- In this video, I will show you how I cleaned out my home air conditioning condenser coil. My ac was not cooling down my house properly. So I went outside and I saw that my condenser was very badly plugged up with a lot of debris. So I cleaned it out and it made a huge difference.

The design makes this AC a possible alternative to ductless DYI systems. It works great. The remote control could be more visual aid oriented like a backligh design. Follow mfg instructions for care and all and this should be the only AC you need for those of is that don't live in new homes with central AC

Why do people act like it’s so insane to pay $50-$100 for an HVAC technician to clean your coil for you? You have a trained individual doing the job for you so you know it’s done correctly. HVAC technicians and all tradesmen are vital to everyday operation of of equipment we use all the time. Their time and knowledge doesn’t come cheap all of the time but it shouldn’t come cheap, tradesmen are much more valuable then they are given credit for.

Nice job, I cleaned out my 5 year old 15,000 BTU 115 volt window A/C because it was drawing 21 amps, after cleaning it is drawing 12 amps.
I told my cousin her central A/C unit needs cleaning, so now I am watching YT videos on how to clean central A/C units so I can do hers.
I have done window A/C's but never a central unit.
Wow 21 amps down to 12 that is a pretty big improvement. Well a window unit pretty much has the same components as the big one, just a whole lot smaller and compact. FYI- You don't need to let the coil dry before you put it back together and operate it. The coil sits out in the rain, snow, ice, etc. It actually runs more efficiently when it's wet... Better heat transfer from the refrigerant. I would however, suggest that you cover the electrical components with a plastic bag or something before you spray water all over them. That's why they're covered with a solid metal panel, to keep the rain off them. And by the way, for about $15-$20, you should probably just replace the rusty capacitor in the electrical compartment too. That'll save you a $150 service call in the future. Other than that, nice job. If you do that once or twice a year, you can cut down on the amount of coil cleaner you're having to use as well. Once in the spring and once in the fall. Only need 1 or maybe 2 cans then.
you suggested that he replace the cap as preventative maintenance, to save a $150 service call. if he has a cap and knows how to put it in himself, as you would have to be assuming, then why would he need to call a service person to begin with? and if your answer is, to diagnose the bad cap, then now u are assuming he doesn't have the knowledge to do so, so how would u expect him to change the cap in the first place?
No, I'm saying if he just replaces the capacitor that looks buldged or rusted (old) for $20 or so while he's cleaning it and checking it out, he won't have to pay a tech to come out and replace the cap later... Thereby saving himself the $150 or so for the service call. Of course if you're not comfortable enough around electricity or don'fell confident that you can change out the cap yourself, then don't do it. Call a tech out.
Lol, you obviously are not getting it.
Because if you don't replace an old but functioning one, it'll fail on the hottest day of the year. In the evening, supply stores closed, with no HVAC guys that'll sell you a replacement without first checking ($80 pls), then doing it themselves (and another $130). This despite the fact you know it's the cap, you pulled the cap already and it's bulging more than a 13 year old at hooters.Just give me a fucking cap! Then you're sweating in the dark, replacing it with a used used one you got off some guy your dad's buddy knows when if you'd just changed that old but still working cap you'd nicely chilled out in bed right now
I blow out the compartment (EVERY year a mice nest of chrushed fall leaves stacked even on top of the electric relay connections!), suck out the junk around the compressor, re-close the compartment, put the main fan lid back ON (with a short spritz at the fin tops first), THEN I spray the fins with the water, with just an open hose, and let the water fall on the fins. Using De-ionized water, if you have the kit, is best. I never use a brush, can damage the fins.

Jimmy Favereau don’t build it to short roof wise because the unit will fight itself for air the hot air the fan blows up will hit the roof an come right back down to the unit an back throw coils hot hot hot just re circulates

A neat thing to do is get some electric meter readings for a few weeks before you do this job. Try to get reading every day, you can compare the readings you get after you clean the unit. So power in the USA cost between $.10 and $.24 cents for a kw. If you were using 90 kw a day before you clean your AC now you may only be using 70 KW a day. So at my house I pay about $.16 a KW. Now the math 90 KW minus 70KW is 20 KW SAVED 20 KW X $.16 = $3.20 a day x 30 days = $96.00 you are saving a month. Fokes don’t worry about those lights left on, its your AC thats running up the bill.
Excellent video it was informative and entertaining but next time try Simple Green in a pump sprayer instead of the spray cans. Some cleaners are akaline which makes them better for the indoor evaporator coil and not good for the condenser.

Turn the system back on immediately, dries out in 5 minutes or less. No need to wait. Use a shop blower for the compartment side, AFTER spraying the coils with the water.
How long before you turned the plugged the power back in to unit and breaker back on? The other thing I was was thinking that you may want to pull the grass back away from it and lay some rock in there. I did that and get some dust, but never all that debri. Gardeners also, for those who have them...blow all the crap at the AC unit and house without a care. I hate that!!!

The brand name is a nordyn which makes Frigidaire. Witch are very bad at running very high head pressure because of the coils are to small. I highly recommend cleaning the condenser coil twice a year. And next time you clean the condenser coil make sure that u don't get the time delay control board and Contactor wet witch could cause a internal low voltage short. But very good job and if u use a brush be sure u brush with the fins

Nice how to video. I would just add to be careful not to use too much water pressure as it can bend the fins-at least it did on mine in a couple of spots.
Yes it is super easy to bend the fins. If you bend fins you can try using a condenser fin comb to straighten them back up again. Well thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Have a good day.
Spray with some pressure, but along the fin grooves, rather than against or at an angle, which you did just fine, you went along the grooves (the water was htting straight on ,which is best and shouldnt bend the fins.)

Yeah my fan outside still worked just fine. If your fan motor outside is not turning, then you could have a few problems (bad fan motor, bad capacitor, bad main power feed, bad contactor, bad contactor coil, bad control voltage feed, bad thermostat (check batteries in thermostat, if not hard wired) You can diagnose all of these problems with an inexpensive volt meter by checking power outside at the unit, but be careful if checking live power because you could get shocked, and getting shocked is not fun. I didn't know those posted only meant to send the second one but. you did a fine job. I'd say it's good that you used the foam cleaner but it's a bit overkill for such a small coil you'd be fine with just using the hose take your time going from top to bottom and while your spraying look at the otherside of the coil to see if you've got dirty or clean water . also in books it will tell you to go from the inside out but it's fine to just come from the outside . but definitely keep your electrical components covered . but shoot so many people don't even attempt to do it or know how important a clean coil can be so I say good job to you sir .
This is an outside unit and can completely handle water, remember it will rain one day and it not sealed off water tight. Just let it dry or blow it off with a lawn blower or something

Is your dryer venting directly onto that coil or something? Its pretty dirty for getting cleaned yearly.
Tip: When it is that dirty, and needs to be manually cleaned before chemical cleaning, you might as well take the wire grill off. It will make the job a lot quicker, and only requires a few screws.

Did the hard brush you were using bend the fins at all?
No not really. It seemed to be ok to me, but I was being pretty gentle when I was scrubbing. Also I did not think my brush was a super hard brush, it had soft bristles. Well I hope this info helps you out. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Have a good day.
Hi thank you so much for this very informative video. My AC didn't look dirty at all but I wanted to try everything before having to call anyone. It seemed to work it cooled off and was running for about 6 hrs but then sadly cut out again 😢 The can of spray that I had said you may have to do it more than once so I attempted again and fingers crossed it seems to be working for now. Is this something you've experienced?? I noticed you had 5 cans of coil cleaner and I only went through 2 maybe I just need more??
Do you have cottonwood trees in your yard? They are the worst for A/C units.

Need garden pump sprayer or coil cleaning gun an gallon of coil cleaner along with a 1/4 5/16 quick connect chucks an impact driver be done already turn back on it will self dry it’s self out while running anyhow

Ismael Mahamat Yes should work the same. However instead of a circuit breaker and a quick disconnect you disconnect the battery. Always kill power. Also there is a special long flat hose attachment with holes in it you can buy that helps fit between the radiator and condenser so you can flush the condenser from both sides. But should work just about the same. Also if you do your car condenser might as well clean out the radiator at the same time. Thanks for the comment and have a good day.
You should have taken off outer grid. You could have used same brush for straightening fins, slowly go in same direction as fins works better than fin comb sometimes. Please be careful of capacitor. Other than that great video.

Parts that were unnecessary or thoughts on the film besides good job.1. Put wife's sheet over the unit before you mow. That is where most of the crap came from.2. Labels are usually (not always) put on so they can be read, so that is how you tell if the cover goes on one way or the other.3. Most everyone has a digital camera now, so when you are taking something apart, take pictures for orientation.4. Use wife's toothbrush to clean out the electrical compartment..then clean it with the big brush.

Nope, I cant do that. If I turn the AC off, It will get real hot inside my house and disrupt my snacks,TV, and couch time. However, I will make sure to tell my wife to steer clear of that AC unit next time she is out mowing the grass. LOL. No, I am just kidding.
