    when I saw your video about the driver should have free play I was relieved. because it has been some time now that I have been planning to have that SA hub repaired because the driver has play. but I lack the tools to open it. now I don't need to

    3:02 - you forgot to insert the ball bearings into the race!

      Thank you and you are good to notice that. I didn’t take out the ball bearings for my disassembling video so I did’t show putting them back into the race. However, in the top photo the ball bearings are out of the race. I should have shown taking out and putting back of the ball bearings in both videos.

    Thanks for the great video. I cleaned up my hub today and saw your video as reference.
    After all the work, I went for a spin and something weird happened. Whenever back pedaling on first and second gears, all good. However, on Third gear, the chain looks “soggy”, like there was some resistance to back pedal… the chain looses tension. But only on third gear. Any ideas?

      Did you loosen your left side cone and tighten your right side cone first? Please check my blogs, step 10 at bromptoncraft.wordpress.com/2021/07/04/re-assembling-the-brompton-brw-hub/

      If the inside core is pulled too much to the left, the actuator plate might not catch the craws properly. I did break my actuator plate before when i forced back pedal.

      @@fun2011idea Yes I did just like you showed in the video. First hand tighten right side then unscrew just enough to put the lock washer. Once this was good, I did the other side: hand tight and then unscrew a bit so the wheel could freely turn.

      @@fun2011idea The reason why I'm doing all of this is that my actuator plate also broke, so I enjoyed to give a good overhaul and clean, besides changing the actuator plate.

    Is it really necessary to use threadlocker on the four bolts that close the cage around the sun gear? there's a fair amount of vestigial threadlocker still stuck inside the female threads after cleaning and the thread tolerances seem quite tight - although, admittedly, I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner

    • @fun2011idea
      @fun2011idea  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say it is better to have thread locker since the part is in constant movement and get a fair amount of vibration. And it is a concealed part, you won't know when the bolts get loose. It is always a good practice to clean the old thread locker and apply a new one. There are multiple ways to clean thread locker video on the web other than the ultrasonic cleaner. Please note for a small nuts and bolts like these, just use a light duty threadlocker. I used loctite 222.

    I have same Brompton hub. It is about 10 years old. Unfortunately recently I have not been able to stop turning the pedals as when I do the hub locks up ie it no longer free wheels. I cannot coast along on my Brompton and definitely not turn the pedals backwards. If I strip down the hub, clean and regrease everything like you have with the hub in your video will this solve the problem or could it be that something is actually broken inside? I can probably strip clean and re-assemble but not sure if I could identify anything that might be broken or worn? I don't know any bike shops near me that would have the technical skill to service my hub let alone do a good job. I also dread the price of some one doing it. Also whether they do it properly.

      @fun2011idea  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For not able to back pedal, most likely the actuator plate has broken. But if not even able to free wheel, I'm afraid at least one of the claws has drop off or broken. You can only find out by opening the hub and check.

      @@fun2011idea Many thanks for your quick reply and advice. Yes riding it now is like riding a fixed gear bike, the freewheel mechanism of the hub is not working, so if you try to freewheel the chain comes off and there is lots of 'graunching' noise, but it still rides if you keep turning the pedals, just don't stop!! I haven't ridden it in the last couple of months. I need to fix it as I like riding from Brompton. Many thanks again for your help.

      Sturmey Archer HTR 145 Classic Ball Ring Spanner. Can Google to find who is selling it near you.

    have another question - this time abt bottom bracket.. i got different answers from vendors if i want to insert a third party cermamic token BB... some says need rethreading / retapping... some say no need... ? seek your advice why need or dun need?

    • @fun2011idea
      @fun2011idea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Retapping ensure tight fit for the bb. If the threads are in good condition and same specification with your bb, I see no reason for retapping.

    Hi thanks have a question.... i always cycle around the same route (fort road to changi) and on average most of the time , i cycle on 5th gear... but recently i feel that when i cycle on 5th gear, it seems rather straining (like i feel as if there is sticky thing preventing the chain from running smoothly)... i wonder what is the possible issue... is it the bottom bracket or the internal hub?

    • @fun2011idea
      @fun2011idea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's the bottom bracket. If it's the bottom bracket, it will happen on all the gears, not only on 5th. Are there any abnormal sound or rough feel on the pedals?

      For gear use NLGI 0 grease, you can get Sturmey Archer internal grease or ALCO Super Lube 00 grease. I used ALCO. For bearing use NLGI 2 grease, I used Park Tool PPL-1 Polylube. I got both from Amazon. Now they may be out of stock and you can search the web.
