A Rainbow High retrospective: How have these dolls changed since 2020?

- Rainbow High has been around for a few years now and I’ve been praising their improvement with every release. I think it’s important to take a bit of a deep dive and explore how they’ve changed and why I think they have done so wonderfully in their relatively short time as a brand.
I’d also like to bring the definition of retrospective into this as it is normally used after the end of something but it is not the only usage. It is often used in business as a way of pointing out negatives and positives in the past that can be applied in the future. Thus I think it is fitting.

Price points and release dates used in this video reflect the United States market as that is where I live and is the main market for these dolls. That is not to take away from other markets but as it is the target market and most successful market, it is the most relevant for this sort of discussion. I would not discuss Witty Toys Winx Club dolls from an American market perspective, for example- as their main market is Europe.
Finally, this video contains a LOT of opinions. If you find yourself offended by any opinions I have on my personal doll property and you did not hand craft the doll yourself then you need to go ahead and log out of the internet forever and breathe in the cool autumn breeze because there’s something seriously warped with your perception of this world.

It's sad how you have to say this due to all the doomsaying going on in the doll community about RH. I'm still very much enjoying RH and I see the improvements that they're doing, so I hope they'll live on for a long time coming, as no other doll line matches their level of detail. I feel like pricing discourse kind of forgets to account inflation
I heard a lot of talk about RH getting discontinued right when costume ball was about to release and I remember being like ...dude they started doing fabric shoes and adding more jewelry and stuff, why would they dump more time, effort and budget into a doll line that's going away? 🤦
Honestly the fact that 2017 to 2020 was SUCH a dire situation for fashion dolls and the prevailing idea that we had to settle for high cost low quality dolls because that's how "production" had become, these dolls really was a breath of fresh air. No matter how many quality control issues these may have, the fact that their designs have always aimed so very high has lifted the doll market up from what it was even 5 years ago and I appreciate that more than anything honestly.
One thing about Rainbow High is that I think in 5 years, we'll look back at the line with the same kind of appreciation for how revolutionary it was that we give Monster High. It's truly the highest quality doll line out right now, I just hope that doesn't go to their heads and this new era for year 3 is a smooth transition.
It’s absolutely INSANE that series 1 was only 2 years ago. It feels like it was half a decade ago😭

@@thefragranceapothecary7281 og bratz lasted 8 years 2001-2009 then the first bratz reboot as well as moxie girlz was 4 years 2010-2014, projet mc2 lasted more than 2 years too and omg are celebrating their 5 year anniversary next years. And i didn't count others line like little tikes, lalaloopsy, etc...
I think the doll delays and cancellations are a good thing because it gives us time to catch up with what is on the shelves right now.

1) Vanessa from rainbow dream introduced braided hair into rainbow high!
2) tiara from the royal 3 introduced real glass crystals!
Kia had rhinestones too :)

I’m only worried that while the collectors are willing to have a higher price point for higher quality, the average consumer who buys play line for a child will not be willing to spend more which is problematic in that they won’t sell as many which could mean a limited timeframe for how long the dolls stay in production. I wish they could be a mainstay competitor to Barbie who doesn’t come and go.
I love that we can document all of this through TH-cam and the wikia.
There are a lot of questions people have with Bratz because there was less social media and documentation of things like variants and differences in releases over time.
the reason for the slumber party and rockstar lines being more expensive is that they were store exclusives, Rockstars are a target exclusive and slumber party is a walmart exclusive. When a store gets exclusive rights to a line it's the store that sets that price point for the line.
They cost like $30 to make so costs of transportation and for profit is another reason they are $50.
I could totally see the improvement that the brand has went through, I love all the different molds and how they fit the characters! I really love rainbow high for the creativeness they have given us so far I cant wait for what they come with next! Also I love your video it’s awesome! Explains a lot about the brand too, So cool! 💚
I’ve never had so much fun with changing the hair and outfits with my dolls as I always felt like I was missing so much in their wardrobes… but RH just consistently gives me so much.

Loved this video! I'm a play therapist, so I had bought couple series 1 RH dolls a couple years ago for my clients to play with during sessions, and considered the line as strictly kid toys (in my eyes), but then when Shadow High hit Insta, I was floored and opened my eyes to Series 3, and so on. Just breath taking dolls!
Yes, for me Shadow High, including the Twins and the now new second release, are the absolute best!

No one besides Jett has the chest joint and it’s genuinely really sad. How are the collector dolls all $60+ without chest articulation! The fact that they gave Roxie ankles, but not chest was insane. Who cares about ankle articulation if you can have chest articulation??
Rainbow/Shadow High are my favorite modern day doll brand. These dolls are so unique and colorful compared to a lot of dolls that were on the shelves before. It's really amazing how much they've improved in just two years and I have high hopes for the future of this series because there's a lot of great potential in the future. MGA is really taking a good turn in being a top brand in the fashion doll market, I notice their dolls are everywhere now more compared to Mattel or any other brands.
I remember back in 2020 when I first got Series 1 Ruby, my first RH doll. I was simply blown away by the hair and clothing quality and I LOVED the inset eyes. And normally I HATE the faces on MGA dolls (don't get me started on how much I cannot stand the faces on Bratz and LOL OMG dolls). And now I love Shadow High and Rainbow High much as I love Monster High Gen 1, despite them not having nearly as much nostalgia. It was amazing seeing RH evolve and get new face molds, more skintones, better clothes, better articulation, and two of my favorite things: thigh high socks and fabric thigh high boots. I love the monochromatic color schemes and all the dolls are so aestheticly plessing as well. I fell in love with Shadow High the moment I first saw the Storm Twins' character designs in the show (Veronica and Naomi Storm are two of my favorite dolls of all time and are currently comfort characters for me) and I loved the greyscale on Shadow High Series 1. I also loved the addition of more goth, alternative, fashion with Shadow High.
Okay I’m a huge fan of rainbow high and personally if they have to get rid of the second outfits and sell outfits in fashion packs I’d be fine with that. Especially if they came with the hangers I’d be completely fine with that. As long as I keep seeing them on the shelves ❤
Yessss imagen everything they can make and that means we can buy doubles of the dolls so we can have them in the new outfits more sells for them but yesss the fagsition packs will make such a spark in the doll world I just feel it
I’d love fashion packs, but please, not blind surprise packs you have to gamble if you’re getting what you want.

I would only support that if they lowered the price farther. $25 - $30 felt worth it because of the 2 outfits.
Personally I feel like series 3 is the peak of rainbow high, don’t get me wrong I love and own multiple of some dolls released after but there’s something about that series that’s just so memorable, something that to me reminds me of Bratz, something that I hope we get in series 5
Mine is Shadow High they are just so cool looking. I wouldn't mind having every doll in the collection even Ash. I have Shannel and Natasha. Was going to get Heather today but all the ones at the store had mess up lips. My favorite overall doll is Deliah Fields.

A lot of people complained about the shimmer skin on the OG series 1 but I honestly loved it on them. ☺️💕
I love rainbow high/ shadow high! I definitely became obsessed the minute the dropped in stores. 🥰 They made me excited to collect dolls again.
I'd like to share my view on the pricing and profit from an international standpoint.
I wouldn't find it too weird if Shadow High will end up like Pacific Coast if I'm being honest. PC retailed for €42 here in Belgium and most euro-countries I know of. SH retailed for €40. In comparison to series 4 of RH who are €33, that's a huge difference. The dolls did sell, but nowhere near as well as the RH lines. The pricing mostly hurts international collectors and kids because we don't have sales here and if we do, they're minimal and barely worth it.
Secondly on the profit aspect as someone who studied economics but is more on the human side of it all at the moment. The problem nowadays isn't that companies want profit because that's needed to stay afloat as a profit-organisation. It's just that they want MASS-profit, way more than is necessary or even morally right (knowing the amount most workers are getting paid and the amount that's getting charged to customers). Just look at all the multi-billion companies and people who have a billion dollars on their bank account. That is not normal at all and these toy brands are definitely able to charge way less and still make a huge profit.
Some people claim capitalism is the best that happened to the West, but it's actually the worst. Prices rise and living standard goes down much faster than it did in the past. We're in a recession at the moment so most people aren't able to buy luxery goods (which toys are), MGA pumping out dolls this quickly and at the price they are, it's going to be much sooner than expected that the RH brand will get discontinued.
It's so many factors that will cause it (price-point, distribution, amount of dolls per year, the way the world is at that moment (like the recession and inflation I mentioned), mass-profit they want to generate....)
I just got into RH back in August, I'm not normally interested in dolls at all but these are so beautiful and well-made I couldn't resist. I like to restyle mine as fantasy characters so I actually don't use the clothes they come with at all and I've just been stashing them to resell later. Regarding the price point - I think if MGA wants to find a balance between what you pay and what you get, releasing the dolls with one outfit and then also releasing fashion packs is the way to go. It will keep the dolls within reach for those on a lower budget but also give people the option to spend more if they want more stuff. Its also entirely possible that since this doll line was new, they were eating some of the production costs initially and might be trying to scale back if its digging into their profits too much. This sort of thing is something I deal with as an artist all the time, sometimes you just have to try things out and make changes as needed.
As someone who just started to collect dolls, this is extremely informative for someone like me who missed the RH hype in the beginning. I'm still not totally into them but the improvement between S1 and later series is absolutely breathtaking. I have Daria and Coco and they absolutely look beautiful, especially with their new face molds. It's just so crazy that we were facing a fashion doll drought and that all changed literally two years ago. Your retrospective is honestly so good and such a breath of fresh air. I feel like a lot of the other sort-of retrospectives I've seen either don't delve into the dolls and really don't sound like their doll collectors themselves or have some low-key bias(whether against or for) that kinda misses the point of retrospectives, or are from older doll lines. You point the good and the bad and the way your videos are made just add another layer of relativity that any doll collector, whether casual or hardcore, can relate. I really think you did amazing job and I really hope you can do more of these for some of these recent doll lines.

Also ik that this is RH retrospective but I'm so glad that you mentioned that LOL OMG is doing well in the beginning. I feel like people wanna see other doll lines fail which makes me sad since I love omg and I feel like they're getting thrown under due to their face molds.🥺

The section about series one has me wondering which releases of the series 1 girls I have. I didn’t start collecting until series 2 released, so I’m presuming wave 2 for most of them. I had never really thought about how the dolls may have differed depending on when they released! Super interesting!
I really hope if they do fashion packs they are full outfits and not surprises.
i LOVE rainbow high so much! Rainbow high is the ONLY doll line i want not only doubles but triples of. I LOVE restyling them so much NOT because “ nothing looks good” but because EVERYTHING looks AMAZING on them! The same doll can rock multiple aesthetics other than the one she comes in. You can dye their hair & clothes, you can use heat on them. They come with AMAZING detailed clothes! FABRIC SHOES?! PAINTED DETAILS?! SOCKS THAT WERENT MOLDED ON?! Rainbow high got me into doll collecting again, they got me into fashion and they let my creativity grow. I am forever grateful for them🫶🏼
If we have to lose the secondary outfit but get the fashion packs instead, I'm all for that. I'm a little annoyed that the doll of Glitch that we're getting won't be what we initially saw of her on the cartoon, and don't get me started on the TEASE of the costume ball Shadow High doll's initial second outfits on that dumb throwaway "feature" clips how episode. I would LOVE to see a Shadow High big trunk equivalent of what we got for Rainbow High.
This video definitely makes me appreciate RH even more. Yes, there are problems but overall, these dolls are incredible. I want RH to stay forever.

I only knew about this doll line since this summer, I wished I had known about these dolls when they came out, I would have definitely started buying the earlier dolls

I wonder if anybody has ever made a spreadsheet of all the face mold numbers. It'll not only be a good record to see what new molds were introduced, but a view of if/when MGA has retired/will retire specific molds going forward. For example, the Laurel/Holly face. How many 2022 dolls actually use that head mold? It feels like it was retired after pacific coast-- assuming anybody in pacific coast actually got that mold.

Very helpful video, thank you. I just started collecting RH; used to think they looked like bugs bc of their eyes 😅, but came around after buying the dollhouse and being pleased with the quality. So far I have Lila Yamamoto, Mila Berrymore, the boy doll, Kia Hart, Hali Capri, Harper Dune, Daria Roselyn, the twins, and all the Jr High series 1 dolls (they were in a gift pack at Walmart for $40)
they’re only being displayed so I don’t know much about the articulation side, it was interesting to learn about their issues I’ll keep an eye out for that.

they actually never used the chest joint again, I wasn’t sure at first because I own a lot, but the chest joint only exists in prototype bodies for, rockstars, harley of neon shadow, slumber part, and aisha from the rainbow divas. I think it’s pretty telling that for the first wave pf special dolls prototypes of all three are present but for rainbow vision only one of each set has one, so it probably means the team wanted the articulation but mga said no. maria, paris, and roxie ONLY have foot articulation, which is cute, but is so much less fun without chest, especially considering all of monster high core dolls have chest ones now
I do believe an articulated shanelle body did pop up when shadow high bodies first leaked, which makes sense because shanelle is so special and standout in quality and design

Paris has the same articulation as Roxie where the ankle articulation like Jett but not the chest articulation
I live on the East Coast of Canada and I have not yet seen the Costume Ball dolls here. I dont even know what they would retail for in stores. I am still trying to get the Rockstar dolls, I have Tempo and I got her on ebay but trying to find the other two online, in my price preference has been rough. I am a fashion pack devotee. When MH came out I decided I loved them and would get them all so yeah, this is right up my alley. It also makes sense because the lower price would make it easier for kids to get ahold of the dolls.
Yeah, RH has improved with each release, but I will always love the cute round eyes and faces of the originals. BTW P Coast was Awsome! I like the bags and towels, and all the dolls are so beautiful.
the original face sculpt had a lot of variation off the bat and continues to, even new faces have tons of proportional and shape variations I know because I’ve measured my doubles. like samples do generally have smaller sharper chins and eyes and the eyes point more inward etc.
i used to hate rainbow high dolls because of the head mold but then series three came out and it changed EVERYTHING for me!

As a new collector I loved seeing the evolution of the changes they've made😍 I have a 6 pk of the original dolls that I haven't opened yet and I am curious to see if they have the neck articulation🤔 as well as comparing them myself to the later dolls I now own 😃 Of all the collectors out there you helped convince me the most to start collecting these gorgeous dolls and my collection is growing quickly since I'm totally hooked on them 😆

They've made a lot of changes in a short amount of time. I generally take dolls as they are so I was fine with series 1, it's mostly the super shiny faces I didn't love. Series 3, Rockstars, and Slumber Party I guess have been my favorite era of the dolls so far. I also liked Pacific Coast, they just cost too much, and they should have given them all high heeled sandals and called it a day. Shadow High is cool, I just prefer normal skin tones overall. Jr high is interesting. Before RH came out I thought the dolls would be that size, sort of Bratz sized, and I was surprised they are as big as they are. A part of me wonders if they were scaled up during early phases of developing the dolls and that's why the small bodies are better executed. Who knows.

loved this video! i started buying RH dolls right after lily cheng was released. at the time i was amazed at the quality of lily from videos online, but was a little disappointed when i looked into RH and the only dolls i was interested in were jett, carmen, and vanessa. in my country, australia, they retailed for $100 (jett) and $65 (rockers) at the CHEAPEST. i was happy with those three dolls i got, but pretty disappointed that the only RH dolls i liked enough to buy were the special edition dolls. and then series 4 and shadow high came out and everything changed.
i think that that really demonstrates how quickly RH/SH improved. where before, i had to spend $65-100 for a doll i liked, nowadays i can spend $39-59 for dolls who i think are WAY MORE well-designed and impressive. even the cheapest RH/SH dolls are still expensive, especially in australia, but they've improved so much that to me, getting a RH/SH doll from any line post series 3 really does feel like such a treat.
Great video. Re: the future of RH, I just can't believe that Runway Bella was cancelled. She's my favorite character : ( I am soooo disappointed - I hope its released eventually. And I am just as sad that we seem like we won't be getting second outfits anymore - is it even RH / SH without the second outfits? It's such a defining feature of the doll line. I am glad that the releases are slowing a bit - I haven't been able to buy any new dolls since the slumber party kine, and even that I only have one of because it's all so expensive all together. Waiting for some money to catch up : , )

If i had it my way ALL the dolls would have that waist articulation. I wished I had the money to buy ALL Jett Dawson bodies and rebody all my dolls, lol. I also like that her undies are that classic holographic silver. Very universal. I also think that her black hair and rainbow hair gives her ALOT to work with in terms of outfit mix ups!

in EU these prices are nearly doubled... divas for 80 bucks, regular dolls for 30 and up 🙃 it's insane ngl. they became mega popular over christmas and these prices have not dropped yet!

very informative video for someone like me whos starting to watch to collect rainbow high and doesnt know much about em. at the end of this video i checked my amazon ca and we ve a lot of choice and so i cheked which one and see what i like about her and what i like less or dislike and if i like or not the outfits and which outfit i would dress her in, so i added a bunch to my wishlist and karma list so i can get emails when prices drop. a lot of em on the website are on sale rn a bit ig bc of black friday, when i start gettin em imm probably only buy em when on sale and if ive giftcard on amazon ca which i usually get 1 for xmas. i commented on your live the other day im the girl who commented i got rainbow vision tessa park at my walmart for 27cad i havent opened her yet, but im wondering what doll or dolls should i get next? i wanna get on sale, im either thinkin i would get another one of the rainbow vision or if i got 2 they could be different color characters or 2 dolls of same character/colo so i can interchange their outfits. i also wanna get at least 1 doll of each color.
Even though I knew most of what you discussed because I started collecting RH in early 2021, and I've watched most of your videos, it's still informative to see the dolls side-by-side and get a summary. I didn't like RH dolls at first because, as a Barbie fan for over 40 years, I needed to get used their faces. I definitely like them better with the newer eye shapes. As for price, that is an issue, especially in other countries. For me in Canada, it just means waiting for sales and getting only ones I really want. I think RH & SH could go on for at least a couple of years. Inflation, Covid, and political issues in China are threats to production and distribution, but I really hope they can be overcome.
Hey Brooke, if your Phaedra has the stress marks on her lower legs - boil some water like you would for a boil wash and dip her legs. The hot water softens the plastic a bit and it fixes the stress marks.
Edit/ I'm also just. Way over the price discussion. Yes these are expensive dolls, yes the price increasing is annoying. Yes I would like them to be cheaper. Unfortunately in the current climate with inflation and stuff especially, lower prices mean you're going to lose quantity of extras and/or quality of product. Do I want lower prices? Of course, duh. Do I want it at the cost of the quality of my current favorite doll line? No, no I don't. I would rather lose the hangers and extra outfits in exchange for the dolls and clothes to stay super high quality if they're going to lower the price.
A thing I also just noticed on Christmas that they have improved on the stands, there no longer rely bulky
So series 2 junior high STILL aren’t out in stores in my area…. Reminds me of slumber party line. Can’t get them or find them. I have yet to see ONE of them in person… also I really do miss jetts articulation. The last time we saw it was the large amyah doll… I bought paris and really think she should have been added. We got our first pet in the rainbow high universe, first phone. I know u said u don’t have her but that’s huge! Lol

So I’m actually having to buy a second Harper because of the leg issue so I decided that I was just gonna make a Harper into a custom with a prosthetic leg, I don’t know if I am the first to think of this I doubt that I am lol anyone who wants to also do this please feel free! I’m just painting her legs silver so it’s not crazy or anything but it’s something and disability representation is not a thing in RH so someone had to start it.

Yessss. Shadow high did NOT come with stands, I remember some of my dolls from the first batch actually had a small black sticker on the box covering where they originally did say they had hangers in the box.
you said stands at first but I’m guessing you meant hangers? Since shadow high does have stands, all of them but only neon shadow came with hangers

So odd about the lip lines because I got mine once they came out in stores and my series one all had lips lines. I remember getting them once they were putting them on the shelves.

Btw when Rh first released, I didn't even know that there were people who collect dolls, so when I saw Ruby, I was actually pretty intimidated by their quality:D I was like....who buys a doll this expensive for their kids?? Xddd (I live in Hungary so they were much more expensive than in the US) and now here I am 2 years later with a bunch of them, loving them, and cannot wait for the future with them :D

I'm interested that you didn't mention Avery and her fashion closet. Also, Amaya, original hair salon Amaya and 24" Amaya. Did you leave them out purposefully?
I was mentioning innovations in the dolls. The Amaya’s and Avery and Ainsley etc. didn’t really bring anything new that became a staple in the line 🤷♀️ this is meant to show how the dolls built off of each other. 24 inch Amaya didn’t effect the actual RH line in any way. The only thing I’d add is that white hair Amaya brought tinsel to the line I guess
@@xCanadensis Avery's wig thing was very different and innovative, it was the first time I saw a wig fit so well.. the quality of it could have been better but it was different and cool nonetheless. I've only seen wigs go well in bjd or ooak stuff. But I get this video might have run on quite lengthy if we noted everything. This is still very enjoyable to watch.
@@saphirothplaysbad4708 I like the wig system but they never did anything else with it so it wasn't particularly notable in the narrative of this one which was just to show how each (main) line built off of each other (or in some cases went backwards). It would be fun to look at the gimmick dolls specifically or do a true comprehensive take on each release later on! Seems an RH release lull is coming so I'll have some time :)
So wait are all the Pacific coast dolls supposed to have extra legs ? Cause I know all of series 4 dolls don't . Anyway my sister and I both got our Pch dolls on sale I got Simone and she got Phaedra right and her Phaedra comes with extra legs but my Simone didn't

@@xCanadensis I am 40 minutes in and you just said that the shimmer looked better on darker skinned dolls such as Sunny and Skyler. I would expand on the topic and say that Krystal was meant to have lighter skintone but the consumers' complaints lead us to getting what we should have got in the first place :) Sorry if you got annoyed, didn't mean to do that..:( I love your vids and knowledge
Sorry that it’s a bit out of order. I’m bad about that- I loathe being scripted so I don’t do it as it comes off weird on camera. When Laurel comes on screen I bring it up specifically to mark how year two ends up up-ending a lot of the big issues (skin tone, eye color, face sculpt).

White haired Amaya didn’t really originate anything except I guess tinsel but that’s not particularly notable imo

I disagree that series 1 was lower “quality” than future series. Future series had improved aesthetic design details verses the quality of materials and production.
Quality of materials is about equal equal but value of materials has certainly gone up (now they will use metal and zipper tracks and rhinestones).
But I’d argue the quality of things like the eyes has gone WAY up. Quality of production is also certainly up. Series one was such a train wreck

I don't really see kids actually playing with these dolls, I would play with their hair and feed them up but I wouldn't play with them like I did with my monster high, every doll they make is beautiful ❤️ I love these dolls so much
When I find them at thrift stores and second hand sites they’re generally very played with. Seems hair styling is the favorite thing
