Dornenreich, not really black metal these days but I find the vocals exceptional. Another one I love would be Emptiness, in their album Nothing but the Whole. Crazy good.
Both great. Fuck I hope I see Dornenreich at Prophecy Fest this year. Got my ticket just waiting till the last minute to get my plane ticket cause of some personal bullshit. Fucking life.
I don't know if this counts but Woods of Ypres's Aaron Gold had a very disctinct and recognizable voice. I know Woods isn't strictly black metal (even when they started and had more of a raw type of sound), but it's certainly BM-adjacent.
Let us never forget, it was Nocturno Culto with Panzerfaust who gave us one of the most unique vocals on a BM album ever. After 25 years I still don't know if I like it or not. But this is a classic I will listen to again and again. Fuck!
Stawrogin of Odraza has also some insane deep grunts he is able to perform really well during live shows too. Besides the names mentioned in the video, I would say that Attila Csihar, Arioch/Mortuus, Onielar and Mika Luttinen have unmistakable vocals.
Franca Storm is an amazing vocalist. I personally think his style was at its most unique on their second album "Jilemnice Occultist". A lot of weird voices there, coughing and so on. Absolutley brilliant!
I quite like the vocals in Aara (Switzerland) mostly quite shrill and high pitched, but the vocals are sort of behind the instrumentation in the mix, which i think works pretty well
I'm surprised you didn't mention Dave Hunt from Anaal Nathrakh. He's pretty unique too, able to sing clean operatic vocals (even falsetto) and screams interchangeably.
I was waiting for Landfermann so much. One of my favourites, such as Nocturno Culto, Thomas G. Fisher, Quorthon and probably Hoath Torog. Thank you for your content, Farvann. You're special
Dani Filth is definitely one of the most unique. As far as my favorites? Young Shagrath from Dimmu's early days (Enthrone Darkness and Spiritual Black era) is probably the best black metal vocals, IMO. Also, Emperor Magus Caligula (Dark Funeral), Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection), Abbath (Immortal), Mikko Aspa (Deathspell Omega).
I think you're not overtly fond of Marduk and probably Funeral Mist, but I love Mortuus' weird, wet, gurgling, guttural rasp amid the more standard fare. I love the guy from Ruins of Beverast, a German guy, one man band, who has classic BM vocals but interspersed with deep, baritone clean vocals, haunting death-like gasps and hissing whispers. In terms of weird, I think Attila has some of the most bizarre vocals, but that's an obvious one. As a fan of Inquisition, check out a London based BM outfit called Abgott; see what you think of their album Fizala and the undead frog in the throat vocals.
So glad you brought up Rainer Landfermann, I heard him for the first time on Anal Nathrakh's album Passion, and I never managed to find out who did those absolutely insane vocals. It's one of my favorite songs purely because of his vocal style and how batshit insane he sounds, I absolutely adore it.
I know they're well known, but no Varg, no Satyr, no Attila Csihar, no Garm, no Gaahl etc.? They're still pretty unique in their vocals. Anyway, Rainer Landfermann on Dictius Te Necare did the most insane vocals I've ever heard in BM. Glad he's back with a solo album, and still can do it.
So glad Famine from KPN made it on the list, if even briefly, he has perhaps my favorite BM vocals, so unique, with his high pitched shrieks more common in their older material and the style mentioned in this video, where every word is almost spat out horrifically. Really makes you feel like a medieval French peasant
I think it also would be nice to mention the vocals on Behemoth's Grom, Pest on Gorgoroth's 1997 Under the Sign of Hell, Levifer - Tribute to the Supreme Beast, Pactum - Summa Imperii Satanae (pretty close to Pest's voice, but still worth to check/mention) and Varjoherra on Azaghal's Helvetin yhdeksän piiriä (specifically on Kun Aurinko Kuoli). Great video, thanks for sharing.
Regarding Odraza - their vocalist (Stawrogin) has a quite unique growling sound that is more prominient in on the Odraza's second album. Also famine's other style of vocals is quite unique, too
I really enjoy Déhà's work on albums like 'Cruel Words' and 'A Fleur de Peau'. I don't think that those albums may qualify as "black metal" for the purists (more post/black or shoegaze perhaps, though I don't think that really matters) but his vocal range is quite unique. He has an incredible amount of bands, projects and collaborations going on by the way, for anyone interested in checking him out. The other one that brings joy to my ears is Dany Tee from "Los Males del Mundo". Their album "Descent Towards Death" is incredible, especially for the intro from "The seventh seal" film.
For me some of the most unique vocals in Black Metal is from Messiah from Arkona (I had an opportunity to play with band on one stage) and Nantur Aldaron from Sacrilegium. I recommend to listen albums like: Arkona - Imperium Arkona - Zeta Reticuli: A Tale about Hatered and Total Enslavement Arkona - Lunaris Sacrilegium - Wicher
Nice video and nice channel, thanks. You mention Nattramn from Silencer and would like to know more in the style? Try Nordgaren from Fleurety and comment, please.
Dude I'm trying so hard not to argue with the Mortuus fans in the other comments. They're uttering total nonsense saying Mortuus is better and blah blah blah... Legion's ambition, his spirit and the way he fit the lyrics into the rhythm of the music was unmatched. Including the live shows! Baptism by fire, for example; listen to that song live, back to back... Mortuus just says words, screaming. Legion believes in the narrative he's telling and he comes so close to make the audience believe it!
best vocal performance of all time is on Peste Noire's La Sanie des siècles - having both Neige and Famine trading off in the song Deuil Angoisseux is probably the most insane metal vocal moments of all time. I personally think that Moonblood's vocalist is also very recognizable. Also B.S.O.D uses some very experimental vocals in Grausamkeit (monkey sounds at the beginning of Kratze off the Pink Green demo lol)
Praising the art and the person for creating it is NOT the same as endorsing or agreeing with their beliefs. For example, I like Kreator but their lyrics get on my nerves. Doesn't matter, still listen to them and enjoy their music very much ! Why not separate the art from the artist ?
Mephorash ! All around they are recognisable . From music to vocals . The music has a cold energy no other black metal band has succeeded to give me that feeling . Worth checking out🤘🏽
Great list. Dictius Te Necare is probably my favorite BM album for vocals, but I think my favourite BM singer is Onielar (Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult / Bethlehem) : she has a unique voice and his work on the two last Bethlehem albums is really good.
Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ J.J. of Harakiri for the Sky Sakis style and unique intonation is recognizable instantly. And J.J. has a more typical style, however you can instantly recognize his voice whether it's Karg, Seagrave, HFTS, or any other features like in Ellende's song.
Check out Alexander Norfgaren’s vocals from the Fluerety: A darker Shade of Evil demo (1994), piercing high pitch screams. Previously from Dodheimsgarde, Aldrahn influenced a lot of the singer’s styles you mentioned with his shouts. Garm from early Ulver and later has a versatile singling style.
Fluss from Aara is pretty spectacular. Her high pitch screams, while typical of black metal are quite unique, calm and haunting. Just saying! Their Triade albums are amazing
Something I think is pretty interesting is how Black Metal has such a massive range in vocal styles, and how ‘unsafe’ (for lack of a better term) much of it is for the voice. I hypothesize part of that is enabled because of less heavy touring and fewer live performances. Abusing the voice long enough to record an album every once in a while is less likely to do significant damage than playing 5 shows a week for 6 months or something like that. It’s also neat to describe the ‘howling’ style as sounding the most painful… because it absolutely is, even from a technical standpoint! Black Metal being a genre less focused on live performances really opens it up to creative styles and techniques that would otherwise be quite ill-advised if performing regularly because of how unsustainable it is, and I think that’s pretty cool. Also great vid, as usual 😁
I like your list of BM singers. I am surprised you did not include Ihsahn of Emperor. I think he sounds very unique. His clean vocals on his solo CDs are spectacular. Skål \m/
Didn't think you'd put Dani Filth in here, and a worthy add to the list. No matter how much 'trve' black metal i listen, 'Dusk... And Her Embrace' will always be in my top 3 best albums ever. Great stuff here, subbed!
Farvann, since you enjoy the silencer 'hysteric-menopause' style of vocals you might also want to search for a greek underground band called Ψ.Χ. If you verbalise these two greek letters in a row it sounds like 'ψυχή' which means 'soul'. It is more of a tongue -in -cheek, troll project, very provocative lyricks, no live performances, unknown artists behind the project, all the good occult stuff that is always nice to have in BM.
Gleb Sysoyev from Grima and Second to Sun to me is single-handedly the most unique sounding vocalist, his screams are so high-pitched and long it's chilling, almost like tinnitus sometimes
You know, I listen to a lot music and rarely research the bands. I hadn’t realized that Grima (one of my favorite BM bands), StS, and Ultar share a vocalist. I can hear it now, but I thought it was different people doing similar styles. Another vocalist I would say is a little similar to him would be Ken Romlin from Mist of Misery and Night Crowned. His highs are insane.
Mortuus/Arioch is awesome! Even when he performs live he can do such an enormous range of different growling/screaming sounds, all absolutely chilling.
I'm beginning to listen black metal (I tried years ago but de4th was more appealing to me, now is the other way around hahaha) and it was thanks to the vocals of Manuel Gagneux of Zeal & Ardor which thank to that I think I discover the type of vocals I prefer, the high pitch ones (if they're called like that) like the Spectral Wound too (which I came across thx to you). Your videos are very helpful to me in this new journey, so thanks a lot 🤘 any recommendations especially with that criteria I mentioned are much appreciated! Other recommendations are welcome too :) Keep it up man your videos are well structured, appreciate the touch of overlapping the audio from the next cut of the video with the one before, great content.
I'm a bit disappointed Gaahl didn't make it to the list. He does both amazing screams and a lot of very deep, low clean vocals as well in his current band. Personally I find his style being very recognizable.
Maybe I'm on the outside looking in but my favorite extreme vocalist is Travis Ryan. I know Cattle Decap are deathgrind but i Believe there are elements of black in there. Enjoyed the list and i now have some bands to check out 🥾🪖🥾
Yes! Awesome response. If I recall correctly, in an interview he basically talked about how fascinating he found the human voice and what it's capable of. Apparently he listens to everything from Enya to indigenous throat singing from other countries.
Just nitpicking, but I think inhales are more of slam thing than a deathcore thing. 99%+ of deathcore vocalists exclusively exhale. Also, I think Mizmor’s “Ring Wraith” shrieks are inhaled and definitely approach whistle territory. He’s a great vocalist.
Silenius from Summoning and Abigor, Mika from Impaled Nazarene and the Moonblood vocalist are very underrated and among my favorites. Also Ville from Moonsorrow is great even they are no true Black metal.
Surprised that you didn't mention Attila Csihar! He was a game changer, unlike anything I've heard of black metal before him. But great list, loved it!
My favourite black metal vocalists at present are Fluss from AARA and Cult Of Fire's former vocalist, Devilish. Now while they aren't black metal, Scott Ian Lewis and Devin Duarte of blackened deathcore bands Carnifex and Worm Shepherd definitely have unique vocal styles and can easily be heard no matter what band they feature in. Especially Devin. His vocals are like a strange blend between Dani Filth and Tom Barber.
@@carlosalbertogaravitocamar5386 Yes, EDM is something realy unique, just wrote about it in my own post. @@memedaddy793myb but they are sooooooo good
@@memedaddy793Very typical but perfectly delivered
@@memedaddy793 what?!?!?!? 🤣🤣 I have to respectfully disagree
Farvann I'm surprised that Neige from Peste Noire/Amesoeurs/Alcest wasn't highlighted. His screeching popping vocals are extremely unique. You did mention Peste Noire, but the sample you provided was of Famine who has an entirely different sound and style. Neige is one of my favorite vocalists.
Yess, especially Dueil Angoisseus is absolut madness.
Because Alcest is an Emo band
His best vocals were with Lantlos
@@milkweedreflectionsalcest is blackgaze
@@callme_A_K that's what he meant)))
Dornenreich, not really black metal these days but I find the vocals exceptional. Another one I love would be Emptiness, in their album Nothing but the Whole. Crazy good.
Really love the vocals on the first three albums.
Fuck!
Cool list.
I would just add my honorable mention. Spellgoth from Horna. Awesome vocal. \m/
Stawrogin of Odraza has also some insane deep grunts he is able to perform really well during live shows too. Besides the names mentioned in the video, I would say that Attila Csihar, Arioch/Mortuus, Onielar and Mika Luttinen have unmistakable vocals.
I love the howling shrieks of German atmospheric black metal band Ultha. They're doing great stuff!
I think the vocal of Master's Hammer is really aggressive for their album "Ritual".
Ritual is definitely a masterpiece.
Totally agree, one of the best and first.
and unique!!
Ow yes, i totally forgot 😬
Already nonexistant Dark Fortress, i enjoy also vocals of Watain and look up for Hail Spirit Noir ;)
Yes Mortuus/Arioch is insane.
Much prefer Legion - he was pretty distinctive.
How did you post this comment 3 WEEKS ago?!
Mortuus and Attila are in a league of their own. Both of them are top tier black metal vocalists.
@@lexbeltran1354those are my absolute faves of black metal. So distinctive in their sound.
So glad you brought up Rainer Landfermann, I heard him for the first time on Anal Nathrakh's album Passion, and I never managed to find out who did those absolutely insane vocals. It's one of my favorite songs purely because of his vocal style and how batshit insane he sounds, I absolutely adore it.
yes!! I always found that song underwhelming until I listened to bethlehem... now it's one of my favourite anaal nathrakh songs
I would say that Mirai Kawashima's vocals are also really unique. Especially since he has so many different styles of singing in his songs
Yeah, he rules!
One of my favorite black metal bands and experience with "howling" type vox is Daemon of Limbonic Art.
Not having Attila Csihar on this list is the biggest fail on the list... I like the list, but Attila is the most distinctive vocalist in BM history
Satyr has hella evil vocals, early albums are the best
shining vocals sound really calming and strong for me which makes it unique for me
lmao i wrote this before watching the whole video, i was suprised you would mention it
How Garm didn't make this list is criminal. He is unique even within his own material.
Ole Luk's vocals for Afsky sounds like he is absolutely shredding his vocal chords, definitely on of my favorites
So glad Famine from KPN made it on the list, if even briefly, he has perhaps my favorite BM vocals, so unique, with his high pitched shrieks more common in their older material and the style mentioned in this video, where every word is almost spat out horrifically. Really makes you feel like a medieval French peasant
Peste Noire - Dueil Angoisseus
Also famine's other style of vocals is quite unique, too
My favorite black metal vocalist is Durbatuluks singer Farvann
nah come on
I really enjoy Déhà's work on albums like 'Cruel Words' and 'A Fleur de Peau'.
I’m in a coffin has pretty insane vocals, very emotionally tortured sounding.
Wrist deep in depression and finally happy especially show it
For me some of the most unique vocals in Black Metal is from Messiah from Arkona (I had an opportunity to play with band on one stage) and Nantur Aldaron from Sacrilegium. I recommend to listen albums like:
Arkona - Imperium
Arkona - Zeta Reticuli: A Tale about Hatered and Total Enslavement
Arkona - Lunaris
Sacrilegium - Wicher
Nice video and nice channel, thanks.
You mention Nattramn from Silencer and would like to know more in the style? Try Nordgaren from Fleurety and comment, please.
I miss Legion a ton! Erik to me had one of the most recognizable voices in all BM. A true master of belching forth demons.
Same
Dude I'm trying so hard not to argue with the Mortuus fans in the other comments.
Just started the video and I'm already digging Urfaust. Thanks Farvann :)
Seems like you missed the Urfaust cover I uploaded a few weeks ago ;)
@@Farvann I just watched it haha, pretty fuckin awesome dude 🤘
best vocal performance of all time is on Peste Noire's La Sanie des siècles - having both Neige and Famine trading off in the song Deuil Angoisseux is probably the most insane metal vocal moments of all time.
I personally think that Moonblood's vocalist is also very recognizable. Also B.S.O.D uses some very experimental vocals in Grausamkeit (monkey sounds at the beginning of Kratze off the Pink Green demo lol)
Exactly what i was looking for. Glad you appreciate MB and bsod!
Let's not go praising nazis or fascists though.
Praising the art and the person for creating it is NOT the same as endorsing or agreeing with their beliefs. For example, I like Kreator but their lyrics get on my nerves. Doesn't matter, still listen to them and enjoy their music very much ! Why not separate the art from the artist ?
@@MardyBum100291 seperate the art from the artist
@@MardyBum100291 poseur.
Mephorash ! All around they are recognisable . From music to vocals . The music has a cold energy no other black metal band has succeeded to give me that feeling . Worth checking out🤘🏽
My all time favorite Blackmetal band is Helrunar. The voice is maybe standard blackmetal stuff, but I like their style (I prefer the old albums).
Great list. Dictius Te Necare is probably my favorite BM album for vocals, but I think my favourite BM singer is Onielar (Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult / Bethlehem) : she has a unique voice and his work on the two last Bethlehem albums is really good.
I've always thought Dagon from Inquisition had some super unique vocals that nobody else quite does, glad you and others hear it!
Nah that pedophile sucks
I think everyone knows they're unique, it just so happens they're also shit 😂 he sounds like a lobotomized squidward being forced to endure CBT
I think dagon kinda copied abbaths style imo..
@@RytkösenJussiTrue, but Dagon took it to the extreme.
Isnt he a nonce?
Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ
J.J. of Harakiri for the Sky
Sakis style and unique intonation is recognizable instantly.
And J.J. has a more typical style, however you can instantly recognize his voice whether it's Karg, Seagrave, HFTS, or any other features like in Ellende's song.
J.J. has that kind of hardcore heavy influence in his vocals.
His singing destroyed his vocal cords aswell
Their debut Min tid skall komme is a brilliant album
It's good to see that that Berserker guy from the movie Clerks got his break finally, doing vocals for Inquisition.
I'd personally include Mikko Aspa as well, and possibly Haela from Liturgy
just sub'd. thanks for bringing these to my attention. it's hard to find that inspiration black metal brought me years ago
I was sure you would mention Emperor and Ihsahn
yes, ihsahn has a unique voice with high pitch screaming, and clean singing.
Fluss from Aara is pretty spectacular. Her high pitch screams, while typical of black metal are quite unique, calm and haunting. Just saying! Their Triade albums are amazing
She's amazing.
Agreed
Drapsnatt has great howling vocals. Forgotten Woods are another one. In the Woods, "Heart of the Ages" is probably my fave BM album. Masterpiece.
one of my favorites too
Something I think is pretty interesting is how Black Metal has such a massive range in vocal styles, and how ‘unsafe’ (for lack of a better term) much of it is for the voice.
Depressive Years - Inmense Emotional Pain
is a masterpiece that i bet Farvann would like.
I like your list of BM singers. I am surprised you did not include Ihsahn of Emperor. I think he sounds very unique. His clean vocals on his solo CDs are spectacular. Skål \m/
He's my favourite by far. Very versatile and his bm vocals are top notch.
Just commented the same. Really odd to not include Emperor here.
I love Jens Ryden in Profundi and Naglfar, also Ics Vortex has some iconic vocals, maybe not growling, but still iconic in black metal.
I think my favorite is Paul Ledney from Havohej and Profanatica, and also Imperial from Krieg. Both very distinctive and recognizable.
Good call. He has a very grim & hateful style. Next Profanatica will be AWESOME
I appreciate what you do, plz keep yer thoughts flowing & camera going.
Check out Furia (PL). They're not only black metal, they have their own, unique style. A song "Niezwykła nieludzka nieprzyzwoitość" is a masterpiece.
What a list! I had 70% the same vocalists in my mind, but you def missed out on Gaamalzagoth from Moonblood.
Before watching I wanna say that Varg was pretty unique on the first albums. Nobody sounded like that before he did it
Oh I thought you wouldn't mention Famine from Peste Noire, but I'm happy to see it on honorable mentions
Didn't think you'd put Dani Filth in here, and a worthy add to the list. No matter how much 'trve' black metal i listen, 'Dusk... And Her Embrace' will always be in my top 3 best albums ever. Great stuff here, subbed!
And vempire ep was pure fire.. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@RytkösenJussi And Principle of Evil made flesh is awesome, ''Forest whispers my name'' classic.
@@lopolik but i liked more vempire. But for first album its solid, symphonic and good black metal.
Have you listened to "Los males del mundo"? I think that their vocalist does a proper rendition to Dani´s style but with his own improptus.
@@JGerFuentes I'll give it a go, thanks!
I really like him. I used to listen STS the black album daily when it came. 😈
I agree. Also his vocals on Ultar are brilliant as well
You know, I listen to a lot music and rarely research the bands.

My favourite singer definitely is Mortuus/Arioch (Marduk/Funeral Mist) followed by Naas Alcameth.

I'm a bit disappointed Gaahl didn't make it to the list. He does both amazing screams and a lot of very deep, low clean vocals as well in his current band. Personally I find his style being very recognizable.

Was suprised to not see Malefic of Xasthur here. I always thought his vocals were some of the most depraved and depressive in all of Black Metal.
That sound comes beyond grave!! 💀💀💀
Too early burzum.
A perfect example would be Spells of Destruction.
Missed Vintersorg.
Thanks for the video.
ALN from Mizmor has a really wide vocal range, from unique sounding pained screams, to deathcore-esque inhaled growling, and even Ring Wraith shrieks
That is some of the most boring shit today. Sorry.
Jens Rydén's scorching vocals on Sheol totally blow my ears.
Silenius from Summoning and Abigor, Mika from Impaled Nazarene and the Moonblood vocalist are very underrated and among my favorites. Also Ville from Moonsorrow is great even they are no true Black metal.
Silenius is very underrated! Hailz from Vienna 🇦🇹
Silenius sings like a God

2 - Behemoth;
3 - Silencer.

Hail Mystifiel!
