So this is a hack of SMB 1 on the NES, but it's also a modded emulator running it. I have no idea how it works, but it is awesome. I like how this is All-Stars graphics with NES colors, but there’s no three-color limit.

That’s because the modded nes emulator allows for sprites having 16 colors each rather then only 4 colors, while the amount of colors onscreen has been bumped up from 16/25 to 64 colors atonce,not sure if multi scrolling backgrounds were added to it as an extra feature as well,
But the results are impressive ,,,
However , it can be done on the nes by adding extra V ram, using a mappers with tons of memory rom along with bankswitching to updates tiles on the fly,
While those 64 colors can be dithered,blurred and blended down to 16/25 colors, and for sprites, they can stack many sprites together to get around the 3 color limit of sprites,,,
So trough clever tricks, it can be possible on the real nes.

I’ve only ever played Mario 1 and 3 on a nes classic. I haven’t played the others so it was cool to see 2 of some of my favourite games mashed together, great video, and I look forward to the next one!

This rom hack is insanely cool!
The graphics are 8- bit versions of the Super Mario All- Stars version of Super Mario Bros 1 (which was 16- bit)
I also love that they used the Super Mario Bros 3 sprites for Mario, Luigi and the power ups too! It fits surprisingly well!
Ah, yes, that one hack that won't run on real hardware because it would actually MELT it due to excess of AWESOMENESS.

Maybe the modded emulator is for the graphics, the romhack can be perfectly loaded in a normal emulator, just with the normal graphics

Hopefully the creator behind this mario hack will make a mapper sothat we can play it on a real nes, because what’s the point of making a nes emulator with features the nes do lack? And why making a nes game with these unsupported features in mind?

This has to be one of my favorite rom hacks! I'm hoping to get to play it some time. Seeing Darby and Lair co-op with my favorite game(smb3) combined in makes me very happy.

I think I know how they added the Raccoon Mario powerup abilities into this rom hack. They looked for expendable space on the rom, inserted the sprites for both the Super Leaf and Raccoon Mario and Luigi into it, then used the sprite for the Super Leaf to have trigger script programmed into it that causes switch Mario and Luigi's sprites' state to switch to those sprites when they touch the Super Leaf, programmed an invisible hitbox scripted to damage enemies in front of them when the correct button is pressed, without attaching a hurtbox to said invisible hitbox, then moved onto adding the levels and stuff to it that were custom made. I do not know how they added the 2 player mode stuff though, but I think they used the free space left by the dummy data in the rom that was from canceled levels from Mario 1 that in the base game if you hacked to enter those dummy data levels, you'd either end-up in the infamous Minus World, or some level that has literally nothing in it except death tiles that makes the bottomless pits kill you. I still don't have much ideas for how everything works, as I only minorly have done romhacking, but my guess is why you can't use a normal emulator for this hack is because normal emulators cannot read the expanded data size of the rom as it goes past the maximum filesize limit for readable NES roms for the emulators that are not custom made for this particular hack.

This rom is awesome!, even tho the graphics are a bit wonky, you should make this a series!!
This can now be run in RetroArch using a modified fceumm libretro core. A user on the rom hack's Discord server has posted the dll-file for this emulator for RetroArch (Discord server found if you enter the video description, enter the "more info" dialog and enter the romhacking link for this rom hack). Once you have entered with Discord server, enter the en-chat section and there you can find the compiled dll-file for RetroArch for this modified emulator. This modified emulator is called fceumm mod, and has its own GitHub page =)

This is so good. I remember seeing this before. It's a special NES emulator thing that is also sold as FPGA stuff or NES-on-a-Chip. It's some enhanced TurboGrafx16-ish NES with more nametables, more colors, more CPU instructions. It's that sweet inbetween spot between NES and SNES.

ROM Hacking has become so advanced nowadays. This is done in similar vain to Super Mario Bros 3-Mix. Lots of low level assembly programming and you can add just about anything :)
