When I was 13, I tried to edit a video timed out to this audio. I REALLY heavily edited it and it was a huge passion project for me. I worked on it for several months but my computer died and I lost all of my work. 8 years later, this audio is still extremely cozy and I'm glad it exists!
I was 11 when the original Sonic came out and I would go over to my friend's house every day to watch him play. First Sonic game I ever owned was Sonic 2. My brother & I played it so freaking much. Last Sonic game I ever played was Sonic 3 & Knuckles. After playing Generations recently, my respect for Modern Sonic has grown. Playing Adventure DX on my PS3 right now. It's been a long time (1996) since I've been into Sonic. Thank you, Generations, for bringing me back to the series :-)
36:20 Ted’s Sonic 3&K logic makes no sense, if his brother was gonna play through every classic Sonic game for $8 each he would end up paying $16 for Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles either way
SEGA with their voice actors: "what's that? They've finally gotten good direction and got their acts together? CAN EM! Get new ones! I don't care where they come from, just get rid of these old ones!"
And they're not even really using most of the new cast, because they're blatantly ignoring everybody not named Sonic, Tails, or Eggman to try and pander to the critics.
No, it's not. The Sonic Cycle implies that EVERY Sonic game that's announced is going to suck, which is not the case. Johnny said it was a roller coaster, which has its peaks and valleys.
My first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 1. Granted the game has aged a bit in recent years, but I still have fun playing it and I still have fond memories playing it at my half-brother's apartment.
I feel so weird because I am actually a little younger than Ted actually but I actually grew up with the Classic games on an actual Sega Genesis. I didn't grow up with a GameCube early on and I didn't play the Adventure games until I was a teenager.
ah.My time playing Sonic was Christmas of 2000. I had just opened up my first videogame system the Sega Dreamcast, hooked it up, and played my fist videogame ever, Sonic Adventure. THAT was a good day
It doesn't matter what the game is called, in everyway this game shows signs of of the Sonic Adventure Motif. -Multiple Playable Characters -Adventure Fields -2 Player -Finding Power Ups like the Light Speed Dash -A serious Tone to the Story - Even picks up where Shadow the Hedgehog left off, which was part of the Adventure Saga ....SONIC 06.... IS Sonic Adventure 3.... It doesn't matter about the title, it is SA3 in almost every way than that.
Sonic 2 is my favorite Sonic game, idk why but I love the music for the Death Egg Robot battle and it's come to be my favorite boss battle ever. I even wnet nuts when they had that boss and music in Generations
I can't believe I listened to the whole thing! I guess it's because I don't know anyone that is willing to talk classic video games like I would. So I guess listening to 4 guys talking about classic video games will have to fill that void in my life.
I'm really hoping for new version of this one decade once the 2022 game (Rangers I think it's called) is released. A lot in this franchise has changed, for better or for worse. I would like to hear how their opinions on these games have changed.
I don't know why, but I'm unsettled by how long Sonic's spines are in that image; I have been ever since I first saw it when this video first appeared in my Subscriptions feed.
Since it seems to be a hot topic here, I was blessed to be introduced to Sonic Adventure DX. First game I got for my Gamecube, so it snowballed into a lifelong love of Sonic. Mmmm, so good.
My history with the Sonic franchise is a very odd one to me. I never grew up with Sonic nor with Sega. I grew up with Mario on the SNES & on the N64. But I never hated Sonic nor did I hated Sega or one of their consoles. In fact, believe it or not, I didn't even knew who Sonic was until one of his games first debuted on a Nintendo console. (AKA Sonic Adventure 2: Battle) that's when I knew who Sonic was. Now that I knew who he was, I tried out some of the 3D Sonic games during the GameCube era like SA2B, Heroes & sadly Shadow the Hedgehog, but I never grew attached to those games when I first played them. When it comes to 3D platforming games, I always preferred simple, slow-paste, traditional platforming games like 3D Mario games, the Banjo Kazooie games & the Crash Bandicoot games then I did with 3D fast-paste, shooting, platforming games like Sonic. So I didn't grew any attachment to any Sonic games.....until in 2010 when I first tried out Sonic 1 on the Wii's Virtual Console, and I loved it. Sonic 1 encouraged me to play Sonic 2, 3&Knuckles & hell even Sonic 4, & I fell in love with those games. (Well, except for Sonic 4, I thought that game was just ok.) And I still love the Genesis 2D Sonic games to this day. Eventually, those games encouraged me to play the rest of the 3D Sonic games that I haven't played before like Unleashed, Secret Rings, Black Knight & Colors. However, just like the rest of the GameCube titled Sonic games, I didn't grew attached to them all that much. The 3D games didn't appeal to me all that much like the 2D games did to me. I played & beaten almost all of the 3D Sonic games, (Didn't bother finishing 06 & I haven't played Generations yet.) but most of em didn't appeal to me all that much. The only 3D Sonic games I actually enjoyed were Sonic Adventure DX & Sonic Colors. DX because I really enjoyed exploring the levels with Sonic and Knuckle's gameplay & Colors because I felt that the game had a lot of good platforming segments & not just Boost to win. The rest of the 3D Sonic games just doesn't appeal me all that much. So yeah, I'm not that big on the franchise like I am with Mario, Kirby & Zelda, but I still follow the series & I still enjoy playing the Genesis Sonic games to this day.
***** Honestly, I find Sonic 4 Ep 1. REALLY underrated. I really don't think the game deserves to get so much hate. I mean sure, the physics aren't like the classics, & sure they're a bit wonky at times, but I still find the game to be playable. I mean it's not perfect by any means, but I still had fun with the game. I haven't played Ep. 2 yet, so I really can't say anything about the game.
Jonnathan Sosa and ***** are in the same boat as me. Except that I met him in Sonic and Sega All Stars racing. I did enjoy it... and a LOT. I'm still owning it. After that, I played Sonic Rush. Finally, like last year, I've got Sonic generations for 3DS. It was funny, though.
Well, I didn't but I saw them on You Tube and I fell in love MADLY with him and 'em. Then when I saw Shadow the Hedgehog, it was cool, though, violence and other stuff fitted him perfecty (not Sonic, I mean Shadow). In the anime Sonic X, I LOVED it, thought it's based on Sonic Adventure and I don't remember the other one XP. I'm looking foward (not sure if to buy Colors or The black knight for my Wii, since I'm a Wii and 3DS owner. I got Generations for 3DS but it wasn't awesome as the XBOX or Playstation 4 or 3... IDK (XP); But it was cool, because of the gallery and the music collection.)
I have grew up with Sonic all my life. I got Sega Genesis back in 1991 with Sonic 1 as my first ever game I owned. I played the shit out of it and was four when I completed it. I remember getting Sonic 2 and falling in love with that, and again playing the shit out of it. I even remember sitting at the front door all night waiting for my mum and dad to come home with Sonic 3 when it was released. Ahh memories :)
Ryan, where i went to high school, it wasnt like yours with N64 games, but the way they were hidden was amazing, you had to spell out the word Pokemon with folders named A-Z, and within each of the letters in Pokemon, was ANOTHER 26 folders for each letter and after spelling out Pokemon would you find the emulator stash
Sonic and the Black Knight had one thing going for it, and it was the fact that Marty Friedmen who was the former guitarist from Megadeth created the most epic final boss song.
This video is proof that criticism of the Adventure series didn't got randomly invented by Gane Grumps, they has always been a spilt between the fans on the games
First Sonic game I played was Sonic 2 at a daycare when I was 3. First game to own was Heroes, then Sonic Adventure 2 battle, then Sonic Adventure DX. Enjoyed every single minute of those games and they have always been my favorite. I didn't pick up another Sonic game till Unleashed because I rented Shadow and never played it again, and I didn't own a 360 or PS3 so I didn't own 06. And Unleashed was my favorite Sonic game because I love how fast paced the daytime stages were, which was missing
@MrLzarvo Okay, I'm not bashing, but do you have to play as everyone to unlock Last Story? If you do, it sounds rather redundant and unnecessary to repeat game play mechanics when you already have the core heroes in Sonic Tails and Knuckles. You didn't specify Team Chaotix. What do they do? It just sounds too busy. Maybe leave some characters out of the main game; put them in side missions like Generations did?
If it wasn't for my older brother's love for Sonic, I would probably have been a sports freak. Sonic 1 was the first video game I ever played besides Super Mario 64. For some weird reason my older brother was afraid of Dr. Robotnik/Eggman and he used to give the controller to either my dad or me whenever he came to a hard part of the game. My mom still tells stories of how my brother was Sonic and made me laugh by running around the house. I was a baby so I loved it.
Anyone else notice how sonic is good from the beginning of the classics all the way to the end of sonic adventure 2: battle, dies for a long time, then picks back up at the 360/ps3
The thing with the barrels is, the game has already trained you that jumping on barrels makes them go down. The Barrel of Doom is a slight example of an Unexpected Gameplay Change.
Yes it does. The only version of Sonic CD that fixes the bad Collision detection is the 2011 Christian Whitehead remake. I also love how they added the Sonic 2 version of the spin dash, because I despised the Sonic CD version of the spin dash
My first Sonic game was Sonic the Hedgehog 2. My neighbor had a Genesis so I would play it at their house in the morning before we went to school sometimes.
The funniest Eggman is the Eggman from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the most intimidating Eggman is the Eggman from Sonic Sat AM. I knew that SomeCallMeJohnny's review for Shadow the Hedgehog wasn't a parody! Eat your heart out, GamingTopTen!
One of the biggest differences between SA1 and SA2's continuity, compared to Sonic 2 and Sonic 3&K's continuity is that, in the end of Sonic 2, The tornado gets damaged terribly, and tails steals an engine from Robotnik's air base, afterwards, Sonic continues on to Death Egg, defeats Robotnik and causes the death egg to fall. Sonic 3's intro shows the modified tornado, and also assumes that you collected all the emeralds in the previous game. Everything after that is told by the actual game.
My first experience with the Blue Blur was when I got my 360, I was scrolling through the games section on Xbox Live and found Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, I downloaded them both and well, you can guess what happened from there
FUN FACT: Sonic Unleashed in Japan is called Sonic World Adventure and Sonic 06 was planned to have EVERY character have there own story mode (like 06).
My first experience with Sonic was back in 2003 I think, when I was 5. My aunt gave me and my little sis her Megadrive. She gave us all the games with it: Sonic 1, 2 and 3, Alex Kidd, Moonwalker, Lemmings, some strange game called Toejam and Earl, and a few others which to this day I haven't played. I tried Alex Kidd once, but my favourites were the Sonic series. My first achievement was completing Sonic 1 (without Chaos Emeralds), but my fave was 2.
i was introduced with sonic with my friend playing Sonic heroes on the Original Xbox.... and i liked it A LOT! then i played sum of Sonic 06..... Then eventually i played most of all the classic games which makes me he fan i am today....
My first Sonic game was, well... Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Of course, the crew had to 86 Sonic Genesis, and _for good reason._ ...until 2012, when Johnny had the displeasure of recording that game.
Ah, I remember when I first discovered this channel. While I was screwing off on TH-cam,I clicked on Johnny's "19 Years and Counting" Sonic interview. Already immersed in Johnny's videos, I found Part 1 of BSC's Sonic Adventure commentary. Upon watching it, I heard Lewis, Ryan, and Ted and was like"Meh, screw this." When I finally started honestly watching their stuff... I never got a single thing done in the afternoon. Screw you guys. But really, you rock.
hey did any notice in unleashed that the werehog is suppose to be stronger then normal sonic. but it only takes one hit to kill an enemy as sonic while the werehog takes more than 10 hits
The first sonic game I can remember playing was Sonic R for the PC. My dad bought the PC port second hand for like, 3 dollars, so he installed it on our shitty Windows 98 computer and I absolutely loved it.
What S3&K did well, was the way you transitioned from level to level. So If you cut a level out, it fucks it up. Also, the two game were supposed to be one, and were split cause they ran out of time...so really both games are one. Now Knuckles in Sonic 2 is just crazy!
IF SA3 happens, they need to remove Shadow the Hedgehog's story from the main canon. They need to figure out how to pick the story from where Sonic Heroes left off.
I would like to mention now that, as of the time of this comment, BrainScratch Comms' version of the Sonic the Hedgehog Retrospective has over 1100% more views than the one that NTom and FTA had done on Hellfire Comms. It appears that you have won the popularity on this one, Ryan, Lewis, John, and Ted. Keep it up. :)
I'm probably one of the few handful of people who actually really likes the Werehog. While yes, the battle theme turns on WAY too often and levels can go on quite a bit too long, I still have enjoyment with it. Either you're fighting or you're doing platform challenges or, my personal favorite, exploring the levels for goodies! The werehog honestly more represents Sonic's more platformy side then how the day time stage represent them(which are just more focused on speed). Now, at this point in time, I've only played the ps2/wii version(the versions that DON'T require you to have a certain amount of medals in order to continue the game and splits the one big long levels in HD version into level pieces so you can stop if you want to a lot easier), but even I found it still very enjoyable! As for the day time stages, while Generations and Colors did it better, I still enjoy the stages in this game(even if it can be "boost to win" sometimes). As for the story, it really good and I really like the character interactions as well! I honestly hold Sonic Unleashed as one of my favorite Sonic games(now is it my most favorite is a question I want to answer), and has my favorite main theme, "Endless Possibilities"!
I've played Sonic 1 a lot on my sister's GameCube but I didn't get hooked until I watched Sonic X. Then I bought Sonic Unleashed. The obsession went on from there :I

I love returning to these retrospectives. It's been a decade now, I think you should do some more.
AGREED
When I was 13, I tried to edit a video timed out to this audio. I REALLY heavily edited it and it was a huge passion project for me. I worked on it for several months but my computer died and I lost all of my work. 8 years later, this audio is still extremely cozy and I'm glad it exists!
This is 10 years old what the fuck happened
Guess Johnny's fear of Sonic going backwards was proven right.
Not anymore with the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations
I was 11 when the original Sonic came out and I would go over to my friend's house every day to watch him play. First Sonic game I ever owned was Sonic 2. My brother & I played it so freaking much. Last Sonic game I ever played was Sonic 3 & Knuckles. After playing Generations recently, my respect for Modern Sonic has grown. Playing Adventure DX on my PS3 right now.
2:07:35 You called it, Johnny.
It's the Sonic Cycle...smh
No, it's not. The Sonic Cycle implies that EVERY Sonic game that's announced is going to suck, which is not the case. Johnny said it was a roller coaster, which has its peaks and valleys.
c0mf0rta61ynum6 Sonic has his ups and downs and all arounds
Sonic Cycle implies the game turned out to be bad back 2 back. We got a good game and a middling game right now
2 separate carts eh? FF7 came on three discs. Oops. guess I gotta call them Final Fanatsy disc 1, Disc 2, and Disc 3 now.
It was nice hearing you guys talk about my favorite gaming franchise and my favorite character for over 2 hours. Now its time to sleep.
My first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 1. Granted the game has aged a bit in recent years, but I still have fun playing it and I still have fond memories playing it at my half-brother's apartment.
From now on I'm listening to these whenever I clean my room that was awesome
I feel so weird because I am actually a little younger than Ted actually but I actually grew up with the Classic games on an actual Sega Genesis. I didn't grow up with a GameCube early on and I didn't play the Adventure games until I was a teenager.
Sonic R is one of my favourite games, lol
Yo wtf
Oh krud you're here
Didn't know toycat is a fan of brainscratch.
My first Sonic game? Get ready.
...
Sonic and the Secret Rings. :D (Unless a McDonald's toy with a frogger-like thing starring Knuckles counts.)
ah.My time playing Sonic was Christmas of 2000. I had just opened up my first videogame system the Sega Dreamcast, hooked it up, and played my fist videogame ever, Sonic Adventure. THAT was a good day
It doesn't matter what the game is called, in everyway this game shows signs of of the Sonic Adventure Motif.

Sonic the Hedgehog is playing... Sonic the Hedgehog?
He's playing with himself.
Drunk lewis made this 9001% better....
2020 gang I watched this like 5 years ago lmaoooo
I can't believe I listened to the whole thing! I guess it's because I don't know anyone that is willing to talk classic video games like I would. So I guess listening to 4 guys talking about classic video games will have to fill that void in my life.
I love that about Luis. True Sonic fan :D!
Mike Pollock is forever the one and only Eggman voice for me
You forgot sonic all stars racing :)
CAN YOU FEEL THE SUNSHINE LEWIS!!?!?!?
But I loved Sonic and the Black Knight. All things considered, I'm a sucker for the sword gimmick, and it was fun as hell.
The day I've been waiting for my entire life
I'm really hoping for new version of this one decade once the 2022 game (Rangers I think it's called) is released. A lot in this franchise has changed, for better or for worse. I would like to hear how their opinions on these games have changed.
Sonic 06 is Adventure styled, but it's not officially called that. We need a new Sonic Adventure game. And I mean official SA3.
Ted is just being a Contrarian for no reason. Lol.
My first moment w/ sonic was sonic adventure! x) sweet memories.
I find these videos easy to fall asleep too.
I never had too much trouble with the Sonic CD special stages
Fuck the Sonic CD special stages. They suck even more ass in the Christian Whitehead remake.
Sonic 1 is what got me into video games, I was like 4 at the time, sigh those were some great times...
I don't know why, but I'm unsettled by how long Sonic's spines are in that image; I have been ever since I first saw it when this video first appeared in my Subscriptions feed.

Maybe in the future I'll buy it on the virtual console.
Nice! :D
I was born in 96 and my first sonic game was sonic 2 on this PC collection we had. I Used to play it all the time, I sucked, but I still loved it.
I have grew up with Sonic all my life. I got Sega Genesis back in 1991 with Sonic 1 as my first ever game I owned. I played the shit out of it and was four when I completed it. Oh my god. I just looked over and saw Sonic and Knuckles Collection sitting on my shelf in my PC game collection.
1 hour and 32 minutes and its still awesome. That's because its Sonic and BSC.

2:07:35 Oh how right you were John.....oh how right you were....
This video is proof that criticism of the Adventure series didn't got randomly invented by Gane Grumps, they has always been a spilt between the fans on the games
@ProkoLokor I didn't have a problem with the controls in Shadow either, though it IS a little more slippery than previous 3D Sonic games.
No matter how many characters i like, Sonic will forever be my favorite of them all xD
1:55 I burst out laughing at that
Triple trouble is decent. It controls well and has some good stage design as well as some pretty good music for Game Gear.
hey brainscratch have u saw the newest sonic 4 episode 2 screenshots? pretty cool
Can't Believe I sat down and watch the whole thing
Well This was great
First Sonic game I played was Sonic 2 at a daycare when I was 3. First game to own was Heroes, then Sonic Adventure 2 battle, then Sonic Adventure DX. Is that Crush 40 or The Prodigy on that poster in the background?
I played all of Generation's levels front to back while listening to this...is is fate I finished when this video ended?
@MrLzarvo Okay, I'm not bashing, but do you have to play as everyone to unlock Last Story? 30:00 Banjo Tooie was always a separate game (developed afterwords), S3K was split during development.
I want that picture in my house, on every wall, modern sonic playing a classic game

Shadow The Hedgehog is actually one of the best Sonic games

Anybody else notice the Egg Cerberus in the background?
I thought you meant Unleashed really cos I remember during production it was named Adventure 3 or something along those lines
Does Gems Collection's version of CD still have the bad collision detection? I can't remember..
Only 2 hours? I'm disappoint Brainscratch. I was expecting at least 5 .
What band is pictured in the background on Sonic's wall? The Offspring?
God dammit! The comment Ted made about Sonic CD's voice acting is the first time he had me spit my drink. Greatest moment of Ted!
@241RBF
We're experts?
My first was Sonic Advance 3, which was amazing; followed by Sonic Genesis, which shat on all my expectations.
I love how you guys start this off like you're reading from the friggin' bible xD
I love this picture.
For me it started when I got a Dreamcast in early 2000 with Sonic Adventure from a local game store, back when Gamestop did not exist.
Sonic 2 was not only my first sonic game, it was also the first video game i ever played in my in tire life
lol. AWESOME CHAOTIX reference at the end
hey did any notice in unleashed that the werehog is suppose to be stronger then normal sonic. but it only takes one hit to kill an enemy as sonic while the werehog takes more than 10 hits
Keep it up. :)
Just wondering....Are these retrospectives and random rants done live?
Sonic 4- Nostalgia gone wrong!
Sonic Gens- Nostalgia gone Wild!
I've played Sonic 1 a lot on my sister's GameCube but I didn't get hooked until I watched Sonic X. Then I bought Sonic Unleashed. The obsession went on from there :I
Well, what a way to begin.
anyone besides me shocked to see that it was only 2 hours long
anyone besides me expect this retrospective to be at least 7 hours long?
2 hours!...well no sleep for me!
my first experience was the first sonic the hedgehog, then sonic 2 game gear, then sonic dx, and iv been a fan ever since
And as Sonic looks at the TV Set, he thinks to himself: "...I guess it ISN'T all about speed."
I mostly agree with this, especially regarding Colors, Generations, and Adventure 2.
