Hello! So the timer can be set for 4, 8, or 12 hours. You can tell what you have it set to by what color the indicator light is glowing. On the control dial the number 4 is written in green ink and when it is set to 4 hours the light will glow green. The 8 hour setting is blue, and the 12 hour setting is red. Hopefully makes sense and answers your question.
You wont have any issue with using these on your bamboo shelves. I leave mine running for 12 hours at a time and they are not really even warm to the touch after running so long. These have been great lights, I bought 2 more sets!

Do these get hot? I ask cause my shelving is bamboo.
