@Legitimacy88 These fish are most comfortable when they feel they are "hidden" in the floating debris. Another trick is to place "speed bumps" near the edges of the tank. When startled they can often shoot across the tank and smack their snout against the glass. This can cause a great deal of damage and sometimes result in their death. Placing plants around the edges of the tank and in the corners can show them that it's time to slow down before they hit the glass. Best of luck!
Hey there. I've kept these fish before, as well as other similar fish from the same region. You can check out my videos for a shot of one feeding. They are very impressive fish! For anyone else who has come here because they are interested in these fish they are very timid creatures. One thing you can do to help them feel less threatened all the time is to add floating plants/woods (do your research before you add real wood to the tank).
This particular one is boulengerella cuvieri more aggressive up to 35" in wild. Most info u see is for the other subspecies so not sure what info translates to these guys

I found out that the mosaic gar (Boulengerella maculata) grows to be 8-12 inches and is not a true gar
i just bought one yesterday the guy at the store said like 17 in as a max.
i am not sure and i am trying to figure that out. cuz i cant find any info about mosic gars.
