That "cute" encounter would have been 100 times better had you added some more Japanese.
I think mainly most Japanese person feel much more comfortable when they realize the foreigners can speak fluently their language.
Some of them try really hard to use their English but for what I have seen they do that because they underestimate the communication skills of people abroad (which is totally expected considering the huge majority who are not skilled enough, not to mention they are unaware of Japanese culture, and how they learn to "read" the environment, as once I heard)
I thought myself, eventually once I get to know people there hopefully on a trip and not only online, that simply I can try using English hard to understand for them, so they can realize I can as well speak their language to effectively talk to them.
For what I have seen, many foreigners vlogging rely on English. That makes really difficult to stablish meaningful bonds with natives.
