The demon was trying to pick the apple and could not, it was struggling. Ren in the background showed him having a basket of apples in his hand while watching his demon struggle to pick it. I believe Ren is going to share his apples with his demon. Hence to get along with his demons instead of fighting them. Because they will always be there so might as well get along with them.

Ren made a perilous journey through a dark forest to seek him out to share an abundance of apples with him. I ugly-cried the first few times I watched this video. Ren knew, so many years ago, that his dark/lost side was a part of him rather than something that can be banished or defeated, and it needs to be accepted/cared for/guided/tended, or whatever is a better description of it.
