He is still alive and will be 76 next month, however his health is failing and my mom and I care for all his needs. He is the original singer of the mentioned songs but unfortunately as you have read he was not given much credit for his work. He also sang with the spinners, drifters and many other groups as well as a solo album. He has suffered a stroke but can still sing and he can play the keyboard with one hand better than most with two. Please keep him and our family in prayer. Your father is both lucky and unlucky. Unlucky not to have had the recognition he deserved, but lucky and blessed to have been such a gift of a voice, and to have his family around him at this difficult time. We are lucky that we can still enjoy his soulful singing.
I have played keyboards for Burt Bacharach for twenty years, and he still does these songs pretty much this same way - you can tell your father! :). I love this version of these songs. Beautiful, and powerful. Soulful. Your dad is awesome.
The song by Lou Always something there to remind me was included in the stage act of my friends who were supporting act to the Beatles on numerous occasions in the cavern club and around Liverpool clubs in 1963/64 Lous version was by far the best. It was also done by a British girl singer of the sixties Sandie Shaw but Lou did it best.
I kept hearing this version of Always Something There to Remind me in a commercial just about every day the past couple of weeks and it was stuck in my head so I searched for it and found this gem. What a fantastic voice!

As to prayer, I gave up on that fairy tale long ago and yet I wish for Lou all the very best. I have to claim ignorance. I was blown away when this song wrapped up Mad Men Season 6 Ep. 8. Had no idea this song existed before Naked Eyes did it in the 80s.

The history of this song is actually pretty crazy. Interestingly, the song had originally been recorded as a demo for Dionne Warwick in 1963. Her demo was never released. Lou Johnson made the top 49. billboard with his smash hit in 1964. Burt Bacharach and Hal David, a very successful song writing duo, originally wrote the song in 1960. Dionne Warwick rerecorded her original version in 1967 and made the top 40 hit. This is the version used in the Black mirror episode, "Black Museum". Many artists have made covers of this song, but this is considered the original version by the two writers, as they thought the demo version was more of a rough draft.
Actually Lou Johnson hit with it first in the summer of '64 and is considered the original. The Sandie Shaw version came out a couple of months later and was huge in the UK as a #1 song. She never had the success in the US she did in Europe.
So sorry for the loss of this talented under appreciated artist, and condolences to his friends and family (I know it's been since 2019 that he died, but am sure he's still very much missed, and the loss of loved ones is something one never really gets over). Dionne's was called simply Message to Michael. Lou's was Kentucky Bluebird (A Message to Martha). Yes, I agree with Mr. SoulSimon (below). Johnson also did additiional studio background vocals for Bacharach/David on many other things during the "Brill" days. An unsung hero.
I went to look up the artist of this tune after hearing commercial because I always remembered it. The first artist Google showed was an 80s group which version I've heard and I thought, no definitely not, it was a soulful voice. After several artists listed, I found Lou Johnson. For shame, Google for not listing the original artist first! I hope the family received some monies from the ad that played a good portion of this great tune...
What beautiful original renditions of both songs! My first hearing of both was by Dionne Warwick a few years after this. Until I read up pn songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David I never was aware of these renditions as they didn’t get any radio airplay at the time the records were released.

I was well aware the Naked Eyes version was a cover, as well as the Dionne Warwick & Sandie Shaw covers.
I was recently made aware of the original from the Prime commercial.
It took a bit of Googling to find this... Hoo boy is this amazing, Lou Johnson's voice is so well suited to this song.

Me too. I recently heard it on an Amazon ad and I got curious. My dad constantly played the 80's version (still great too) but I always assumed that was an original. Now after all the years, I bump into this.
I just found out about him. His recordings are magnificent.

Millions of artists did this one but my earliest memory of hearing it is this one. I was like 5 years old. I also remember hearing it in some perfume commercial in the 60s but I don't if it was this version or not.

I remember this version by Lou before the so call "remake" of There's Always Something..... I love this orginal song, because here in Birmingham Alabama, the DJ Tall Paul, played it all of the time back in the day!❤

I really like his renditions of these song. Mr. Johnson did both of the songs very well.
Dionne's was called simply Message to Michael. Lou's was Kentucky Bluebird (A Message to Martha). Yes, I agree with Mr. SoulSimon (below). Johnson also did additiional studio background vocals for Bacharach/David on many other things during the "Brill" days. An unsung hero.

I went to look up the artist of this tune after hearing commercial because I always remembered it. The first artist Google showed was an 80s group which version I've heard and I thought, no definitely not, it was a soulful voice. After several artists listed, I found Lou Johnson. For shame, Google for not listing the original artist first! I hope the family received some monies from the ad that played a good portion of this great tune...

What beautiful original renditions of both songs! My first hearing of both was by Dionne Warwick a few years after this. Until I read up pn songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David I never was aware of these renditions as they didn’t get any radio airplay at the time the records were released.
YEAH!!! This is the other version of “Always Something There To Remind Me” that I sometimes heard on the radio, besides Dionne Warwick’s. I just didn’t remember who the singer was. Thanks for sharing! 👍❤️
