments might not reflect their "true" colours when lit with tubes or LEDs that don't contain those wavelengths. With tungsten you might get a true-er reflection that is obviously compromised when correcting in post, but might still be more nuanced than the "simpler" tube or LED lights.
Golly, I apologise, I didn't take note of your name. It doesn't matter for me because I'm sure the heck gonna recognize you if we encounter one another. I'll say, "you're that guy that does those film studies and DOP lessons, aren't you?" Then I'll ask, "Are you as funny as you are on your vidis?" Sincerely, I really appreciate the sharing... really....
Filters is what I've most commonly seen. He mentions he doesn't shoot with filters anymore, which I found interesting. He relies on the power of post now. It makes sense to me. Tiffen sells filter plugins. They offer a 2 week trial and then it's around 500.00 USD after that. I've also seen some nylons slipped behind the lens to create some sort of blooming effect.
Matt Workman answers that question in this video: th-cam.com/video/6ND-PBiefWs/w-d-xo.html This is just a Fan Channel and has no affiliation with the original channel.
Hey man! I love that you are reuploading these videos from the original channel. When I found out he was removing his videos I tried to download as many as I could. I have about 5 videos that you don't have on this channel. I would love to Dropbox them to you so you could post them on here for everyone to see! Shoot me your email and I will upload and send them to you via Dropbox. I tried to message you, but couldn't find the function to message you privately. Thanks!
with due respect... the way over produced "feel" of the cinematography" becomes meaningless from a $$ point of view as 90% of revenue is from TV / Computer monitors, which doe NOT catch all these magnifacant DP actions< no?
What this guy calls "blooming" is what I call bleaching and a lot of porn videos have excessive back light that distorts the edges and in general gives you a headache from the brightness.
You are projecting a lot of ideas there at the end. There's no reason to believe that Eva **ever** had real feelings whatsoever. She is pure will without emotion. She used her escape tool and discarded it without a thought. That's the whole point; AI's aren't human.
watching in 2020, take a break from the video game and come back to these please!

So glad these vids are back up somewhere! Good job guys!
Thank you for re uploading!
Thanks for the reup ;)
No prob! :)
***** He was getting copyright strikes and that wouldn't allow him to promote his products etc.. so he took them down.
***** Naope these are it.
WOuld love more breakdown of the LIGHTING - where its coming from, the more about focal lenses of each shot you talk about - LOVE THESE VIDS

Hey Matt! I learned recently the mini slate at 43:00 is for insert shots
Thank you. This is the only one I wasn't able to see.
Doing God's work, thanks so much!!!
Thank you for doing this. everyone can pick up some knowledge from his breakdowns

An extended interview masquerading as a TH-cam channel
Ur thumbnail is no where near as good as this video was! Subbed!!
Great video 🙏
I don't care how you pronounce machina. I love this movie and am so looking forward to watching this video, even four years after the fact.

That number in the bottom right is the roll number. Slates are named in a numerical progression for each new set up. No letters.
In the UK that is
Keep Up Great Work!!

Please do a PT Anderson movie!
Yyyyyyyyeeeeessss. Thank you.
I heard you said ver-gi-na, sorry man..... but awesome video!!!!!
Can you discuss some of the subliminal techniques used?
Does anyone else understand the point of keeping a consistent aperture? Doesn't the D.O.F. change along with the focal length anyways?
Very nice and interesting breakdown, i hope you can do another breakdown for Annihilation (2018). Greetings.
Thanks, i am on a hunt to find them all, do you have the music video and the commercials too?
Me too. I think Matt took them down before he announced the shutdown of the show. :(
I just found a couple more videos, including a music video and commercial. I have uploaded them to this channel.
Oh man thank you! You'r the greatest :)) i had no luck searching on my different hard drives and i can't believe that i didn't DL Matt's vids :/
WOW THANK YOU
its in norway
What's that triangle Mat talks about at 26:00? Does it have a name?
guys do you know from where I can find images of the architectural drawings of Nathan's home seen in 9:38
It is actually pronounced "ex mah-kin-ah "as it has Latin origin

Hey mate, what digitizer are you using?
you need to do Apocalypse Now!
XD "matschaina"
I think that 28 Days Later was directed by Danny Boyle and produced by Andrew Macdonald written by Alex Garland!
2:05 that number 10 is the reel number
Maybe this is a stupid question but,
Why does the monitor looks blue?
The one that they're looking at in the camera.
that is so weird that I chose to watch this today. 38:23
its pronounced ex mangina
danny boyle directed 28 days later and sunshine
How do you create the blooming? Is it filters or?
