Marvel is the most successful film franchise in history. Every single one of its movies have become hits - bringing in $22 billion worldwide. Competing franchises have yet to even come close to beating that number, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, and James Bond.
However, Marvel’s wasn’t always recognized as the greatest. In fact, the company was once seen as embarrassing and even shunned and casted out by many.
Things didn’t start to change until an assistant - who fetched coffees and swept floors for $8 a week - came up with the idea of creating new and unlikely superheroes. They weren’t perfect, good-looking and athletic like traditional superheroes. Instead, they were flawed and had problems and weaknesses like regular people.
When the assistant pitched one of his most imperfect superhero ideas to his boss, he was told it was the worst idea ever. Convinced his boss was wrong, the assistant went behind his back and secretly released a comic to debut his new and unlikely superhero. That superhero is now voted the most popular in the world.
This is the story of how an assistant turned Marvel from a company seen as a joke to a multi-billion-dollar empire.

One day in Los Angeles, I went to get my car washed. Sitting next to me was this old man and I instantly knew who it was, Stan Lee. What surprised me was that nobody else there knew him. I was like a giddy kid as we sat there and talked comics and he was excited about the first Spider Man movie coming out soon. When his car came around, I noticed it was an old black Mercedes with a lot of wear and tear. I later found out that Stan was going through law suits and financial hardship at that time and yet, he was humble and took the time to chat with me. I'll always cherish that memory with Stan at the carwash. R.I.P Stan Lee

Very true, Without Joe Simon & Jack Kirby's Captain America, Marvel would never have taken off like it did back in the 1940's.
I can't imagine how satisfied he must have felt when Sony's Spiderman, Fox's X-men, and ultimately Marvel Studios came to life! It must have been so satisfying and paid off after all his life creating these characters from his life experiences and societal issues, which is so relatable and emotionally resonant with people. Which is why Marvel succeeds in its films, definitely no offence to DC even though Superman is my favourite character, but is also because of Smallville, which is also relatable and emotionally resonant like Stan's characters. Mr Lee has lived a tough life but still continued creating such fun and awesome characters over the years! Continue to Rest in Peace Mr Stan Lee!

Ugh. This is the Disney Corporate narrative. Stan Lee gets way too much credit; this is an attractive myth but it's notable that Stan doesnt create anything for decades while Kirby does, then when Kirby is there, this unprecedented creativity happens! Then Kirby LEAVES and Stan STOPS WRITING AND STOPS CREATING, oddly enough... while Kirby goes on to create the Fourth World Saga and more. Hmm.

Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby created "Stan Lee's characters". Stan Lee stole from greater minds than his own and played editor. When he couldn't ride anyone else's creativity he retired. He kept saying he was going to write that great novel after his long career of "writing comics" and "inventing characters". Here's a spoiler: He didn't. Stan Lee was a thief.

19:27 the punisher was in fact released in 1989 and starred dolph lundgren. also there should be some credit to marvel editor in chief jim shooter for making marvel comics as it has come to screen what it is as much as stan lee. he later founded valiant comics with some of the best personnel from marvel and the tapestry of stories in those early years were truly amazing before they sold it.

I just had to giggle at how you mentioned Stan Lee started work at Timely around *1940* and then said he "...continued [writing comics] *up until World War II began* ..." It certainly makes it obvious that the writer is from the USA... for everyone else, WWII started in 1939

Out of all the Marvel Superheroes, Stan Lee was my favorite.
Stan lee downplayed the big work of creators like Jack Kurby, creating characters, while he didnt create any of the famous characters that made him famous on his own... and stole the rights from kirby, and others.

Comparing the money Star Wars made back in 1977 compared to today isn’t even close. If you adjusted the amount of money Star Wars has made to todays money it will be close. Plus you’re talking about 11 Star Wars movies to what 20+ marvel movies? You are comparing apples to oranges.
I love that Captain Marvel is no where because we all know those numbers were total BS.
In reality Jack Kirby had more to do with creating a lot of the Marvel heroes.Jack and Stan created most of the Marvel heroes in the 60s in the 70s Jack went to DC comics and created loads more characters that are still used today.Stan created a handful of characters that never made any money.Stan had the ability to promote himself which Jack never really bothered with.
Stan was a shy guy .. Joan "Mary Jane" Lee was the firecracker. Stan promoted everybody else Except himself .. Comics didnt even have credits ..the name of the penciler, inker, writer, editor..etc in the comics until Stan added that and it was so successful with the fans that D.C. added it too. It wasnt until WAYyyyyy later that the publicly known 'Stan The Man' side started touring and spreading the gospel of 'super heroes'.. and not his own idea. That generation of kids that grew up reading Marvel were college age now and schools started requesting Stan to come speak - Especially noticing the students interested in Writing ..this guy was THE reason they chose that field.
Shy Stan "Peter" Lee always knew Marvel and "super heroes" in general needed a P.T. Barnum .. a ringmaster to get people to stop - and take a peek in the tent .. so that thing he did in the comics, connecting with the fans - now he did it in person and caused More people that were never interested to get into comics and the 'superhero' genre, in general.. because we have ALWAYS been less than 1% of the population.
