"Molly Tuttle is the first woman in the 27-year history of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards to win Guitar Player of the Year." Easy to see why -- she's fabulous. Great technical breakdown, especially the tips on practicing. No one gets this good overnight. Practice is key. Great job pointing that out. Big thumbs up.
Molly's flatpicking technique is mind boggling. I have been a flat picker for 50+ years and she just blows my mind. I am no slouch as a bluegrass "shredder" but her level of musical talent is in the stratosphere.
NuclearGrizzly You likely are a wonderful flatpicker ... but this chick is awesome ... and ... good picker or not, you sound like a funny bastard. EDIT - while I’m here ... my current favourite pick is a very heavy polished mahogany one. I also have a bone one that’s really heavy. Always found heavy ones better for flatpicking ... which is probably why I suck at it (even more after watching this vid)
What is the prefer thickness of a pick to use for flat picking? Her looks pretty thick. I heard sayings some use turtle shell for hardness or coconut shell....???
Molly is absolutely AMAZING! I never listened to Bluegrass until I discovered her and now I can't get enough of it. She is pure and honest and from what I know, a really nice person.
About time you got to reacting to Molly! This video completely changed my views on how I want to play acoustic. And that she’s able to play that all while singing like a bird still blows my mind.
I've met Molly. she is very humble and down to earth. I actually competed against her in a picking contest years ago and of course she won.. but she told me that when she heard me play she thought it was all over for her.. She is just an excellent musician well rounded in several instruments and sings excellently but just does what she loves and it comes out wonderful. And Fil you're right on about practicing technique,, play to the edge and train the brain over and over.. Just how you said it I try to tell students. I love your interpretations you really understand the fine points.
Forgive me if it's not my preferred style of music. But, when you see greatness, you can't ignore it. I need to keep my mind & ears more open. I'm amazed !!
Theo I said the same thing about metal, and over the last year and a half (thanks by the way covid) I’ve been neck deep in symphonic metal bands 😂😂 so yes eyes and ears open for me too 🤘🏼
I've seen her four times, never get tired of it i have been watching her on TH-cam sense she was a kid playing in the family band they all very good ,she does claw hammer guitar pieces that blow peoples minds as well she plays banjo and mandolin, writes songs, she is the full package.and she is touring the UK right now with the Transatlantic Sessions.
It's fun to go back and find these older videos. I've been listening to her for about 3-4 years. At first, very few people outside of bluegrass circles even knew her name. Now she has two Grammy's and dozens of bluegrass awards! Just bought tickets today to finally get to see her live. I absolutely love how she has surrounded herself with four other amazing musicians in Golden Highway. I can't wait for the show!
I'm a vocalist, and have never played a guitar, but I love watching and listening to your analysis, because you do such a great job of breaking down the techniques that you see. And your advice on rehearsing and developing muscle memory applies equally to learning vocal music, in much the same way as learning to play a song. I also like that you spend time analyzing what you see and hear, rather than just the (mostly) empty reactions on most reaction videos.
I just came across this older post, and was happily reminded of getting to experience a live performance of Molly from the 2nd row center, probably within a few months of this video posting. 🥰 Seeing her from that close, for a full concert, was absolutely stunning! I got the chance to chat with her briefly as well! Her Grammy wins the past couple of years are richly deserved! 🥰🤩 Recent videos of her performing and teaching alongside Tommy Emmanuel are magical too! Do a TH-cam search for one or more of them! 🥰
Wow, to my embarrassment - I never heard of her before this video - but after a listen, I'm going to have to put her up there as one of the ten best combination vocalist/guitarists I have ever heard. Thanks again Fil.
After viewing this video I adopted Molly's bridge rest technique for my (much slower) singer-songwriter soloing and arpeggiating. I think it is best described as bridge and saddle resting. It was quite a revelation. For most of us the brain and muscles need a point of reference with which to find individual strings. What is usually done is to rest the three non-picking fingers below the high E string. The bridge palm rest gives much better control and makes for less tension in the wrist. Although this is the classic palm mute position, I think the amount of muting is very slight unless you move up a bit closer to the sound hole. To a lesser degree I also adopted her wrist technique for strumming. It is especially helpful in an arpeggiated strum for the same reason you're talking about of needing a point of reference to find individual strings. The only thing greater than her knock out playing is her generosity in sharing the details of her technique. Thanks for your work man. In the tradition of Pegasus it is always inspirational!
In 2017, Tuttle was the first woman to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year award. She went on to win the award a second time in 2018.
That's some acoustic playing that you have referenced in the past that will "Melt my face" , she has definitely went and done that♡♡♡♡Also what a great voice!
Finally a video that makes sense and will make me a better flat-picker. Your explanations and video viewing were fantastic...very helpful. Clear, understandable, visual, progress from strumming pick to flat- picking...just an excellent teaching video all the way around. THANK YOU Wings!
Really appreciate your analysis. You are so knowledgeable. I also am impressed with how respectful you are to the artist you react to. I have seen several reaction videos, and the vibe is always the"host" freaking out. It's more about the host than the artist being watched. You use your vast expertise to point out why the artist is so amazing.
There was nothing insightful about his analysis. Made a bunch of very very simplistic observations about a video, and channel, that does real analysis and breakdown of technique.
I came across Molly Tuttle last night just surfing TH-cam and wow, she is awesome hey she plays that guitar so well and love her vocals and singing style!
The entire Tuttle family is off the chart crazy good. Her two brothers are excellent musicians along with their father. Good video Phil. Keep em coming.
Another great review! Molly's amazing playing is happening while she's SINGING with perfect pitch! Truly, an extraordinary lady providing an amazing performance. There is live video of her doing this song on stage. Thanks!
Wow, this is my all time favourite clip on this channel. Your analysis will help spur me on in my own guitar learning journey... I can’t express how much I have enjoyed and will benefit from this, thanks man
Thanks for including Molly, I knew you'd love her. What a lovely singer also. I've been lucky enough to see her live, jamming in festival workshops as well as headlining. Wonderful!
Great analysis from a skilled player and teacher. Some subtle and very important insights and description from Phil. It's great to hear him tackle the simple but not so easy task of flatpicking ! Thanks for posting !
I read an interview with Billy Strings, who was kind enough to plug Molly when she first moved to Nashville. Molly rented a room from Billy and his (now) wife. Billy told the interviewer "Remember the name Molly Tuttle. She's going places. She recently flew home from a tour of Sweden, 18 hours of traveling. She went to her room and started practicing." Molly just won her second Grammy Award, Best Bluegrass album for "City of Gold."
I've been following her since her family put up those TH-cam videos way back in 2007 or so and she was about 15. Amazing to watch her flourish. Thanks for this analysis. She deserves this level of attention.
There are parts where she sounds like she is playing a Dulcimer. Thats an old Appalachian 4 string instrument I think you would like. She has an incredible talent~
The greatest part of music is the journey it takes you on. People forget about everything when they really enjoy the music. Keep up the great videos! Rock on'...
I have never been into this type of music personally but as a musician and knowing what goes into playing an instrument I can appreciate that this lady is amazing . I have the utmost respect for her ! Highly entertained watching her play and her technique. She also has a very good voice. First time I ever heard of her too .
Fil, this phenomenon is about more than technique. That is a Townes Van Zandt song, a piece of music written by a genius destroyed by his addictions. This manifestation by Molly Tuttle is a signal of recovery and rebirth. So very important, unbelievably so. A whole group of people brought low by opiods are being called to, and urged to arise and shake off that weight. TVZ used to play at the Cactus Cafe at UT Austin, he died just before I arrived in Austin but I knew people who had seen him, and one who knew him very well. Oh, such sweet joy to hear this young woman's voice and music.
I just stumbled across her thru my music feeds. i suggested to you to think about looking at her. I should have known you knew of her.. this is 3 yrs ago. I live her! Thank you!!

Molly is sooo top shelf in her abilities !! :)) Especially when she teams up with Billy Strings and his band. Check out "Little Maggie" Billy and Molly.
Oh my God, this is about the first time ever I've had a celebrity crush or what have you, being 26 years old. I just can't help but binge on her records, live performances, interviews, been a few weeks now and I can't hold back haha, I even switched from my typical blues playing to learning bluegrass
Holy guacamole!!! Thank You for that great review and video Fil! Mollie Tuttle is off the hook, AMAZING! She's an INCREDIBLE guitarist and vocalist. I'm all about Mollie, Fil and The HU Band video performances right now. What true talent. Fil, it's such a pleasure and so refreshing to view your reviews and your own music videos. Your knowledge of music and the instruments and your intelligent descriptions are so interesting and informative. I'm learning so much from you. Your own vocals and musicianship are enviable and worthy of respect and compliments. I'll keep watching you. This is one of the best parts of my day! Now, if I can talk you into reviewing The HU Band videos and describing what you see them doing with their Mongolian vocals and instruments, I'll be so happy and grateful. Please Fil! 🎸 ROCK! (Keep On Rockin' In The Free World!🎤)
Great video, something I learned many years ago that can be applied to the muscle memory concept are the three stages of learning. The three stages of learning are: cognitive stage, associative stage, and autonomous stage. This is often spoken about with motor learning for sports but it definitely applies to any motor skill including musical performance.
I like what you said about learning slowly here. I used to teach classes on Buddhist meditation and how to develop virtues like kindness, patience and compassion, and i would share the same thing with my students. I called it "the power of familiarity", and i used to say that this is how we learn anything in any field of life, and that spiritual virtues are exactly the same. No one suddenly becomes patient or kindhearted overnight, and just because you find it difficult to be like that now doesn't mean you aren't that kind of person. I would remind them of how a baby learns to walk or talk, There is a lot of falling down and nonsense babbling at first, but in the end it always becomes so second nature to us that now we don't have to give any thought to it at all! There is a point where the body and mind work together so well that we can do things without having to plan it out. All we do is to apply the intention and it happens! Watch a good athlete, a martial artist, a dancer, etc., and you can see this in action. So why do we think spiritual values would be any different? Anyway, sorry if that sounds "preachy" in any way. I enjoy your videos and am always amazed by the talents that you introduce us to. It helps me to enjoy these musicians even more when i see how dedicated and proficient they have become.
Such a helpful analysis of Molly Tuttle's demonstration performance. Molly did a very clear teaching video about cross-picking on the Guitar World channel. It's an excellent illustration of the point Fil emphasises about learning slowly and building up.
Long time! Ck. out Molly's new album. I think her cover. Like a Rainbow is a master piece. Her guitar playing is like a july4th sparkler! Plus she has her own unique voice. Between Molly and Billy Strings. This style of music is in great hands!
She's doin' her own thing now. Moved from the Bay Area to Nashville like she shoulda. She's blowin' up here too. Saw her play on 4-3 in a club in Nashville, the Wednesday night crowd there beat out any weekend show I've ever seen there.
This is one of your best ones so far Fil!! Molly is a phenomenal picker and an amazing human being. Really enjoyed this one, thanks! Now, how about a breakdown of Sierra Hull's mandolin playing or William Apostol (from Billy Strings)???
Thanks for hi-lighting this video and for the added analysis. I have watched the original over and over and shown it over and over to my guitar students. Molly is a phenomenon. To a lady guitarist with not many female role models, Molly is a total breath of fresh air and a welcomed inspiration. 🎶😎🎶
Also she mutes the E Aand D strings with her palm as mentioned in the interview. She is fantastic! Never heard of her before. Thanks Fil! As usual you introduced me someone new to me.
She's a great picker!! Reminds me of when I'd go to Tennessee in my teens. When there people would sit out on the front porch and pick away. The people I saw there sounded good enough for a studio but many did it for fun and unity. Love this vlog. Keep kicking it and picking it. Peace.
Wow! Thanks. I just saw her in Telluride and noticed her wrist movements and was curious. I also just discovered your videos just this and they are excellent.
I love her style, her voice, her personality, her humility. You can tell she's real... just doing what she loves. Her parents must be very proud!
She picks like a demon while singing like an angel.

@@frankoniko8158, Treat their women better? She won the top award. What's better?

Molly's flatpicking technique is mind boggling. I have been a flat picker for 50+ years and she just blows my mind. I am no slouch as a bluegrass "shredder" but her level of musical talent is in the stratosphere.

Anyway, sorry if that sounds "preachy" in any way. I enjoy your videos and am always amazed by the talents that you introduce us to. It helps me to enjoy these musicians even more when i see how dedicated and proficient they have become.
No problem!
Such a helpful analysis of Molly Tuttle's demonstration performance. Molly did a very clear teaching video about cross-picking on the Guitar World channel. It's an excellent illustration of the point Fil emphasises about learning slowly and building up.
Such a warm sounding guitar and great singing.
Thank you again for communicating this so clearly....
Long time! Ck. out Molly's new album. I think her cover. Like a Rainbow is a master piece. Her guitar playing is like a july4th sparkler! Plus she has her own unique voice. Between Molly and Billy Strings. This style of music is in great hands!
My word, Fil, I'm so happy you posted this. She is an amazing musician, and I will be looking for more of her music.
Thank you, again.
she is in a family band, been following her for about 10 years she just gets better
She's doin' her own thing now. Moved from the Bay Area to Nashville like she shoulda. She's blowin' up here too. Saw her play on 4-3 in a club in Nashville, the Wednesday night crowd there beat out any weekend show I've ever seen there.
It’s super amazing that you gave us a close up of her pickin hand! Thank you!
This is one of your best ones so far Fil!! Molly is a phenomenal picker and an amazing human being. Really enjoyed this one, thanks!
Now, how about a breakdown of Sierra Hull's mandolin playing or William Apostol (from Billy Strings)???
Thanks!
Or maybe Sierra's guitar chops? ;-)
Thanks for hi-lighting this video and for the added analysis. I have watched the original over and over and shown it over and over to my guitar students. Molly is a phenomenon. To a lady guitarist with not many female role models, Molly is a total breath of fresh air and a welcomed inspiration. 🎶😎🎶
No problem ☺
Also she mutes the E Aand D strings with her palm as mentioned in the interview. She is fantastic! Never heard of her before. Thanks Fil! As usual you introduced me someone new to me.
No problem!
There is no muting involved. When you have that type of accuracy, only the strings you intend are going to sound.
She's a great picker!! Reminds me of when I'd go to Tennessee in my teens. When there people would sit out on the front porch and pick away. The people I saw there sounded good enough for a studio but many did it for fun and unity. Love this vlog. Keep kicking it and picking it. Peace.
Cool!
A great semi-in-depth analysis. To go into it deeper would probably be enough to drive a crazy person sane. Excellent as always 👍👍
Thanks!
Wow! Thanks. I just saw her in Telluride and noticed her wrist movements and was curious. I also just discovered your videos just this and they are excellent.
Its called "crosspicking". Molly alternates between flat and crosspicking Effortlessly. Fine singing voice as well.
I value every video of yours. Thanks for teaching. You're a great help.
Thanks!
Way to go! I love Molly, and her voice has the perfect high lonesome sound
What a right hand!! Like you always say Fil, it's practice practice practice. She's phenomenal!
I hear a lot of Norman Blake in there. And, that's a good thing. Thanks, Fil!
