Thanks for the info, I have two of those Parasounds bridged in monoblock configuration, pushing 750 wpc and sound fantastic coupled to a primaluna preamplifier, I never listen to extreme high volumes, so these amplifiers always operate on the cool side and most important in their linear region, where they deliver clean high performance.
im looking to buy this parasound amp to power my center reference speaker under mono bridge mode. Can i ask how do you wire them behind the back of the parasound amp? thank you
I am not surprised at all. Two years ago, I bought the MA8000 integrated amp and listened to it for a week on my Magnepan speakers. At one point, I invited my good audiophile friend for a listening session. After an hour or so of clean but sterile music, I put back my old MC240 tube amp. After less than a minute, my friend said: "Now you've got a sound". And I clearly agreed with him. With the MA8000 we had clean and powerful sounds but no emotion, no feel at all, sterile music. I had to return the big mac to the store and keep my little tube amp. The MA8000 is a beautiful piece of gear, very powerful and fully equipped but in my opinion there are way better options to get better sounds and for a lot cheaper. McIntoshes of today are more for the looks than the actual sound. That is my humble opinion.
So to summarize looks like a lot of the product cost is in the exterior finish and the moving meters versus the internal guts. Since I will be listening to music 100% of the time and occasionally looking at the equipment I will take performance over form any day of the week.
I own the 2250 and the parasound 200 pre dac and pre amp. About $1800.00 for both. I am blown away! I'm not an "audiophile" but I really don't know how my music could sound any better. I have the svs prime towers. with decent cables the whole thing cost just over 3 grand. Crystal clear sound for a normal size living room. I still haven't turned the volume up much pass 60 and I love loud music! Most of my listening comes out of my pc which plugs directly into the pre amp via a usb cable. Unbelievable. Check it out!
Quite brave, I hope one day Mt. Rushmore puts this man bald head on display next to our forefathers, because he said that Parasound sounds better than McIntosh. I own several different brands, a lot of boutique brands or high-end brands are not top performs from a sonic POV, big deal. Citizen Watch makes great watches with similar internal components as Rolex (far from the best watch in the world, but like McIntosh it has a reputation that precedes itself). McIntosh been around a long time and I have heard many. I will take a Parasound for performance and price. You can keep the pretty colors, they do nothing for sound. Good Video!
First of all thank you for your video comparison. I have owned it McIntosh 2500 500w amplifier for years. I have compared it to my 3500 parasound amplifiers and hands down parasound kills it! I only 2200 parasound before I upgrade it to the big boys at 350 watts per Channel. The 2200 easily beat the Macintosh. Most of the parasound amplifiers just simply have more Dynamics. Inner detail separation Bass everything that you're looking for any good amplifier. Also on luxman amplifiers and I also have your new classic 2250. And I agree with you the McIntosh is simply a beautiful piece of artwork but doesn't sound as good. I initially started my system with C5 Snell speakers and now I'm my main system has B minor Snell speakers.
I love my 2250 v1 amp! I primarily listen to my SF Venere 3.0’s with it but now have recently added a pair of LS50 Meta’s and they absolutely shine when listening to them as well! My Meta’s are currently playing through a Peachtree Nova 125 w/220 wpc 4 ohms vs the Parasound’s 400 wpc power and I can tell you without a doubt, I will never get rid of the 2250. I bought it for $325 2 1/2 years ago and it has played every set of speakers I have bought or traded for with to their best! I have never had Macintosh gear and frankly I am happy with the two amps I have now, but may be pulling the trigger on a Peachtree Nova 500 integrated amp with an astounding 800 wpc with gorgeous wood case! 🙏 enjoy your music everybody!!
I own the little Bros the 2125v2 and it drives my pair of Focal Aria 926 like a charm..clear and powerful..bass is tight and fast. No roll off. But it need a good preamp section. And also a good source. It just reproduce and project the sound of the source with glance. I love it specially for what it cost. Actually my parasound power amp is tcheaper than my DAC and my preamp Moon 250i
Thanks for the review. I was torn on spending a little more for a Mac opposed to a Parasound, both used. MC162 or a A23. I chose the A23. Haven’t recieved it yet, but looking forward. Powering Cornwall III

@@tz7813 hi bro! My comment was about the first version of the 2125! I had the chance to upgrade to the v1 of the 2250 and right now It’s paired with the Wharfedale Dentons! Being these speakers rated at 4 ohms this Parasound NewClassic 2250 v1 almost doubled It’s power output! The diference between the 2125 v1 and the 2250 v1 is in another level! I was about to buy the 2250 v2, but when I’ve compared the specs (power and THD), I’ve realized that spending more money for the new versión was irrelevant, so I grab on ebay an almost mint and far cheaper v1 of the 2250 and I’m very pleased with the performance of this amp! Hope you read my comment and please pardom my bad english! Cheers from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Hi friend, I'm now migrating from Receiver to Pre amp + Power amp. I live in Brazil and a Mcintosh is extremely expensive here, but I have 4 options at the moment. 1* Parasound 5250 v2 Classic for $800 // 2* Krell KAV 500 for $950 // 3* Marantz 8003 for $1600 // 4* Emotiva XPA 5 Gen 3 or Emotiva MS-1 for $2000. Which would you choose? I have a 5.1 Jamo D-590 tower speaker system + Jamo E8 center and surrounds. I like Stereo but I prefer SACD multichannel and movies.
Hello. Do u think the a21+ goes well with the B&W 702 s2 ? Im about to spend about 10k on just amps, and i rly cant decide between the a21+ and some rotel's
@@hifisymphony I just bought one off ebay for $700 shipped based off your review. I am looking for a step up from a citation 7.1. Thank you man for the quick response. ...I do have one more question... what pre are you using? I am using a Cambridge cxr200 and thinking of trying a freya +. The speakers I have settled on are polk lsim705. I also have elac uni5.2 I like alot and looking at the elac carina as well. I am curious about emotiva t1+ . Tried the zeros and liked them but mids were too recessed.
I have the Parasound HCA 1500A amp paired with Magnepan LRS and love it. I have never heard a McIntosh and never will own one as they are way too expensive but she is a beauty. Thanks for the video!
Ariel, Like you, I also own the HCA 1500A that is absolutely outstanding in every way! I worry about it's lifespan and what Parasound product will be able to replace this wonderful John Curl designed Amp. I've had it serviced once, but I'm concerned about what current "affordable" Parasound replacement will be on the list! I am a Parasound fan boy based on my experience with their products. I really am not interested in any Class D amp based on my love for the wonderfully warm HCA 1500A and hope WE can keep them operational for our listening lifetime!
@@dehnpeterson5650 I love Parasound too. I have their zpre 3 preamp running with my HCA1500A. I've looked at Hegel H190 line but man they are expensive and not really sure if it will sound better.
It’s just McIntosh has a lot more resale value over the other ones. You can sale your Macintosh for almost the price that you pay for it. But as far as longevity McIntosh last for ever. I have a Rotel amp . The RMB1585 and 3 1/2 years later two of the channels went down. Now I don’t want to know anything about Rotel. And I paid 3,500 dollars for it. Because of this pandemic i took it back to Best Buy and they gave me full credit for it because they can’t send it out. So right now I’m looking for a amplifier either a 5 or a 7 channel. I’m running klipsch RF7ii .
How do they compare on reproducing **bass** though? I like thick, muscular, solid sound. Sound with serious weight and authority. Warm over bright. Sibilance will drive me up the wall. Which between the 2 for me?
I always crack up at the McIntosh "legend". They were the classic when I first started, long ago. They can make some great stuff. They have made some real dogs. They brag that they don't listen as part of their design process. I've been trained by them. I've been a dealer for both. Just listen.
transformers at the output in a solid state power amp ... i guess they are the only ones doing this Why ? house rules ? The look is just fantastic ... very classy Wonderful
Exactly! Mcintosh is a posh brand, but engineer-wise, Parasound (especially the Halo line) is an excellent piece in the audio system, talking from experience .
the 2125 v2 is pretty good, but I've been looking at the Iverson Eagle 2 as of late, it sounds really good. I've been using Parasound for a long time, it's a steal. With a PSE pre-amp, it's heaven.
Saludos Martín desde Vega Alta Puerto Rico, ¿usted cree que el Crown al cual usted le hizo review es mejor que el Parasound?, estoy por comprar Parasound, gracias.
Mcintosh had its day. I have heard their amps and they cannot compare with high end from Europe today. Nowhere close. Past glories are just that and things have moved on, as they should. I'd urge anyone to investigate highend amps from Europe. Everyone knows Gryphon as it's an old highly regarded brand that is discussed plenty, but that's only one magnificent sounding brand from Europe. USA amps had their day, in my opinion. If the Parasound at 1400 sounds better than a 5k amp, something's not right. I always thought the McIntosh amps I heard were not performing at their price points. But a 1400 unit sounding better than a 5000 unit. Surely that can't be right?
I also have multiple McIntoshes and a Parasound amp like yours. If you bridge the Parasound it sounds horrible so thats out. Used in stereo mode its not horrible but its not great either. I got the amp in with a lot of equipment and had heard somethings about it so i brought it home and ran it. I thought something was wrong with it so as a technician i opened it up to have a look. Nice transformer but very bad layout one huge board for the whole thing. Part quality is average for its price range and nothing like McIntoshes excellent build and parts quality. Not sure about this guys ears but the concensus here is that the Parasound amp is inferior to the most of amps they have heard, now i didn't think it was that bad but that is what the crew all said.
You guys are forgetting that he said that was his opinion that the Mac is more expensive but the Parasound sounds better to him. Different amps sounds better with certain speakers. Plus a lot of other things could have factored into that decision and may not always be the case in all situations. Speaking from experience and as a previous owner of their halo series I’m not doubting they are not very good amps. I actually sold my Parasound amps and bought a full McIntosh system and I’ve never regretted that decision.
True. Is a matter of preference. Currently I own a Parasound A21+, and just sold a pair of MC275 tube amps. McIntosh is a great sound.. For those who like that Mc signature unique sound. I prefer another flavor.. But not taking away credit from a legendary brand like McIntosh
I had the MC152 and I have the Parasound 2250 (first version) and this review is correct. The Parasound which retails like for $1200 is a much better amp. There is nothing the Mcintosh does better.
Martin, I was never a big fan of Mac amplifiers. They often sound too warm and flat, but they look pretty. Parasound make s a great sounding amplifier, clear and natural, with extended and dynamic bass.
I was surprised u said Parasound the way McIntosh gets praised, though I've heard great things abt both. McIntosh is more than my wallet can handle anyway, meanwhile I've been thinking Parasound might be an affordable upgrade from my Rotel.🤔
yeah! What about preamp matching? Lets see what that parasound is worth 5 years from now. You should also qualify your statement as opinion . I have heard them side by side as well and I feel the Mc152 danced all over the parasound.
I'd say that's all fair remark........ Parasound performs in a way that few other equal... Particularly at the price..... The only thing I don't especially agree with is about the looks of McIntosh components.... But again its only personal opinion....
I also own a McIntosh MC 152 and a Parasound Halo A23. The McIntosh MC 152 is really pretty to look at but sound wise the Parasound Halo A23 performs better. Please check my video clips on my TH-cam channel and you will hear the difference.
That McIntosh is a poor example of the McIntosh sound even though it costs $5000 retail- you find these discounted and for sale for well below that price. Definitely a poor value. It sounds strained at higher volume with decent full range speakers in medium large rooms. A very bad example of a Mac amp. Up range is where the Macs start shining- The MC 302 is an excellent sounding amplifier that competes with the best of the best.
❤❤❤❤ yo también prefiero Parasound e hice pruebas y se oye mejor que classe , bryston y marck levinson Parasound es increíble y otra marca que me sorprendió es outlaw
Perhaps its just me. I've owned Parasound amps and compared them years ago to the Adcom 5802 (Nelson Pass MosFet design). Without a doubt, at that time, the Adcom killed the Parasound. Sonically it had a deeper sound stage with more detail, yet less brightness. It had just 3 stages of amplification and I recall the Parasound at that time had 5 stages and leveraged bipolar outputs where the Adcom used T03 HexFets. My listening tests was performed with B&W 803 Matrix 2 speakers and Martin Logan Ascent i speakers. I've also owned an array of McIntosh preamps and amplifiers. I would argue that McIntosh amps (the ones with autoformers) generally produce a sweet, easy to listen to sound that is consistent on all speakers they are connected to. Perhaps their design is focused on longevity, and delivering consistent, smooth, somewhat forgiving sound, vs. producing a relatively detailed and perhaps bright rendering of audio reproduction that varies depending on the load the amp sees. Over the years I've built and repaired an array of solid state and tube gear. It's amazing how many people believe all amps sound the same. I do not. I've also seen different amplifier react very differently when tested with a complex reactive load vs an 8 ohm resistor. At this point, my experience tells me that perhaps many of the differences we hear are the result of speaker loading and the combination of a given power amp to the speakers we use with them. I do like Parasound. The Adcom comparison is based on older designs and the current Parasound may have a very different sonic signature and reaction to the speaker load it sees. Finally, I've never felt that McIntosh focused on rendering detail in their reproduction, but rather focused on a luxurious, "full" sound, (perhaps related to the use of autoformers which isolate the output transistors from the speaker load interaction) that is always consistent regardless of the speakers it is connected to. Thanks for your post.
@Tom. My experience is the same. I’m more old school. I do know somebody who went Parasound back in the late 90’s. Good sound but some say a bit more on the bright side. Adcom was popular back then and I have the 5500. I never did any type of side by side comparison. I’m happy with the amp. I also have a pair of Acurus amps. They are all around the same line of Parasound, Rotel, Bryston, and Adcom. I think the McIntosh tube amplifiers are better but you are spending for the visual features. I’m happy with my Acurus amps too and preamp. Everything has lasted through the years. Over 20 years now. I have Paradigm Studio speakers and an M&K sub. Even the Paradigm speakers are in great condition. It has rubber surround do they have lasted through the years. Only the M&K sub needed the foam surround fixed. I replaced around a month ago. Happy listening again. 😎👍
@@f430ferrari5 I heard a reviewer say the opposite that they were warm. 😆 Depends on who's listening I guess. I think some people confuse warm with Rich. Rich sound is always a good thing to me.
@@overnightdelivery is it possible it’s some of Parasound’s newer equipment? Those may sound a bit more warm. The person who had the system had it paired to B&W’s that were also a bit on the bright side. I think some folks recommended certain products and he just went with it only to realize that it wasn’t necessarily the best pairing. He also had hardwood floors. My house has carpet. Kind of old school so some brightness is absorbed I believe. I have a pretty big subwoofer and I do like bass. I play my Paradigm’s with the grills always on. I don’t have tone controls. There are various ways for us to tweak the system to our preference.
Parasound is not a cheap product. Parasound is less expensive than Mac and that’s a big difference when describing this product. Most of these videos on hi-end audio are hung up on dollars and not quality. After watching this comparison the only thing I know for certain is the difference in price. I was hoping for more information.
I believe Parasound Better..., I owned HCA2200 II, Now replaced by A21 makes me feel Smart and happy ... Hi-End MC is about trust, including Design, but Parasound always talking about satisfaction
How did the hca2200ii compare to a21. Because I just got the hca2200ii locally for 400 dollars and it's in excellent condition. A reply will much appreciated. Thank you
Why on earth anyone bothers with MAC equipment today is beyond me it is now nothing but a name and it's owned by a Private Investment Group in Dallas, yea, it's just a corner of someone's desk or a TB or two on the Office Server. Even the old stuff sounds ragged because of the Autoformers and the fact the output stages are class B. The tube gear is pretty good, but for what the tube stuff sells for used there is better tube gear being made today. I've owned lots of solid state and tube gear over the years and have built Krell's from scratch. I have worked as an audio repair tech as well. My ears tell me Pass Labs, Krell, and Parasound. For tube gear sound way better than MAC stuff, for tube, the BAT VK-75 is almost impossible to beat, and Atmosphere OTL's are excellent as long as your speakers don't dip down below 8 ohms. Nuff said.
You are not comparing amps with in the same power class, the more wattage an amp has, generally the better it will sound if all else is on par. I have a Mac Mc452 and I haven’t heard anything better. It is just like having a live performance in your living room. Plus separates perform better than integrated amps.
"Separates perform better than integrated" ..... Probably 12 years ago. That is something they say to consumers to sell them more gear. In 2020 an good Integrated or AVR are capable of delivering fenomenal music sound whether in stereo or HT Souround. Personally, I use an AV with preouts to an amp, currently a Parasound A21+ that I can go toe to toe with the MC452 any day.
Also... Wattage does not mean better sound. Your MC452 delivers 450W right..? See the blu meters and possibly they don't even pass the 20W line at your listing comfort.
@@hifisymphony Hey Martin - I agree with most things you say here. But this particular point of more wattage not producing better sound is a bit more nuanced imo. At moderate listening levels, you're totally right. Most amps won't need to put out more than 20 watts. But with really dynamic pieces of music, and reference level listening volumes, more wattage can produce far better sound during those peak DB levels. Just one quick example to highlight this... A friend of mine has a set of Maggies that are 84db efficient. Normally, he runs a 40 watt Premaluna amp to them, and at lower listening levels, it sounds AMAZING. But when he wants to rock out, the Premaluna just can't output enough power and he swaps over to his solid state, 1000 watt monoblocks. The difference at higher DB levels is HUGE and the sound quality is drastically improved.
@@joshpeters7392 Agreed. Almost nobody listens constantly above 100watts even in a big room with low sensitivity speakers. It's the sudden bursts of volume in movie scenes or some songs,, where that extra power makes all the difference. It should also be common sense that an amp that is hardly trying is going to last longer than one that is nearly pushed to Its limits.
The Parasound has a Total Harmonic Distortion at 0.2%. The Total Harmonic Distortion on the Macintosh M152 is 0.005% at 20-20,000 Hz. This is a huge difference. Spec wise, the lower distortion of the Mac will provide a more accurate and smoother sound. You may prefer the Parasound sound, but its a $1,000 amp that does not have the best specs or parts inside.
I respect your Personal preference. I know the Mac has much better parts but there are those who don't want that warmer rounded sound of the Mac and want a more open top end then other amps even cheaper ones can provide.
Exactly right. I was hoping the review would include the internal differences particularly regarding cost/quality. It is easy to pick apart the legend as most simply don’t want to spend $$ and this review accomadates those folks. I’ll continue to look for a good comparison. Thanks for your comments.
Rolexes don't always run correctly either but go to sell one after 30 years and see what brings more money the Rolex are the Timex. Same with Macintosh if you want this to be a heirloom peace definitely buy it it will be damn near what you paid for it 20 years down the road parasound not so much. Someone stated Macintosh makes dogs I've been in the audio game for 30 years I've never heard a dog.
Definitely two different animals. I think it’s more of what flavor you like as opposed to what’s best - unless you’re looking at your wallet at the time.
I bought my parasound halo 21 after y listen in the store, Before i compared in a time whit, dennon, nad, onkio, marantz, rotel. Yamaha. And my referente Amplifier is gryphone classA. No doubt parasound is better for Money
Yes, I hearing and noticing parasound will be soon a leader in amplifier. No doubt expensive. I saving to get two or three channels amp to go with Arcam. Tks
No comparison, the Mac wins hands down. The Parasound will hold no value and never be in the same class as a Mac. The synergy between the Padrasound in “your system” is probably better than it is with the Mac. Good video.
I owned both, and more money or pretty lights did not mean better performance. McIntosh of course will hold its value more. It's built here in USA from employees earning $28.00 an hour. Those expenses are passed to you to be included in the $5K amp. Parasound.... Has the same strategies of Apple... Design in USA and build somewhere else...... Less price.... Same or better performance.
The Mac 152 is a decent sounding amp but not even close to the MC312. Parasound sounds way to bright to me.I have tinnitus and even at low volumes Parasound amps will drive me out of the room. Like Bryson and so many other solid state amps they are too bright and harsh. I have the MC312 and the $20,000 Conrad Johnson Art 150. They are so close in sound it’s difficult to tell them apart. They are fantastic sounding amps. Everybody has their own preferences in what kind of sound they prefer. I like very musical, non fatiguing amplification. Parasound and many other solid state amps are not for me!
Totally. I never heard any negative review except this lol. It also depends on what preamp are you using? What cable are you using ? I have C52 and MC462. Its all about implementation.
The Parasound is available for $999 pretty much everywhere. Interesting as I have heard Parasound amps and McIntosh amps. The Parasound amps are like nails on a chalk board compared to the McIntosh’s I’ve heard. Specs wise the Parasound shouldn’t be on par with a McIntosh. But, everyone has their own sound preferences.
@@stevetren9248 true, some people like BMW other's Mercedes, some Ferrari and some Lamborghini, some Blondes and some brunettes. I'm just comparing and reviewing this specific two amps. I'm not saying Parasound is better than McIntosh. There are other McIntosh amps that might sound better than other Parasounds. But this two, the Parasound is 300W and the Mc152 is 150W. The Parasound has more punch and overall sound.
It's been said by many inlcuding Martin that Parasound amps like the A21/31/51 and JC5 are slightly warm, but have a balanced sound signature. McIntosh are known to be more warm, but definitely musical. It does come down to taste, but I've never heard anyone say chalk on a board...lol. Parasound IMO are a better value if your on the fence,
Brian Garside Parasound is definitely a better value. Mcintosh buyers aren’t looking for a great value or bargain. They are paying for legendary performance, name, the retro looks and blue meters that everyone recognizes. Same reason people buy $100,000 cars to get to work when a $20,000 will do the same job.
Fyi, George Lucas uses Parasound amps powering up Bowers and Wilkins 802 loudspeakers at his Skywalker Studios!!! I used to have Aragon, Denon, NAD, Luxman, Adcom, etc. power amps that I've been happy with until I brought home a Parasound Halo A51 and a C1 controller on a satisfaction guaranteed arrangement with the dealer that made my Bowers and Wilkins 804 pair of speakers sing to heights I've never heard before!!! I have friends who have McIntosh amps as well but while they do sound sweet and musical, they don't compare to the Parasound's punch and details in all spectrums: Lows, Mids, Highs! Btw, the value of my Parasound A51 holds up well since I bought it in 2006. True, McIntoshes does hold up well in values but so does Parasound Halos!!!
Couldn't agree more with the Parasound sound. Great bang for the buck and very well made.

I always crack up at the McIntosh "legend". They were the classic when I first started, long ago. They can make some great stuff. They have made some real dogs. They brag that they don't listen as part of their design process. I've been trained by them. I've been a dealer for both. Just listen.

Exactly! Mcintosh is a posh brand, but engineer-wise, Parasound (especially the Halo line) is an excellent piece in the audio system, talking from experience .
Setup an Eversolo DMP-A8 as the front end of a Parasound 2250 and you'd have a great system.
the 2125 v2 is pretty good, but I've been looking at the Iverson Eagle 2 as of late, it sounds really good. I've been using Parasound for a long time, it's a steal. With a PSE pre-amp, it's heaven.

No solid state.

Meanwhile, not much of a comparison. Why is the McIntosh plugged in but not the better sounding Amp?
Parasound is a brand for the audio cognoscenti. McIntosh is an aspirational brand people who place prestige over value and sound.
Hey cousin, haha
What components did you use, preamp, dac, phono?
True.
I was surprised u said Parasound the way McIntosh gets praised, though I've heard great things abt both. McIntosh is more than my wallet can handle anyway, meanwhile I've been thinking Parasound might be an affordable upgrade from my Rotel.🤔
Parasound is huge bang for the buck.
yeah! What about preamp matching? Lets see what that parasound is worth 5 years from now. You should also qualify your statement as opinion . I have heard them side by side as well and I feel the Mc152 danced all over the parasound.
The hell of a lot more
I believe he’s going about the price for performance which is understandable
I'd say that's all fair remark........ Parasound performs in a way that few other equal... Particularly at the price..... The only thing I don't especially agree with is about the looks of McIntosh components.... But again its only personal opinion....
The new HALO's look really good I would be proud to show it off.
Agreed, I never thought McIntosh made good looking gear. Parasound's Halo line looks beautiful, among the most attractive I've seen.
I also own a McIntosh MC 152 and a Parasound Halo A23. The McIntosh MC 152 is really pretty to look at but sound wise the Parasound Halo A23 performs better. Please check my video clips on my TH-cam channel and you will hear the difference.
What about those speakers. Do a review
Waaw love your honest review even though mac is more luxury. Waaw
Were you listening to any of the John Curl designs? What you describe sounds like maybe not to me.

I agree with your choice, but I disagree with your statement that "watts don't matter".
Nuff said.
I Love your show good stuff but how come you don’t compare the halo series amplifiers thanks keep doing what you’re doing great stuff
Mike, I have the A21+ now... Check my review on it on my channel
Still... Sounded better than the McIntosh, that I sold
